The summer mortality patterns was studied in 1996 on the Ronce-les-Bains oyster bank (175 ha), located on the southern part of the Bay Marennes-Oleron (Atlantic coastline). Studies on growth, sexual maturation, survival rates and environmental variables were compared at fifteen experimental sites (on- and off-bottom culture). After 7 months, cumulative mortality reached 8-19 and 23-33% for off-bottom and on-bottom culture, respectively which is significantly higher for the latter case. A seasonal mortality trend was noted, with a significant increase related to air temperature greater than 20 degrees C and with a significant pre-spawning glycogen catabolism. Based on soft tissue flesh growth results from both types of culture, several empirical models were... |

Summer seed mortality (SSM) has occurred yearly in Tomales Bay, California since 1993. SSM has resulted in up to 90% cumulative losses, and has been associated with extreme temperature, phytoplankton blooms, and an oyster herpesvirus. In this study, three stocks of Pacific oysters were planted at three sites in California (Inner Tomales Bay, Outer Tomales Bay, and Bodega Harbor) in October of 2000 (Fall) and April of 2001 (Spring) and monitored for mortality, growth, and health status. In April of 2001, a similar study was conducted in Totten Inlet, WA state using cohorts of oysters planted in California; animals were monitored for mortality and growth. Temperature data were collected at all sites; phytoplankton abundance data were collected at the... |

Since 2014, France’s blue mussel industry has been facing heavy mortality outbreaks (90-100%) affecting both juveniles and adults. This report presents evidence of heavy genomic abnormalities associated with mortality outbreaks in blue mussels, Mytilus edulis-galloprovincialis, from the Atlantic coast of France. In this study, ploidy characteristics of hemic cells were investigated using Flow CytoMetry (FCM), revealing an unusual, broad continuum of ploidy distribution from hypodiploidy to tetraploidy. FCM was additionally used to evaluate, at individual and populations levels, different thresholds of genomic abnormality (GA%) using the percentage of non-diploid nuclei. Individual mussels were considered to be abnormal when more than 10% of hemocytes in... |

Crassostrea gigas is increasingly being cultured in a great number of countries from animaIs originally introduced from Japan, and is one of the most exploited bivalve species in the EU (FAO, 1989). Although no serious pathogen was detected previously in Japanese oysters in Europe, mortalities have been observed since the introduction of this bivalve species into the EU. Thus, oyster cultivation may be endangered by the occurrence of epizootics, especially virus diseases, which are considered one of the maj or risks to production. Indeed, mortalities have been described among different species of ostreids and are associated with the presence of viruses belonging to various families. The first description of a virus was reported in adult Eastern oyters,... |

Ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1 μvar) infection has caused significant mortalities in juvenile oysters (Crassostrea gigas). In contrast to the practices of other animal production industries, sick and dead oysters are not separated from live ones and are left to decay in the surrounding environment, with unknown consequences on fluxes of dissolved materials. A laboratory approach was used in this study to test the influence of oyster mortality episode on dissolved inorganic fluxes at the oyster interface, dissociating (i) the effect of viral infection on metabolism of juvenile oysters and (ii) the effect of flesh decomposition on oxygen consumption and nutrient releases at the individual scale. Nine batches of juvenile oysters (Individual Total wet weight... |

The network named REMONOR (REseau MOllusqueNORmandie) aims to assess mortality, growth and tissue quality of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, cultivated in Normandy over an annual cycle. This local network relies on the same material and methods as the national one named REMORA (REseau Mollusques Ressources Aquacoles). The study was carried out in 17 sites, which were distributed in the four basins where oyster rearing occurs in Normandy (West and East coast of Cotentin, Baie des Veys and Meuvaines). In 2003, a new site was added, which was located in the area of Ver-Sur-Mer (Calvados). The results obtained in 2003 showed a low annual mortality for adults (8%) as well as for juveniles (10%). Growth was also low for the two age classes of oyster... |

Mortality associated with ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) has significantly impacted Crassostrea gigas farmers all around the world. Although selective breeding programs to improve OsHV-1 resistance can significantly reduce the mortality rate below 20%, husbandry practices have also been one way to limit or decrease mortality. The main objectives of this study were to describe the influence of two husbandry practices on OsHV-1-induced mortality in C. gigas spat and how different family lines respond to husbandry practices to gain a better understanding of the potential benefits of breeding management as a tool to adapt to improved practices. The first analysis investigated the importance of the size of C. gigas when challenged with OsHV-1 for the first... |

Summer mortalities of young oysters have been studied in 1999 through the monitoring of a unique oyster batch distributed among 3 sites located from upstream of an estuary (Fort-Espagnol, Auray river) to downstream (Kerpenhir, Auray river) up to open bay (Men er Roué, Bay of Quiberon). Mortality and growth have been monitered in parallel with vitality indices, so as to try or identify periods of weakness of oysters. The spat grew from a mean weight of 3 g, in the beginning of May to around 35 g in November, without sharp differences between sites. The summer mortalities remained moderate (10 %) in the 2 most marine stations, whereas a light peak of mortality (15 %) was recorded in July in the most continental station. Any of the physico-chemical parameters... |

This report presents the main results for 2002 of the eight points in the Lagune de Thau, in accordance with the monitoring network REMORA: 3 national points and 5 regional added by the «Laboratoire Conchylicole de Méditerranée». Only adults batch is observed in the Mediterranean sea. This year the mortality ratio is low (< 5 %), without significant differences between areas. Like for the whole national network, the average individual weight are less than previous years in Bouzigues and Marseillan area ; in opposite Mèze area has better results. Bouzigues area presents the best productivity rate (3.1) and the worst in the middle of the zone. The AFNOR index, calculed in December, allows to classify the oysters like "spéciales". The best values are... |

The black-lip pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera lives and reproduces with high performance in most of Tuamotu Lagoons. Technics to collect spats, to culture juveniles and to operate oysters were quickly found and applicated. Nevertheless, the sudden rise of this activity has been correlated with an anarchic development. For instance, large occupation of areas in the lagoons, cultivation of numerous oysters in confined areas, lack of knowledge on the basis culture technics in many farms. In 1985, mass mortalities have appeared in some lagoons and 50 to 80% of cultured stock died. Some investigations have been done but no explanation was found. In 1988, the mortalities are still very high. An analysis of cooperative production results from 1979 to 1988... |

Mussel samples have been placed in plastic-mesh bags hung on wood poles (« bouchots »), at 4 locations of a mussel culture area in the bay of Vilaine (South Brittany, France). They have been monitored for one year, from February 2000 to February 2001. The recorded growth have been rather fast (plus 1.2 g per month between April and September), and mortalities moderate (between 15% to 25%), with better results in southern stations, further from the estuary. Among the physico-chemical parameters recorded, the most striking were very low salinities (below 10 g/l) recorded for days, after heavy rains. They provoqued a valve closure of mussels (recorded by a « valvometer »). Some physiological indicators being tested (muscle force and hermeticity) seemed to... |

Japanese cupped oysters suffer summer mortality in many culture sites along the French Atlantic coast. To ascertain whether mortality might be associated with morphological features of the shells, we estimated fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of hatchery/nursery-produced oysters kept in culture bags in the intertidal. FA is defined as random variations from a perfect symmetry plane (bilateral or radial) in some morphological trait. FA increases with disruption of homeostasy during ontogeny and has both genetic and environmental determinants. We found significant differences in FA between dead and live oysters in two of our three study groups. Therefore, lack of developmental stability may be involved in the summer mortality syndrome of oysters. We also found... |

The monitoring network IFREMER /REMORA is assessing, on a yearly basis, mortality, growth and quality criteria of two oyster batches ("juveniles" = one-year old ; and "adults" = two-years old), distributed among various stations of the main French oyster areas. Samplings are carried out in March, June, September and December. This network is a tool for trend estimations (geographic and chronological, on the national scale) ; it must not be considered as an accurate estimation of professional oyster ongrowings. With the exception of Spring mortalities due to poor initial quality of adult oysters and to difficulties in the counting of juveniles, the year 2000 appeared to be a year of low mortality. 2000 is a year of poor growth (61.5 g in average weight in... |

A study on mortalities, growth and fattening of the oyster Crassostrea gigas was carried out spring with the autumn 1987 in four sites of bay of Bourgneuf. Mortalities, more important in spring, prove to be higher in the sectors North compared to the Southern sectors of bay of Bourgneuf. The performances of growth are rather weak when they are compared with other French oyster sectors. They however present a better production in the cattle-breeding areas located at the South of bay. The spring phase is marked by the formation of glucidic reserves, at the moment of the reheating of water, which is quickly transformed, in the majority of the sites, in lipids of reserves of the ovocytes, during the gamétogenèse. The state of fattening of Crassostrea gigas... |

Progeny of Crassostrea virginica oysters, introduced into France in 1992, were reared during 1992 and 1993, to test their growth performances. These assays were performed to investigate the possible replacement of Crassostrea gigas with a non indigenous species, Crassostrea virginica. During the summer of 1993, sporadic mass mortalities (80-90%) occurred among young, Crassastrea virginica, oysters reared in the IFREMER nursery in La Tremblade (Charente Maritime). |

Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of farming sites, seeding date, age of oysters, ploidy level and rearing structures on mortality, pathogens and energetic reserves of oysters Crassostrea gigas. Mortality of oysters coincided with infections involving, primarily, the ostreid herpesvirus OsHV-1 and, secondarily, bacteria of the group Vibrio splendidus, when seawater temperature was between 17 and 24°C. Mortality started in early May and lasted until late September, with an interruption in July and August when seawater temperatures rose above 24°C. Mortality varied with farming site: oysters maintained in the open Mediterranean Sea showed no mortality and OsHV-1 was occasionally detected at a low level only, while oysters maintained in... |
