An overview of Brazilian mammalogy: trends, biases and future directions Rev. Bras. Zool.
Brito,Daniel; Oliveira,Leonardo C.; Oprea,Monik; Mello,Marco A. R..
Mammals are among the most charismatic and well-studied organisms, and Brazil harbors the largest mammal diversity of the world. The Brazilian Society of Mammalogy was established in 1985, and since 2001 it organizes the Brazilian Congress of Mammalogy. We used the proceedings of all three editions of this congress together with papers indexed in Web of Science and Scielo to evaluate trends in Brazilian mammalogy. All contributions were categorized according to mammalian order, biome, topic of research and state of authors' affiliation. Our results show that mammalian orders with higher species richness receive more attention, but the ranking is different between abstracts and papers. Higher species richness did not translate into more attention for more...

Meta-analyses of experimental data in the animal sciences R. Bras. Zootec.
St-Pierre,Normand Roger.
In certain areas of animal research, such as nutrition, quantitative summarizations of literature data are periodically needed. In such instances, statistical methods dealing with the analysis of summary data (generally from the literature) must be used. These methods are known as meta-analyses. The implementation of a meta-analysis is done in several phases. The first phase defines the study objectives and identifies the criteria for selecting prior publications to be used in the construction of the database. Publications must be scrupulously evaluated for their quality before being entered into the database. During this phase, it is important to carefully encode each record with pertinent descriptive attributes (experiments, treatments, etc.) to serve as...

Metabolisable energy prediction in energy feedstuffs and evaluation of the stepwise validation procedure using bootstrapping Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Oliveira,Newton Tavares Escocard de; Pozza,Paulo Cesar; Castilha,Leandro Dalcin; Pasquetti,Tiago Junior; Langer,Carolina Natali.
ABSTRACT The use of predicted values of apparent metabolisable energy (AME), obtained from regression equations, can be useful for both research institutions and nutrition industries. However, there is a need to validate independent samples to ensure that the predicted equation for AME is reliable. In this study, data was collected in order to estimate the prediction equations of corn, sorghum and wheat bran for pig feed, based on the chemical composition, in addition to evaluating the validity of the stepwise selection procedure regressive method of non-parametric bootstrap resampling. Data from metabolism trials in pigs and the chemical composition of feedstuffs was collected from both Brazilian and international literature, expressed as dry matter....

META-ANALYSIS OF THE HISTORY OF THE STUDY OF THE FRESHWATER TURTLE AND TORTOISE FAUNA OF COLOMBIA Acta biol.Colomb.
BOCK,Brian C; PÁEZ,Vivian P.
ABSTRACT The citations contained in a recent literature review on the freshwater turtle and tortoise species of Colombia were analyzed. Publishing rates on these species have been increasing exponentially since the 1950s, although many of the publications would not be detected using internet-based literature searches. The most common topics of publications were systematics and phylogeography, nesting ecology, and management. In the 1970s and 1980s, the rate of publishing on the ecology and genetics of Colombian populations lagged behind the rate of publishing on these topics for populations of Colombian freshwater turtle and tortoise species located in other countries, but currently the production of the two regions is comparable. Also, in other countries...

MADEIRA,KRISTIAN; DONDOSSOLA,EDUARDO R.; FARIAS,BRUNA F. DE; SIMON,CARLA S.; ALEXANDRE,MARIA C.M.; SILVA,BRUNO R.; ROSA,MARIA INÊS.
The objective of this work was to estimate the accuracy of mesothelin as a biomarker for ovarian cancer. A quantitative systematic review was performed. A comprehensive search of the Medline, LILACS, SCOPUS, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Biomed Central, and ISI Web of Science databases was conducted from January 1990 to June 2015. For inclusion in this systematic review, the papers must have measured mesothelin levels in at least two histological diagnoses; ovarian cancer (borderline or ovarian tumor) vs. benign or normal ovarian tissue. For each study, 2 x 2 contingency tables were constructed. We calculated the sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic odds ratio. The verification bias was performed according to QUADAS-2....

Discrepancy variation of dinucleotide microsatellite repeats in eukaryotic genomes Biol. Res.
GAO,HUAN; CAI,SHENGLI; YAN,BINLUN; CHEN,BAIYAO; YU,FEI.
To address whether there are differences of variation among repeat motif types and among taxonomic groups, we present here an analysis of variation and correlation of dinucleotide microsatellite repeats in eukaryotic genomes. Ten taxonomic groups were compared, those being primates, mammalia (excluding primates and rodentia), rodentia, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles, insects, molluscs, plants and fungi, respectively. The data used in the analysis is from the literature published in the Journal of Molecular Ecology Notes. Analysis of variation reveals that there are no significant differences between AC and AG repeat motif types. Moreover, the number of alleles correlates positively with the copy number in both AG and AC repeats. Similar conclusions...

Historical and current approaches of research synthesis in plant sciences Boletín de la Sociedad
Aguilar,Ramiro.
The progress of science has depended to a great extent on the ability of reaching general conclusions from a body of published research, making reviews essential to scientific development. Research reviews have provided the bases for conceptual syntheses and for development of general theories in many research areas of the natural sciences, as in the case of plant sciences. Historical approaches include narrative and "vote-counting" types of reviews, both of which present serious flaws that limit their ability to obtain robust generalizations. Currently, quantitative reviews such as metaanalyses are able to synthesize results from independent studies in a manner that is both objective and statistically defensible. Meta-analysis has been used to synthesize...

Is the relationship between population density and body size consistent across independent studies? A meta-analytical approach BJB
BINI,L. M.; COELHO,A. S. G; DINIZ-FILHO,J. A. F..
The Energetic Equivalence Rule (EER) is a controversial issue in ecology. This rule states that the amount of energy that each species uses per unit of area is independent of its body size. Here, we perform a meta-analytical procedure to combine and compare the slopes of population density and body size relationships across independent studies of mammals and birds. We then compared a distribution of 50,000 bootstrap combined slopes with the expected slope (b = -0.75) under the EER. The combined slopes obtained for mammals and birds separately were -0.755 and -0.321, respectively. The homogeneity hypothesis (i. e. within studies the slopes differ by no more than would be expected due sampling variation) was rejected in both cases. So, EER cannot be...

Sulbactam-based therapy for Acinetobacter baumannii infection: a systematic review and meta-analysis BJID
Chu,Haiqing; Zhao,Lan; Wang,Minggui; Liu,Yang; Gui,Tao; Zhang,Jingbo.
BACKGROUND: A number of studies have reported on the effectiveness of sulbactam-based therapies for Acinetobacter baumannii infection; however, there is little evidence that sulbactam-based therapies are more or less effective than alternative therapies. Unfortunately, there is a distinct lack of high quality data (i.e., from randomized controlled trials) available on this issue. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis comparing the efficacy of sulbactam-based and non-sulbactam-based regimens in the treatment of A. baumannii infection. METHODS: We searched PubMed, MEDLINE, Biomedical Central, Google Scholar, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, the Cochrane library, and the Directory of Open Access using the terms "sulbactam...

Association between BDNF G196A (Val66Met) polymorphism and cognitive impairment in patients with Parkinson's disease: a meta-analysis BJMBR
Wang,Qian; Liu,Jianfang; Guo,Yikun; Dong,Guanzhong; Zou,Wenying; Chen,Zhuoyou.
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is widely expressed in the central nervous system and prolongs the survival of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Several studies have recently investigated the association between BDNF G196A (Val66Met), a single nucleotide polymorphism influencing cognitive processes, and cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD), but with contradictory findings. Thus, this meta-analysis was performed to clarify the possible association. Relevant studies were identified by a systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases. The strength of the association was evaluated using crude odds ratios and 95% confidence interval. Finally, six studies involving 532 cases and...

Bai,Wenwei; Huang,Jingjing; Zhu,Min; Liu,Xiaoyong; Tao,Jianping.
Studies regarding the prognostic value of circulating adiponectin level in patients with heart failure are conflicting. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the association between elevated circulating adiponectin level and adverse outcomes in patients with heart failure. We searched PubMed and Embase databases from their inception to June 2018. Original observational studies that investigated the prognostic value of adiponectin in heart failure patients and reported all-cause mortality or combined endpoints of death/readmission as outcome measure were included. Pooled risk ratio (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated by higher versus lower circulating adiponectin level. A total of 7 studies involving 862 heart failure patients...

Association between tumor necrosis factor polymorphisms and rheumatoid arthritis as well as systemic lupus erythematosus: a meta-analysis BJMBR
Chen,Lin; Huang,Zhuochun; Liao,Yun; Yang,Bin; Zhang,Junlong.
Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) plays an important role in autoimmune diseases. Previous studies have investigated the association of TNF-α-238G/A (rs361525) and -308G/A (rs1800629) polymorphisms with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, no agreed conclusion had been made. Therefore, this meta-analysis was conducted to assess the associations of TNF-α-238G/A and -308G/A polymorphisms with RA and SLE risk. A systematic search was conducted in commonly used databases. Meta-analysis was performed by STATA12.0. A total of 43 studies were included. In the overall population, the TNF-α-238A allele was observed to be a protective factor for RA (A vs G: OR=0.75, 95%CI=0.57–0.99, P=0.040) and the TNF-α-308A allele was found...

Zhang,G.; Zou,J.; Liu,F.; Bao,Z.; Dong,F.; Huang,Y.; Yin,S..
Recent evidence shows that moxifloxacin could exert an antimicrobial effect against Helicobacter pylori in both in vitroand in vivo models. To systematically evaluate whether moxifloxacin-containing triple therapy could improve eradication rates and reduce side effects in first-line or second-line anti-H. pyloritreatment, eligible articles were identified by searches of electronic databases. We included all randomized trials comparing moxifloxacin-based triple therapy with standard triple or quadruple therapy during H. pylori eradication treatment. Statistical analysis was performed with Review Manager 5.0.10. Subanalysis/sensitivity analysis was also performed. We identified seven randomized trials (n=1263). Pooled H. pylori eradication rates were 79.03%...

Li,M.; Wang,L.; Wang,W.; Qi,X.L.; Tang,Z.Y..
Iron homeostasis dysregulation has been regarded as an important mechanism in neurodegenerative diseases. The H63D and C282Y polymorphisms in theHFE gene may be involved in the development of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) through the disruption of iron homeostasis. However, studies investigating the relationship between ALS and these two polymorphisms have yielded contradictory outcomes. We performed a meta-analysis to assess the roles of the H63D and C282Y polymorphisms of HFEin ALS susceptibility. PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched to identify relevant studies. Strict selection criteria and exclusion criteria were applied.
