An Overview of the Canadian Agriculture and Agri-Food System AgEcon
This 2008 report provides an economic overview of the Canadian agriculture and agri-food system. It is meant to be a multi-purpose reference document to provide: an introduction to the agriculture and agri-food system; a snapshot of structural changes that are occurring throughout the system in response to various factors; and background data and information to inform public discussions on challenges and opportunities facing the Canadian agriculture and agri-food system. It continues by reviewing each segment of the system, going upstream from consumers to food distribution, food, beverage and...

U.S. Honey Supply Chain: Structural Change, Promotions and the China Connection AgEcon
Ward, Ronald W.; Boynton, Bruce.
Honey is a by‐product of the pollination of plants and essential to almost all agricultural plant product. Demand for honey provides a partial compensation for the pollination services. Hence, programs to support honey demand such as promotions are potentially very important to the agricultural sector as well as the honey industry. Honey is utilized for table consumption and for manufacturing and both U.S. domestic and foreign honey imports both contribute to the U.S. honey availability. Econometric models are estimated showing the domestic table‐use and manufacturing demand with the models explicitly incorporating the effects of generic promotion of honey. Rates-of‐ return to the U.S. honey promotion programs are estimated with rates assigned to domestic...

ALBERTA AND THE EU-27: PAST TRADE RELATIONS AND FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES AgEcon
Emter, Nicholas A.; Mirus, Rolf.
Canada and the EU-27 are negotiating a comprehensive economic partnership agreement against the backdrop of the stalled multilateral negotiations under the auspices of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The new agreement is expected to stimulate trade, investment, and technology transfer between the two partners. This report provides a review of the last 15 years of Alberta’s experience in exporting goods to the EU-27, with the goal of gaining insights into how freer trade could affect future exports to the region. First, we summarize the state of bilateral economic relations between the prospective partners, relying in part on a study jointly sponsored by the EU and the Government of Canada. The second part focuses on the exports to the EU from Alberta...

U.S. KIWIFRUIT INDUSTRY MODEL: ANNUAL SUPPLY AND MONTHLY DEMAND AgEcon
Peterson, Hikaru Hanawa; Willett, Lois Schertz.
A dynamic econometric model of the U.S. kiwifruit industry provides a framework for empirical analysis of small-scale commodities, particularly those used by producers for diversification. Production and marketing processes are explained by annual and monthly components, respectively. Results confirm that plantings were speculative and that economic feasibility critically impacts acreage retention as the industry matures. Prices at alternative outlets and fruit quality in storage affect monthly shipments. Flexibilities of monthly f.o.b. prices imply elastic kiwifruit demand, and imports are found to be substitutes. The industry could increase its average annual gross revenue by marketing the crop earlier in the season.

Violence, Political Instability, and International Trade: Evidence from Kenya’s Cut Flower Sector AgEcon
Muhammad, Andrew; D'Souza, Anna; Amponsah, William A..
Abstract: We assess whether and how violence and political instability affect trade between developed and developing countries considering the special case of EU imports of Kenyan roses after the 2007/08 post-election violence and political instability in Kenya. Using the Rotterdam model to estimate EU demand for roses from Kenya and other global competitors, we find evidence of a structural change in the import growth rate for Kenya, approximately equivalent to an 18.6% tariff. These results highlight the importance of non-tariff barriers to trade and contribute to the growing literature on the role of insecurity and instability in hindering international trade.

The System-Wide Approach to Import Allocation: The Cases of Japanese Import Demand for Citrus Juices and United Kingdom Import Demand for Fresh Apples AgEcon
Seale, James L., Jr.; Lee, Jonq-Ying; Aviphant, Pattana.
The system-wide approach is used to develop an import allocation model based on blockwise dependence. The import demand system is parameterized using the absolute version of the Rotterdam model. Two empirical examples are given to illustrate the approach.

The relationship between trade and price volatility in the Mexican and US maize markets AgEcon
Araujo-Enciso, Sergio Rene.
The supply of maize in the Mexican market depends to a large extent from the US imports which represent a large share of the domestic consumption. Furthermore imports exhibit a seasonal pattern, and peaks are often found close to low levels of domestic production and stocks. The present research suggests that there is a link between imports and prices volatility. Below a threshold value, imports and volatility are not related, but beyond the threshold it is volatility the variable driving imports. From the results one can argue that imports have served as a measure to stabilize prices when the domestic supply is scarce.

A Case Study of China's Commercial Pork Value Chain AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Hu, Dinghuan; Fang, Cheng.
In China, with the cost of improved technology rising, surplus labor shrinking, and demand for food quality and safety increasing, it will be just a matter of time before the country’'s hog production sector will be commercialized like that of developed countries. However, even if China'’s cost of production converges to international levels, as shown in this case study, China may continue to retain some competitive advantage because of the labor-intensive nature of the marketing services involved in hog processing and meat distribution. The supply of variety meats offers the most promising market opportunity for foreign suppliers in China. The market may open further if the tariff rate for variety meats is reduced from 20% and harmonized with the pork...

The Impact of Domestic and Import Prices on U.S. Lamb Imports: A Production System Approach AgEcon
Muhammad, Andrew; Jones, Keithly G.; Hahn, William F..
As U.S. lamb imports increased relative to domestic production, and the relative share of chilled to frozen lamb imports increased, importers of chilled lamb have become less responsive to domestic and import prices, while the direct opposite is the case for frozen lamb imports. From 1990 to 2003, chilled lamb imports from Australia and New Zealand became less and less responsive to U.S. prices, and frozen imports became more responsive. Unconditional own-price elasticities also show that, over time, imports of chilled lamb became less responsive to import prices while frozen imports became more responsive to import prices.

Policy distortions in the segmented rice market AgEcon
Rakotoarisoa, Manitra A..
High production and export subsidies in developed countries and high protection in both developed and developing countries have distorted rice trade. This study estimates the impact of rice policy distortions on developing countries’ rice production and trade potential. Because rice markets are highly segmented, major rice types are differentiated to estimate the impact of current and likely policy reforms. Analysis in long-grain, high-quality rice focuses on rice import and export markets in Latin America and shows that reduction of direct and implicit export subsidies in the US will benefit regional suppliers such as Argentina and Uruguay. Analysis of Indonesia’s import market of ordinary long-grain rice, where protection is high, reveals that tariff...
