| The Integrated Global Observing Strategy Partnership (IGOS-P) established, in 1999, a thematic approach to the implementation of the IGOS. Recognising that other themes will emerge, the “Ocean Theme” was chosen to be the “pathfinder” in this approach and an Ocean Theme Team was assembled to formulate guidance. | The Southern African Data Centre for Oceanography (SADCO) is located in the CSIR in Stellenbosch, close to Cape Town, South Africa. It archives, extracts and manipulates multi disciplinary oceanographic data in a large area around the southern African subcontinent. The data centre makes use of the staff of the CSIR for all activities of the centre (management, data processing, database design and loading, IT and network support, and handling of requests). | The IOF is main Croatian institution responsible for oceanographic research of the Adriatic Sea. It was founded in 1930 as multidisciplinary oceanographic institute. Today, it consists of several laboratories: physical oceanography, chemical oceanography and sedimentology, biology, fishery, and aquaculture located in towns of Split and Dubrovnik. Oceanographic Information Centre (OIS) was founded as a technical unit in 1982 with main objective to co-ordinate management of oceanographic data collected by various laboratories. |

Its installations are in the Navy’s Oceanographic Institute (INOCAR), from which it depends. | During april 1995 hydrochemical research in a vertical column on the east side of the Galápagos Islands (Cruise T95/04/01) onboard of the INP R/V Tohallí indicated that concentrations of ammonium, nitrate, phosphate and chlorophyll-a were found stratified from the surface to deeper layers, on the other hand the maximum levels of nitrite and silicate were detected 70 m below the thermocline. | The Ocean Observations Panel for Climate and its predecessor examined the usefulness of surface salinity data in the context of climate change detection. They stated that "At high latitude, sea surface salinity is known to be critical for decadal and longer time scale variations associated with deep ocean over turning and the hydrological cycle. In the tropics, and in particular in the western Pacific, and Indonesian Seas, and in upwelling zones salinity is also believed to be important." They quote the benchmark sampling strategy to be one sample per 200 km square every 10 days and with an accuracy of 0.1 PSU.
