Human Capital, Household Welfare, and Children’s Schooling in Mozambique AgEcon
Handa, Sudhanshu; Simler, Kenneth R.; Harrower, Sarah.
In 1996, following years of war, the government of Mozambique invited IFPRI to analyze the country’s widespread poverty to help develop a strategy for alleviating it, based on a nationally representative household survey of living conditions. As part of the collaboration, IFPRI also provided training in policy analysis to researchers at the Ministry of Planning and Finance and to faculty at Eduardo Mondlane University. The initial collaborative work on the poverty assessment report by IFPRI and its host institutions was the starting point for numerous papers, policy briefs, seminars, and reports. Results from the poverty assessment and an IFPRI research report titled Rebuilding after War: Micro-level Determinants of Poverty Reduction in Mozambique...

Simoes, Orlando; Velarde, Irene; Schiavone, Elena.

Agricultural Extension for the Invisible Actors in Hunger Drama in Rural Nigeria AgEcon
Egbuna, Ngozi.
It is now an undisputable fact that rural women farmers produce more than half of all the food grown in Nigeria. They are mainly responsibility for providing food for their families as they plant, harvest and fish, gather fuel wood, fetch water, cook as well as process and sell foodstuffs. This paper describes them as invisible actors in the hunger drama because though they feed the nation, they have little or no access to factors of production that boost productivity such as extension services. Indeed, while the dominance of women in rural areas are evident, policy makers, planners and extension officials often behave as if women did not exist, as if the situation and needs of all farmers were the same, whether men or women. Agricultural extension is one...

Female Schooling, Non-Market Productivity, and Labor Market Participation in Nigeria AgEcon
Aromolaran, Adebayo B..
Economists have argued that increasing female schooling positively influences the labor supply of married women by inducing a faster rise in market productivity relative to non-market productivity. I use the Nigerian Labor Force Survey to investigate how own and husband’s schooling affect women’s labor market participation. I find that additional years of postsecondary education increases wage market participation probability by as much as 15.2%. A marginal increase in primary schooling has no effect on probability of wage employment, but could enhance participation rates in self-employment by about 5.40%. These effects are likely to be stronger when a woman is married to a more educated spouse. The results suggest that primary education is more productive...

Certain elements of population retaining ability and the ability to economically provide for a population of the countryside AgEcon
Tikasz, Ildiko Edit.
According to the data of population density, most of Hungary’s territory has rural features. Achieving EU supports in order to focus on developing the most underdeveloped communities, and in order to lessen the differences between communities, to establish priorities and to determine the rank of rural communities based on their development potential is necessary. The need of measurability arises because of comparison and classification. A possible target area is an analysis of population retaining ability and the ability to economically provide for a population of rural areas.

MULTIPLE JOB-HOLDING AMONG U.S. FARM WOMEN: OFF-FARM WORK AND ON-FARM DECISION-MAKING USING A BARGAINING APPROACH AgEcon
Findeis, Jill L.; Swaminathan, Hema.
Participation rates for farm women in off-farm labor markets continue to increase, as does their participation in making major farm decisions such as whether to buy or sell land, adopt a new production practice or invest in farm equipment. Data from the Survey of U.S. Farm Women conducted in 2001 by Penn State in collaboration with researchers at the Economic Research Service and in collaboration with NASS are used to examine the multiple work roles of farm women off the farm and in farming. Descriptive statistics for the results of the 2001 survey are compared to those from the last major survey of U.S. farm women conducted by Rosenfeld in 1980. Then, using data limited to farm couples, models of job choice considering jointness in participation are...

The Extended Family and Intrahousehold Allocation: Inheritance and Investments in Children in the Rural Philippines AgEcon
Quisumbing, Agnes R..
This paper examines the role of the extended family on investments in children, using data from a retrospective survey of three generations in the rural Philippines. Econometric results show that interactions between grandparent characteristics and child gender significantly affect the distribution of proposed land bequests between sons and daughters. However, grandparents significantly affect gender-specific investments in children's education only in resource-constrained families. Family-specific effects are more important in determining the pattern of investment in children within the nuclear family, while individual heterogeneity rather than family-specific unobservables dominates the extended family results. Interactions between parent characteristics...

The Effect of Distance and Road Quality on Food Prices, Marketing Margins, and Traders' Wages: Evidence from Zaire AgEcon
Minten, Bart; Kyle, Steven C..
Major investments in infrastructure rehabilitation have been undertaken by govemments, development banks and donors in developing countries in recent decades. In Sub-Saharan Africa roaddeterioration isperceivedtobeoneofthemaincausesforthelimitedsupplyresponseafter price liberalization in agricultural markets. Studies of the quantitative effects on marketing margins are rare. This analysis shows that the wholesale -producer food price margin is strongly influenced by the quality of the road infrastructure. Evidence from Zaire shows that food prices decrease faster than transportation costs increase and that traders' wages are higher on bad roads. A trader's model incorporating uncertainty in input costs is used to explain this phenomenon.

Social Security, Unemployment, and Growth AgEcon
Brauninger, Michael.
The paper develops an overlapping generations model that highlights interactions between social security, unemployment and growth. The social security system has two components: old age pensions and unemployment insurance. Pensions have a different effect on economic growth. Both pensions and unemployment benefits influence equilibrium unemployment caused by wage bargaining. Since unemployment impairs growth, both types of social security have an indirect, negative effect on growth.

Productivity Differences between Male and Female Managed Farms in the Eastern and Central Highlands of Kenya AgEcon
Njuki, Jemimah M.; Kihiyo, V.B.M.; O'Ktingati, A.; Place, Frank.
This study was carried out in an agroforestry farming system in the central highlands of Kenya. The purpose of the study was to compare the productivity and technical efficiency of male and female managed farms. The study also sought to investigate the sources of differences in the Total Value Product and the technical efficiency of farms. Using a female dummy, the study found no evidence of differences in total value product between male and female managed farms. Male managed farms were however more technically efficient than female managed farms. The highest proportion of farms in the lowest bracket of efficiency levels was female managed farms. The total value product was found to be positively affected by age of the farmer, female labour and inputs...

Menezes, Sonia Souza Mendonca; Cerdan, Claire.

Shocks, livestock asset dynamics and social capital in Ethiopia AgEcon
Mogues, Tewodaj.
This paper uses household survey panel data of 416 rural households to study livestock asset dynamics in the north-east of Ethiopia. The period under examination (1996-2003) was marked by severe environmental shocks, including a series of droughts. Using as point of departure the literature on the evolution of productive assets in the presence of risk, which relates asset paths to initial endowments, we test the hypothesis of wealth divergence and the existence of asset poverty traps. Results indicate rather that livestock asset dynamics are marked by convergence over time. Examining the role of social capital in recovery and growth of households’ endowments, both local social relationships as well as ‘bridging’ social capital seem to have a positive...
