Confronting a morphological nightmare: revision of the Neotropical genus Guatteria (Annonaceae) Naturalis
Maas, P.J.M.; Westra, L.Y.T.; Guerrero, S. Arias; Lobão, A.Q.; Scharf, U.; Zamora, N.A.; Erkens, R.H.J..
A taxonomic revision of the genus Guatteria, including the former genera Guatteriella, Guatteriopsis and Heteropetalum is given. Within the genus Guatteria 177 species are recognized, 25 of which are new. Included are chapters on the history of the taxonomy of the genus, morphology, wood anatomy, karyology, palynology, chemistry, flower biology and pollination, dispersal, distribution and ecology, phylogeny and molecular studies, conservation, and uses. A synoptical key to all species is included, as well as two dichotomous keys, one for the species of Central America and Mexico, and one for the species of NE, E and SE Brazil. The species treatments include descriptions, full synonymy, geographical and ecological notes, vernacular names and taxonomic...

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 54. Comments on the names proposed by Hodgson (1845) and their priority Naturalis
Dickinson, E.C.; Walters, M..
Hodgson (1845) described 49 ‘new’ taxa. It appears that when he prepared this paper for publication Hodgson was unaware of parallel publications by Blyth. Conflicts of priority are thus a concern and although Blyth’s relevant papers have generally been conceded to have priority the ‘fit’ of the dates has not previously been clearly explained. We apply the dates for Blyth’s papers provided by Dickinson & Pittie (2006) and confirm that these fit with previous understanding, implying that no fresh issues of priority arise. 26 of the 49 ‘new’ taxa prove not to have been new, having been named before. Of 18 Hodgson names 16 are in current use. Another has been replaced by a nomen novum due to preoccupation, and one more has been declared a nomen oblitum....

Überlegungen zu einem “Haus der österreichischen (Zeit)Geschichte” Naturalis
Karner, S..
The installation of a „Haus der Geschichte Österreichs im 20. Jahrhundert“ is incorporated in the programme of the Austrian Government, based on a preliminary study by the author. It should be realised in 2006 and will include the history of the Austrian Republic from 1918 to the present, emphasising the history of the First and Second Republic, and the Third Reich. Original sources will be collected and made available to schools, officials, the media and private persons. The development of Austria is seen as part of the development of Europe and, as such, also as part of the history of the World. Emphasis is placed on subjects to which Austria had an obligation, such as documents on the persecution and killing of Jews, Roma and Sinti, as well as the exile...

The distribution of silver specimens from the Kongsberg Silver Mines, Norway, 17th and 18th centuries Naturalis
Berg, B.I.; Nordrum, F.S..
Specimens of native silver from the Kongsberg mines in Norway are world famous and have been distributed through sales and gifts during the whole period of mining from 1623 to 1958. Names of customers, the number of sold specimens and their silver content are documented in accounts which are preserved back to the 1620s. The Danish-Norwegian kings received the largest amounts of silver specimens.

Revised classification and catalogue of global Nepticulidae and Opostegidae (Lepidoptera, Nepticuloidea) Naturalis
Nieukerken, E.J. van; Doorenweerd, C.; Hoare, R.J.B.; Davis, D.R..
A catalogue of all named Nepticulidae and Opostegidae is presented, including fossil species. The catalogue is simultaneously published online in the scratchpad http://nepticuloidea.info/ and in Catalogue of Life (http://www.catalogueoflife.org/col/details/database/id/172). We provide a historical overview of taxonomic research on Nepticuloidea and a brief ‘state of the art’. A DNA barcode dataset with 3205 barcodes is made public at the same time, providing DNA barcodes of ca. 779 species, of which 2563 are identified as belonging to 444 validly published species. We recognise 862 extant and 18 fossil species of Nepticulidae in 22 extant genera and the fossil form genus Stigmellites. We count 192 valid Opostegidae species in 7 genera, without fossils. We...

On the history and type specimens of the Cape Verde Cane Warbler Acrocephalus brevipennis (Keulemans, 1866) (Aves, Sylviidae) Naturalis
Hazevoet, C.J..
The Cape Verde Cane Warbler Acrocephalus brevipennis was first described in 1866, and again in 1871 and 1883. These descriptions were all made after specimens from the same series. A type specimen was never designated and only one syntype from the original series can be traced today. The taxonomic history of the species is discussed and the single remaining syntype described. The present status and distribution of the species are briefly discussed.

Geological Study Collection of the Mercury Mine in Idrija Naturalis
Car, J.; Rezun, B..
The collection and classification of various geological samples has a long tradition in the Idrija Mercury Mine. In the second half of the 19th century geological collection was prepared and arranged by M.V. Lipold. In 1956, a rich petrographic-palaeontological collection was created at the Municipal Museum in Idrija. Due to the exceptional genesis and development of the Idrija ore deposit, many of the petrological, structural and ore samples are, from the professional aspect, quite unique. The collected materials, which were mostly unclassified and deposited in the quarters of the former mine geological service, were formed into a Mine Geological Collection comprised of 7 thematic collections presenting an overview of all aspects of the geological...

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 55. A re-examination of the date of publication of Jerdon’s Second Supplement to the Catalogue of the Birds of southern India Naturalis
Dickinson, E.C.; Gregory, S.M.S..
Because Jerdon’s Second Supplement, published in 1845, reflects an exchange of information with Edward Blyth, the date of issue requires interpretation to position it in relation to several papers that year by Blyth. The evidence suggests that we should accept that it appeared soon after 9th August 1845. The only names potentially affected by this resolution are the generic name Phragamaticola the establishment of which is reviewed, and Phragamaticola olivacea ‘Blyth’ Jerdon, which is in synonymy.

Langebeek, R..
This dissertation analyzes the evolution and the way of exposition in museums of natural history in the 19e century till the beginning of the 20e century. The analysis is based on the development of the « Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle » of Paris, the British Museum of London, and the national museum of natural history of Leiden. The first chapter describes the creation of natural history collections in Holland within the tradition of collecting from the 16e century till the creation of the National Museum of Natural History in 1820. The second chapter traces the creation of the three above mentioned museums. Here, the internal and external factors which played a role in their realization are investigated. The third chapter analyzes the role of the...

The early specimens of the potto Perodicticus potto (Statius Müller, 1776) in the National Museum of Natural History, Leiden, with the selection of a neotype Naturalis
Smeenk, C.; Godfrey, L.R.; Williams, F.L..
The potto was first recorded and figured by Willem Bosman in 1704. The name Lemur potto Statius Müller, 1776 is exclusively based upon Bosman’s account and figure, which are reproduced in full. The type locality is Elmina on the Gold Coast, the present Ghana. No type specimen was collected. The early pottos in the Leiden Museum are listed and their history is given, with special reference to the animals obtained by H.S. Pel. The publications on this material are reviewed. An adult female, RMNH 39375: mounted skin and skeleton acquired by Pel in 1849 at Dabocrom (Dabo Krom) near Sekondi, coastal Ghana, is designated the neotype of Lemur potto Statius Müller, 1776. The neotype is extensively described and figured. Taxonomic notes on the putative (sub)species...

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 38. The McClelland drawings and a reappraisal of the 1835-36 survey of the birds of Assam Naturalis
Dickinson, E.C.; Walters, M.P..
McClelland brought back specimens and drawings from a survey in 1835-36 (and perhaps 1836-37). New birds were described in a paper read by Horsfield (1840). A comparison of the McClelland drawings of birds, held at the British Library, with the type specimens of birds newly named in 1840 and with other material has shown that McClelland’s collection was not fully reported. McClelland actually recorded about 170 species not just 96 as then listed. Some birds listed in 1840 were misidentified, of these some have been corrected earlier but at least one is here newly considered and looks as if it needs further correction. Taxonomic and nomenclatural notes are included when necessary. The correct name to apply to the one species in the genus Melanochlora, the...

Has one of Captain Cook’s possums landed in Leiden? The possible holotype of Pseudocheirus peregrinus (Boddaert, 1785) Naturalis
Smeenk, C..
The identity of an old female specimen of Pseudocheirus peregrinus (Boddaert, 1785) in the National Museum of Natural History, Leiden, is discussed and the early descriptions and nomenclatural history of the species are reviewed. The assumption by Temminck (1824) and Jentink (1888) that the animal originated from one of Cook’s expeditions is extensively considered, since in that case it would be the holotype of Didelphis peregrinus Boddaert, 1785 and of some objective synonyms. The documentation of the specimen is insufficient to draw a definitive conclusion. However, the damage to the facial skin of the animal collected at Endeavour River in 1770 mentioned by Pennant (1781) would agree with the state of the Leiden specimen, which must have been badly...

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 48. Nomenclatural chaos untangled, resulting in the naming of the formally undescribed Cacatua species from the Tanimbar Islands, Indonesia (Psittaciformes: Cacatuidae) Naturalis
Roselaar, C.S.; Michels, J.P..
The history and taxonomic status of the species-group names Lophochroa goffini Finsch, 1863, and Cacatua tanimberensis Roselaar & Prins, 2000, both used to name the Tanimbar Corella, are reviewed nomenclaturally. It is confirmed that Lophochroa goffini (sensu Finsch, 1863) is not applicable to the Tanimbar Corella, but represents a junior synonym of Cacatua ducorpsii Pucheran, 1853, as shown by Roselaar & Prins (2000). The substitute name Cacatua tanimberensis they proposed is an objective junior synonym of L. goffini and subjective junior synonym of C. ducorpsii. From the nomenclatural point of view, the Tanimbar Corella remains undescribed and is here named.

The Royal Natural History Collection in Vienna (18th century): from possessing minerals as a private treasure towards territorial ambitions as consciousness Naturalis
Klemun, M..
This paper deals with a famous private natural history collection of the court, transformed to a public collection of the state. Associated is a very important question: how cultural and political structures became a dimension of a collection. In order to establish a Court Natural History Cabinet of its own, separate from other collections (“Physical Cabinet,” The Coin and Antique Collection), Emperor Franz Stephan von Lothringen (1708- 1765) decides in the middle of the 18th century to buy the famous ‘museo’ of Jean de Baillou, who had worked as a director of gardens and mines in Tuscany. The Collection of de Baillou consisted mainly of minerals, which were collected in Italy (some came from famous places all over the world), and fossils, particularly...

The nomenclature of the African wild ass Naturalis
Groves, C.P.; Smeenk, C..
The 19th-century reports on the occurrence and identity of wild asses in North-East Africa are reviewed, as well as the names applied in various publications by Fitzinger and von Heuglin, respectively. The first published name for the African wild ass, Asinus africanus Fitzinger, 1858, is a nomen nudum. The name Equus taeniopus von Heuglin, 1861 is rejected as indeterminable, as it is based on an animal that cannot be identified and may have been a hybrid between a domestic donkey and a Somali wild ass; the type has not been preserved. The first available name thus becomes Asinus africanus von Heuglin & Fitzinger, 1866. A lectotype is designated: a skull of an adult female collected by von Heuglin near Atbara River, Sudan, and present in the Museum für...
