Crepidula fornicata L. (mollusque, gastéropode) en baie de Marennes-Oléron : cartographie des fonds par sonar à balayage latéral et estimation du stock ArchiMer
Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Pichocki-seyfried, C; Walker, P; De Montaudouin, Xavier; Palud, Cecile; Heral, Maurice.
Extensive and detailed subtidal ground mapping of the Marennes-Oleron Bay and Fouras-Aix areas was performed with a side-scan sonar. Side-scan sonographs gave a comprehensive view of sedimentological bottom environments and also allowed us to outline locations of grounds colonised by the gastropod mollusc Crepidula fornicata L. with a precise estimate of their surface. A sedimentological map of the centre of the Marennes-Oleron Bay is given, describing spatial organisation of the following four types of sediment: pure mud, fine sand, coarse sand and rocks. Crepidula beds were also recognised on sonographs and were estimated to cover 181 hectares in the Fouras-Aix area and 615 hectares within the Marennes-Oleron Bay. Standard sampling methods were then...

Spatio-temporal dynamics of a Zostera noltii dominated community over a period of fluctuating salinity in a shallow lagoon, Southern France ArchiMer
Charpentier, Aude; Grillas, P; Lescuyer, F; Coulet, E; Auby, Isabelle.
The consequences of a sudden decrease in water salinity on a macrophyte community dominated by the marine species Zostera noltii were investigated in a shallow coastal lagoon (Southern France). The expected change in the community assemblage was a competitive displacement of Z. noltii by Potamogeton pectinatus and Ruppia cirrhosa. However, the results of an eight-year survey did not validate this hypothesis. Zostera noltii remained dominant after three years at low salinity (ca. 5) and then suddenly disappeared within one year. The decline of Z. noltii was not associated with an increase of other species. The maximum depth colonized by all species decreased, suggesting that light availability became a limiting factor for the aquatic vegetation. The high...

Analysing Temporal Variability in Spatial Distributions Using Min–Max Autocorrelation Factors: Sardine Eggs in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Petitgas, Pierre; Renard, Didier; Desassis, Nicolas; Huret, Martin; Romagnan, Jean-baptiste; Doray, Mathieu; Woillez, Mathieu; Rivoirard, Jacques.
This paper presents a novel application of the geostatistical multivariate method known as min–max autocorrelation factors (MAFs) for analysing fisheries survey data in a space–time context. The method was used to map essential fish habitats and evaluate the variability in time of their occupancy. Research surveys at sea on marine fish stocks have been undertaken for several decades now. The data are time series of yearly maps of fish density, making it possible to analyse the space–time variability in fish spatial distributions. Space–time models are key to addressing conservation issues requiring the characterization of variability in habitat maps over time. Here, the variability in fisheries survey data series is decomposed in space and time to address...

Hyperspectral and Lidar: Complementary Tools to Identify Benthic Features and Assess the Ecological Status of Sabellaria alveolata Reefs ArchiMer
Bajjouk, Touria; Jauzein, Cecile; Drumetz, Lucas; Dalla Mura, Mauro; Duval, Audrey; Dubois, Stanislas.
Sabellaria alveolata is a sedentary gregarious tube-building species widely distributed from southwest Scotland to Morocco. This species builds what are currently considered the largest European biogenic reefs in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel (France). As an ecosystem engineer, S. alveolata generates small to large scale topographic complexity, creating numerous spatial and trophic niches for other species to colonize. Sabellaria reefs are also under anthropogenic pressures, leading locally to massive degradation. However, stakeholders lack spatially explicit measures of reef ecological status, at adapted spatial resolution to provide key management information for this protected habitat. Traditional field surveys are extremely time-consuming and rely on...

The use of multibeam backscatter and bathymetry as a means of identifying faunal assemblages in a deep-sea cold seep ArchiMer
Sen, Arunima; Ondreas, Helene; Gaillot, Arnaud; Marcon, Yann; Augustin, Jean-marie; Olu, Karine.
Deep-sea ecosystems have attracted considerable commercial interest in recent years because of their potential to sustain a diverse range of mankind's industrial needs. If these systems are to be preserved or exploited in a sustainable manner, mapping habitats and species distributions is critical. As biodiversity at cold-seeps or other deep-sea ecosystems is driven by habitat heterogeneity, imagery is the obvious choice for characterizing these systems and has indeed proven extremely valuable towards mapping biogenic habitats formed by dense aggregations of large sized species, such as coral reefs, tubeworm bushes or bivalve beds. However, the acquisition of detailed images with resolution sufficient for reliable identification is extremely time...

In order to follow the Preventive Chemotherapy (PC) for the transmission control as recommended by WHO, Gabon initiated in 2014 the mapping of Schistosomiasis and Soil Transmitted Helminthiasis (STH). Here, we report the results of the Northern and Eastern health regions, representing a third of the land area and 12% of its total population. All nine departments of the two regions were surveyed and from each, five schools were examined with 50 schoolchildren per school. The parasitological examinations were realized using the filtration method for urine and the Kato-Katz technique for stool samples. Overall 2245 schoolchildren (1116 girls and 1129 boys), mean aged 11.28 +/- 0.04 years, were examined. Combined schistosomiasis and STH affected 1270 (56.6%)...

Predictive modelling of coastal habitats using remote sensing data and fuzzy logic: A case for seaweed in Brittany (France) ArchiMer
De Oliveira, Eric; Populus, Jacques; Guillaumont, Brigitte.
The aim of this study is to model the seaweed species distribution with respect to environmental parameters. We focused on fixed species of algae, such as fucoids. Firstly, we identified environmental parameters, such as substratum nature, immersion time, exposure, etc., which determine the seaweed distribution. Secondly, we used field sampling to compute the distribution laws for seaweed according to the environmental parameters selected. Thirdly, we used the distribution laws and the environmental parameters to perform predictive mapping of seaweed belts with a fuzzy logic method. Seaweed presence is directly dependent on the nature of the substratum. In the intertidal domain we used an alternative, because seaweed beds can be observed directly. We...

Anatomy of the Lymphatic Drainage of the Upper Limb and Breast and its Role in Lymphedema Prevention after Breast Cancer Treatment International Journal of Morphology
Cuadrado,G. A; Andrade,M. F. C; Akamatsu,F. E; Jacomo,A. L.
The surgical treatment of breast cancer has been enhanced throughout the years in order to offer oncologically safer and more effective results with lower esthetic impact and fewer sequelae. The lymphedema of the upper limb is still an iatrogenic result of great incidence and morbidity after this treatment. A possible existence of independent breast and upper limb lymphatic pathways has become the issue of many researchers willing to minimize its occurrence. This review aims to compare the lymphatic pathways in the axilla described by traditional anatomy books and recently published articles about Axillary Reverse Mapping (ARM). With this purpose, a comparative table was made with the descriptions found in books and articles, a statistic table of the data...

A non-parametric indicator Kriging method for generating coastal sediment type map. OceanDocs
Liu, Fucheng; Peng, Jun; Zhang, Cunyong.
Coastal sediment type map has been widely used in marine economic and engineering activities, but the traditional mapping methods had some limitations due to their intrinsic assumption or subjectivity. In this paper, a non-parametric indicator Kriging method has been proposed for generating coastal sediment map. The method can effectively avoid mapping subjectivity, has no special requirements for the sample data to meet second-order stationary or normal distribution, and can also provide useful information on the quantitative evaluation of mapping uncertainty. The application of the method in the southern sea area of Lianyungang showed that much more convincing mapping results could be obtained compared with the traditional methods such as IDW, Kriging...

Soybean crop area estimation by Modis/Evi data PAB
Gusso,Anibal; Formaggio,Antônio Roberto; Rizzi,Rodrigo; Adami,Marcos; Rudorff,Bernardo Friedrich Theodor.
The objective of this work was to develop a procedure to estimate soybean crop areas in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Estimations were made based on the temporal profiles of the enhanced vegetation index (Evi) calculated from moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (Modis) images. The methodology developed for soybean classification was named Modis crop detection algorithm (MCDA). The MCDA provides soybean area estimates in December (first forecast), using images from the sowing period, and March (second forecast), using images from the sowing and maximum crop development periods. The results obtained by the MCDA were compared with the official estimates on soybean area of the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística. The coefficients of...
