A 2-year study was implemented to characterize the contamination of estuarine continuums in the Bay of Vilaine area (NW Atlantic Coast, Southern Brittany, France) by 30 pesticide and biocide active substances and metabolites. Among these, 11 triazines (ametryn, atrazine, desethylatrazine, desethylterbuthylazine, desisopropyl atrazine, Irgarol 1051, prometryn, propazine, simazine, terbuthylazine, and terbutryn), 10 phenylureas (chlortoluron, diuron, 1-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-3-methylurea, fenuron, isoproturon, 1-(4-isopropylphenyl)-3-methylurea, 1-(4-isopropylphenyl)-urea, linuron, metoxuron, and monuron), and 4 chloroacetanilides (acetochlor, alachlor, metolachlor, and metazachlor) were detected at least once. The objectives were to assess the corresponding... |

In this work, the effects of matrix interferences on the analytical performance of a new multiresidue method based on off-line solid phase extraction followed by reversed-phase liquid chromatographic separation and electrospray triple quadrupole mass spectrometric detection were investigated. This technique allows the simultaneous determination of 30 triazines, phenylureas and chloroacetanilides, extracted from freshwaters, in 40 minutes. Quantifications were performed with the use of appropriate internal standards (i.e. atrazine D5, diuron D6 and metolachlor D6). The limits of quantification were from 1 to 32 ng L-1 for the triazines, from 5 to 59 ng L-1 for the phenylureas and from 13 to 54 ng L-1 for the chloroacetanilides. The matrix effects were... |

A wild strain of Chaetoceros calcitrans and wild and diuron-resistant strains of Tetraselmis suecica, were exposed to the PSII inhibitor herbicides diuron and irgarol, individually and in mixtures. The effects of three concentrations of diuron and irgarol and four binary mixtures were evaluated on doubling time, relative reactive oxygen species and lipid content by flow cytometry, and on photosynthetic efficiency by pulse amplitude modulated fluorescence. In both wild strains, significant effects were observed for each molecule at the highest concentration tested: at irgarol 0.5 μg L−1, C. calcitrans was shown to be more sensitive than T. suecica (+52% and +19% in doubling time, respectively), whereas at diuron 5 μg L−1, T. suecica was more affected... |

Our study aims at making progress the estimate of herbicide and nutrient inputs to the Marennes-Oleron bay which could influence summer oysters mortalities, and to bring, a better understanding of the impact on coastal ecosystems by modelling the dynamics of these compounds in the shellfish-farming area. The development of a strategy adapted to the river Charente and its estuary reveals that agricultural activity on the watershed area is omnipresent, as well on the level of the nitrogen as on the one of herbicides contributions. It is thus necessary to specify Charente fluxes, which is the main tributary of the Marennes-Oleron bay, in order to better characterize its impact on shell fish-farming activity. Hydrodynamic modelling will constitute an... |

In the Atlantic French coast, significant mortalities were observed in oyster communities during gametogenesis. These deaths possibly result from the cumulative effects of various stressors such as seasonal temperature variations, pesticide application and the release of contaminants from the resuspension of sediments. A field survey, based on aquaculture conditions at 15 and 70 cm from the sediment bed with genetically-resistant (R) and -sensitive (S) lines, showed a stress condition. Significant weight loss was observed during May 14th through June 10th for both R and S lines. On one hand, the levels of the egg yolk vitellin in females were decreased at May 14th for both R and S lines. On the other hand, a significant increase in vitellin production was... |

Microalgae, which are the foundation of aquatic food webs, may be the indirect target of herbicides used for agricultural and urban applications. Microalgae also interact with other compounds from their environment, such as natural dissolved organic matter (DOM), which can itself interact with herbicides. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of natural DOM on the toxicity of three herbicides (diuron, irgarol and S-metolachlor), singly and in ternary mixtures, to two marine microalgae, Chaetoceros calcitrans and Tetraselmis suecica, in monospecific, non-axenic cultures. Effects on growth, photosynthetic efficiency (Ф’M) and relative lipid content were evaluated. The chemical environment (herbicide and nutrient concentrations, dissolved organic carbon... |

The effects of seven herbicides, four insecticides and one molluscicide were tested at concentrations of up to 10 mg/l on larvae of oysters, Crassostrea gigas (9 days exposure), and on laboratory cultures of the algae Isochrysis galbana and Chaeloceros calcilrans (21 days exposure). Ali of the pesticides tested had significant toxic effects on at least one of the test organisms. The strongest effects were those of lindane and isoproturon on survival and growth of C.gigas larvae, and of isoproturon and carbetamide on growth of Isochrysis and Chaeloceros cultures. The log-probit model for the relationship between dosage and effect, and Haber's rule for the relationship between duration of exposure and effect, hardly ever applied to our data. In sorne cases... |

Microcosms, each consisting of 2 L natural surface seawater maintained in 2.3-L glass bottles, were immersed at a depth of 6 metres. The renewal of ten percent of microcosm volumes was carried out every other day. Phytoplankton-containing seawater was used for renewal (previously filtered through 25-, 50- or 200-μm cut-off). Phytoplankton community pigment analysis (by HPLC) and flow cytometry analysis were performed. After 13 days, data exhibited phytoplankton characteristics in microcosms in the same range as that of the natural surrounding sea water over the same period. Furthermore, in these microcosms, a negative correlation was observed between the filtration cut-off used for renewal water, and the eukaryote cell count. Herbicides were tested as... |

Field studies were established in Zavalla and Oliveros, Argentina, during four years in order to optimize Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.) chemical control by means of the thermal calendar model in comparison with other criteria (weed height or days after sowing). The effect of three application dates of postemergence herbicides was determined by visual control, density of tillers originated from rhizome bud regrowth, and from crown and shoot bud regrowth, and soybean yield. Following the thermal calendar model criterion, applications during the second date afforded the best control. Weed height for the first date showed little variability between experiments but was highly variable in the second and third application dates, achieving in some... |
