Species or population? Systematic status of Vieja coatlicue (Teleostei: Cichlidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
McMahan,Caleb D.; Matamoros,Wilfredo A.; Elías,Diego J.; Piller,Kyle R..
ABSTRACT Pacific and Atlantic-slope rivers of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico contain two cichlid species of the genus Vieja relevant to the current study, V. zonata and V. coatlicue, respectively. The Atlantic-slope species was initially considered a population of uncertain taxonomic status and recently described as a distinct species based on three putatively diagnostic morphological characters. The objective of this study was to combine new and existing genetic data, along with reanalysis of morphological characters, to test the distinctiveness of V. coatlicue. Little genetic variability and no geographic structuring were recovered. Additionally, putatively diagnostic morphological character states were present across both species, failing to...

Spatial patterns of diversity at local and regional scales in a tropical lagoon Neotropical Ichthyology
Caballero-Vázquez,José Adán; Vega-Cendejas,María Eugenia.
The present study reports estimates of alpha (α), beta (β) and gamma (Γ) diversity for the fish community of Chacmochuch Lagoon (SE Mexico), a natural protected area located in the northern portion of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. Fish specimens were sampled in 2004 and 2006. Field work was carried out at three climatic peaks: at 13 stations using a 70 m-long beach seine. The collected data were supplemented with information obtained from a previous work conducted in 2002 and were then analyzed with multivariate statistical methods. In addition, fish composition results from this study were compared to those reported for other similar ecosystems of the region. A total of 68 fish species were recorded, determined as peripheral (high-salinity...

Fish diet composition in permanent and semi-permanent pools in tropical wetlands of the Yucatan Peninsula Neotropical Ichthyology
Hinojosa-Garro,Demián; Arceo-Gómez,Joselito; Zambrano,Luis; Escalera-Vázquez,Luis H..
We compared fish diet composition between permanent (P) and semi-permanent (SP) pools in Petenes Biosphere Reserve (PBR), Campeche. A total of 445 gut contents were examined to determine stomach relative fullness (RF), fish diet as index of niche breadth (INB) and diet overlap. In SP pools, species showed a RF of 1.66 (57.20 % empty stomachs) whereas in P pools, the RF was 2.91 (31.16%). We classified fish diet into six trophic groups: detritivorous, herbivorous-detritivorous, insectivorous, piscivorous, omnivorous and malacophagous. Species in P pools were found to be specialist. Conversely, species present in both habitats shifted to generalist patterns. There was a 54.0% dissimilarity in fish diet composition between pools. From all items identified,...

Morphometric variation of the Herichthys bartoni (Bean, 1892) species group (Teleostei: Cichlidae): How many species comprise H. labridens (Pellegrin, 1903)? Neotropical Ichthyology
Mejía,Omar; Pérez-Miranda,Fabián; León-Romero,Yatzil; Soto-Galera,Eduardo; Luna,Efraín de.
Cichlids of the tribe Heroini have long been a source of taxonomical conflict. In particular, the species included in the Herichthys bartoni group have failed to be recovered as monophyletic in different molecular studies. In this paper we use traditional and geometric morphometrics to evaluate morphological variation in the species included in the H. bartoni complex in order to evaluate the number of species it contains. An update of a previously published DNA barcoding study suggests the existence of three genetic clusters that included the six recognized species analyzed in this study, none of them recovered as monophyletic. On the other hand, geometric morphometrics arise as a useful tool to discriminate species due that traditional morphometrics...

Range extension and microhabitat of Lightiella incisa (Cephalocarida) OMA
De Troch, M.; Fiers, F.; Vincx, M..
During an intensive meiofauna sampling campaign in intertidal seagrass beds along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico), 131 specimens of Lightiella incisa (Cephalocarida, Crustacea) were recovered from the sediment. Two-thirds of the specimens were adults, one-third were pre-adults. This collection is the first record of this minute primitive crustacean in the western part of the Caribbean Sea, and extends the known range 3000 km from the type locality of Hastings Bay, Barbados. A detailed sampling protocol and environmental data made it possible to study the microhabitat preferences of this species, and perhaps for cephalocarids in general for the first time. The vertical distribution of L. incisa in...

Ecologie van harpacticoide copepoden: structurele biodiversiteit in tropische zeegrasvelden = Ecology of harpacticoid copepods: structural biodiversity in tropical seagrass beds OMA
De Troch, M..
The term 'biodiversity' is the simple contraction of 'biological diversity', and at first sight the concept is simple too: biodiversity is the total sum of all biotic variation from genes to ecosystems (Purvis & Hector, 2000). The challenge comes in measuring such a broad concept in ways that are useful. The measurement of diversity of one place, group or time is in itself more or less useless. But comparable measurements of diversity from multiple places, groups or times can help us to understand how diversity arose and how we can maintain it. Marine biodiversity is higher in benthic rather than in pelagic systems, and in coasts rather than in open ocean since there is a greater range of habitats near the coast. In addition, losses of marine...

Two new species of Mesochra Boeck, 1865 (Copepoda: Harpacticoida) from a coastal lagoon in Sinaloa State, Mexico OMA
Gomez Noguera, S.E.; Fiers, F..
Two new species of the genus Mesochra, M. pacifica n. sp. andM. pseudoparva n. sp. are described from Ensenada del Pabellón Lagoon (southeastern Gulf of California, Mexico). Both species are considered as most closely related to M. parva Thomson 1946, although they share some features with M. sewelli Lang 1948. A particular forked structure on the male P3 endopodite of M. pseudoparva n. sp. was found and the homology of this structure is discussed. An updated key to the species in the genus is provided.

Manejo de la Fertilidad del Suelo en la Producción Orgánica Organic Eprints
Garibay, Salvador V..

Certified with trust and solidarity? Attitude, benefits and challenges of organic farmers in Participatory Guarantee Systems, Cacahoatán, Mexico Organic Eprints
Hochreiter, Claudia.
Organic marketing offers an important income source for many Mexican farmers. However, common certification by external agencies results in high costs and bureaucracy, thus limiting farmers’ access to markets. Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGSs) offer alternatives for farmer associations, organising certification as a process of social learning with broad stakeholder integration. The aim of my thesis is to give a socioeconomic profile of the farmers in PGSs and reveal their motives, agro-ecological attitudes, benefits from and challenges of collective organic certification with a particular emphasis on social aspects. For a comparison of a) participatory and b) externally certified farmers I realised interviews and focus group discussions in two groups...

Co-operative or coyote? Producers’ choice between intermediary purchasers and Fairtrade and organic co-operatives in Chiapas Organic Eprints
Milford, Anna Birgitte.
Coffee producers in many parts of the world have the option of either becoming a member of and selling their coffee to a Fairtrade and organic co-operative, or selling it to a ‘‘coyote’’, the Central American nickname for intermediary purchaser. This study investigates why different producers make different choices, looking at both material and immaterial costs and benefits of the two choices. A qualitative study from Chiapas (Mexico) finds that a main reason for not choosing the co-operatives is the production requirements that follow organic certification. A survey on production costs confirms that members of an organic co-operative have more work hours than nonmembers in the same area. A probit analysis indicates that both coffee plot size and number of...

Organics Olympiad 2016: Global Indices of Leadership in Organic Agriculture Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Organic production (including agriculture, wild culture, forestry and aquaculture) is a worldwide phenomenon that is practiced in at least 172 countries. The Organics Olympiad presents 14 indices of global organics leadership, each at three levels (Gold, Silver and Bronze). The Organics Olympiad of 2016 yields 29 countries as global organics leaders, and confirms that organics leadership is diversely distributed across countries, large and small, rich and poor, developed and less so, and cuts across linguistic, ethnic and cultural boundaries. Australia continues to lead the world in organic agriculture hectares. Australia also leads in the increase of organic hectares over the past four years (since the Organics Olympiad 2012) and in the number of WWOOF...

Greenhouse Tomatoes Change the Dynamics of the North American Fresh Tomato Industry AgEcon
Cook, Roberta L.; Calvin, Linda.
The rapid growth of the North American greenhouse tomato industry has changed the longstanding dynamics of the fresh tomato industry. During the 1990s, Canada emerged as the largest North American producer of greenhouse tomatoes, a prominence it never attained in the fresh field tomato industry. The United States and Mexico have also become important greenhouse tomato producers, consistent with their long dominance in North American fresh field tomato production. Greenhouse tomatoes have changed the look of U.S. retail tomato sales, where they now account for 37 percent of the quantity sold of fresh tomatoes. While the primary U.S. fresh field tomato product, the mature green tomato, long dominated retail sales, its share has decreased significantly due to...

Debt, Trade, and Payments Issues of Developing Countries and U.S.-Mexican Economic Interdependencies AgEcon
Debt problems of developing countries seriously constrain their economic and social development as well as the prospects and pace of economic recovery in the developed countries. Debt and trade problems of Mexico are particularly important for the U.S. agricultural economy because of the size and importance of U.S.-Mexican agricultural trade. The importance of Mexico as a U.S. trading partner lends importance to research on Mexican supply, demand, and trade of agricultural commodities and on macroeconomic and monetary policies affecting Mexico's demand and capacity to import. The ninth meeting of the Consortium on Trade Research focused on the debt, trade, and payments problems of developing countries and on U.S.-Mexican economic relationships.

Disaggregating Mexican Migrant Networks: The Parts are Greater Than the Whole AgEcon
Winters, Paul C.; Stecklov, Guy; Davis, Benjamin.
In this paper, we explore the role of social networks in the migration decision focusing on the distinct influence networks have on domestic and international migration. The analysis focuses particular attention on the composition of migrant networks in order to improve our understanding of how network composition influences the migration decision. Using data from rural Mexico, we consider migration in a multiple choice context allowing for the possibility that individuals can migrate within Mexico for agricultural and non-agricultural employment as well as to the United States. Our principle result is that the parts are greater than the whole; using disaggregated measures of social networks highlights the complexity of network effects on migration...

Farmers' Subjective Valuation of Subsistence Crops: The Case of Traditional Maize in Mexico AgEcon
Arslan, Aslihan; Taylor, J. Edward.
Shadow prices guide farmers' resource allocations, but for subsistence farmers growing traditional crops, shadow prices may bear little relationship with market prices. We econometrically estimate shadow prices of maize using data from a nationally representative survey of rural households in Mexico. Shadow prices are significantly higher than the market price for traditional but not improved maize varieties. They are particularly high in the indigenous areas of southern and southeastern Mexico, indicating large de facto incentives to maintain traditional maize there.
