Sponge interactions with spatial competitors in the Spermonde Archipelago Naturalis
Voogd, N.J. de; Becking, L.E.; Hoeksema, B.W.; Noor, A.; Soest, R.W.M. van.
This study describes the in situ effects of four bioactive sponges on their neighbours at three different locations and two depths in the Spermonde Archipelago, SW Sulawesi, Indonesia. The natural rates of interaction between the sponge species and eight possible competitive invertebrate groups were defined and quantified in circular subplots, this was repeated 25x for each of the four species and for each location and depth. Most interactions occurred with other sponges and with corals. Coral overgrowth by the four target species caused necrosis in more than 85 % of these interactions, whereas this was less than 25 % in sponge overgrowths. These results suggest that the toxins are used in spatial competition and that the concentrations of the bioactive...

New species of Krombeinius (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Perilampidae) from Indonesia, and the first description of first-instar larva for the genus Naturalis
Darling, D.C..
Two new species of Krombeinius from Indonesia are described and illustrated, K. kubah from Java and K. dictyon from Sulawesi. In addition, K. eumenidarum Bouček and K. megalaspis (Cameron) are redescribed to allow comparison with the closely related species, K. dictyon and K. kubah, respectively. The first-instar larva of K. kubah is described from an aculeate wasp cocoon associated with the holotype and these planidia are compared with those known for Perilampidae and Eucharitidae. The new species are accommodated in the key to species and phylogenetic analysis of the genus presented in Darling (1988) and the biogeographic implications of the phylogeny are discussed.

A new species of living scallop of the genus Anguipecten (Bivalvia, Pectinidae) from the tropical Indo-Pacific Naturalis
Dijkstra, H.H..
Introduction During the Indonesian-French Karubar cruise to eastern Indonesia a new scallop was found near the Kai Islands, which was provisionally identified by Dijkstra & Kastoro(1997: 279, figs 156-159), based on a few dead specimens from the upper bathyal depths. Subsequently, more material was collected by the French Musorstom 9 cruise to the Marquesas Islands (French Polynesia), sufficient to describe it herein. All specimens (empty shells) were deposited in MNHN, with voucher specimens in the private pectinoid reference collection of the author.

The hydrocoral genus Millepora (Hydrozoa: Capitata: Milleporidae) in Indonesia Naturalis
Razak, T.B.; Hoeksema, B.W..
This revision of Indonesian Millepora species is based on the morphology of museum specimens and photographed specimens in the field. Based on the use of pore characters and overall skeleton growth forms, which are normally used for the classification of Millepora, the present study concludes that six of seven Indo-Pacific species appear to occur in Indonesia, viz., M. dichotoma Forskål, 1775, M. exaesa Forskål, 1775, M. platyphylla Hemprich & Ehrenberg, 1834, M. intricata Milne-Edwards, 1857 (including M. intricata forma murrayi Quelch, 1884), M. tenera Boschma, 1949, and M. boschmai de Weerdt & Glynn, 1991, which so far was considered an East Pacific endemic. Of the 13 species previously reported from the Indo-Pacific, six were synonymized. M....

Description and mapping of the coral reefs investigated during the Snellius-II Expedition in Indonesia Naturalis
Duyl, F.C. van.
Macrohabitat distribution, zonation and morphology of coral reefs in the Flores Sea region were investigated. Descriptions of reefs and reef maps are presented, based on large area surveys and aerial photographs. Diving equipment, underwater scooter, depth recorder and different methods of aerial photography were employed to collect data. The aim of the surveys was to acquire synoptic views of the study areas and to attribute to a uniform classification system applicable to reef mapping throughout the archipelago.

A new Suberites (Demospongiae: Hadromerida: Suberitidae) from the tropical Indo-West Pacific Naturalis
Becking, L.E.; Lim, S.C..
In this paper we describe Suberites diversicolor spec. nov. (Porifera: Demospongiae: Hadromerida: Suberitidae) from four enclosed anchialine lakes located in Indonesia and from a confined system in Singapore. Initially this species was thought to be specific to anchialine lakes, but further comparison to coastal areas indicated that it is more widespread in inshore systems. We have used morphological characters to distinguish this species and a molecular marker to confirm that all types are the same species. Suberites diversicolor spec. nov. is encrusting or massive with small protrusions or larger globular branches. The external colour can be olive-green, blue, purple, red-orange, or orange-yellow. Suberites diversicolor spec. nov. differs from known...

The avifauna of Flores (Lesser Sunda Islands) Naturalis
Mees, G.F..
The avifauna of the island of Flores (Lesser Sunda Islands) is reviewed. Introductory sections, which include a chapter on the history of ornithological discovery, are followed by the main part, a systematic account in which each species and subspecies known from Flores is treated separately. A discussion of the zoogeography, a gazetteer, a list of references and an index complete the volume. At present 214 forms (210 species) are accepted as having been reliably recorded. Of these, ca. 160 are, or may be assumed to be, residents, and of ca. 100 the eggs have been collected and are described. The balance consists of visiting sea and freshwater birds, migrants from the North and migrants from the South. It is likely that few additions remain to be made to...

Results of the Rumphius Biohistorical Expedition to Ambon (1990). Part 13. Mollusca, Bivalvia, Cardiidae Naturalis
Poorten, J.J. ter.
31 Cardiidae species have been collected in Ambon, Indonesia by the Rumphius Biohistorical Expedition, comprising circa 40% of the known species of this family from the Indonesian archipelago. Seven of these could be traced to the figures given by Rumphius (1705) and an additional two, taking into account some reservations about the identity of Rumphius' depicted shells. This implies that all but one of Rumphius' species, viz. Tridacna (Tridacna) gigas (Linnaeus, 1758), have been reencountered by the present expedition. The expedition has yielded the first Indonesian published records of two species: Fulvia (Laevifulvia) lineonotata Vidal, 1994 and Acrosterigma dianthinum (Melvill & Standen, 1899). For the latter this implies a considerable range...
