Leaf stripe resistance of spring barley cultivars Organic Eprints
Pinnschmidt, Hans O.; Nielsen, Bent J..
Results of six years of screening trials clearly indicate that effective resistance against barley leaf stripe is available, also in modern cultivars. Among the spring barley cultivars that are currently most widely grown in Denmark, Cabaret, Troon, Sebastian, Justina and Brazil appear most resistant, but only Brazil combines a favourable resistance performance (= low mean and standard deviation of environment-adjusted leaf stripe incidence) with a high number of observations (= years of testing). However, the cultivars appearing most resistant over the years are relatively old ones such as Vada, Alabama, Odin and particularly Scarlett, which has been resistant in all years in which it was tested. Amongst the new cultivars, Marigold, Native and SW Immer...

Assessment of disease in low-input cereal cropping systems and variety trials Organic Eprints
Hovmøller, M.S.; Pinnschmidt, H.; Willas, J.; Østergård, H..
Disease assessment is the basis for describing disease resistance characteristics of commercial varieties in national variety lists for all crops where disease is considered a problem. It is well known that ‘disease’ in a specific situation depends on a whole range of interacting hosts, pathogens and environmental conditions. However, the biological complexity conflicts with the wish to express disease resistance characteristics of a variety as a single score per disease. This problem will be illustrated by basic dynamics of growth and senescence of both host and pathogen over time. Disease expressed in terms of absolute diseased leaf area, disease relative to total leaf area or green leaf area will be discussed in general. Two particular problems in...

Varieties of Field Vegetables and Potatoes for Organic Production and Marketing (OFO142) Organic Eprints
NIAB,.
Varities of six vegetable crops and potatoes were evaluated in organic situations grown in replicated field trials on UKROFS organic sites. In most cases the results differed from those which would have been obtained in conventional trials as there was no chemical protection against pests and diseases and lower levels of available nutrients. Organic seed was used were available and a comparison made of the performance of this against conventional undressed seed.

Reduction of spore spread of common bunt (Tilletia tritici) via combining equipment Organic Eprints
Kristensen, Lars; Borgen, Anders.
The disease common bunt (Tilletia tritici syn. T.caries) has become a more frequent problem in Europe during the last 15 year. In organic farming, common bunt causes serious problems for seed producers, and many seed lots are discarded due to contamination with Tilletia tritici. Due to the biology of Tilletia tritici, with spores loosely attached to the surface of the grain, there is a risk that spores can be disseminated via grain handling equipment, including combine harvesters. Preventive efforts should focus on the role of grain handling equipment, and how the fungus life cycle can be broken. We have investigated the dissemination of spores via the combiner after harvesting infected fields. We conducted six trials over three years, counting the number...

Approaches for field assessment of resistance to leaf pathogens in spring barley varieties Organic Eprints
Pinnschmidt, H.O.; Hovmøller, M.S.; Østergård, H..
The resistance of spring barley varieties to powdery mildew, leaf rust, leaf scald and net blotch was characterized by using results from inoculated small-plot nurseries and larger survey plots subject to natural infection. The experiments were conducted in different environments. Both trial types often yielded complementary results with respect to the ranking of varieties suggesting that a recommended variety characterization should include both naturally infected survey-type trials and nursery trials in which the most relevant pathogen isolates and/or isolate mixtures or populations are used for inoculation. Average and median values of the diseased leaf area of a variety were highly correlated with each other and with the genotype main effect determined...

Züchterische Verbesserung der sensorischen Qualität der Pastinake (Pastinaca sativa L.) im Praxisbetrieb Organic Eprints
Horneburg, Bernd; Bauer, Dieter; Bufler, Gebhard.
Parsnip (Pastinaca sativa L.) is one of the few cultivated plants domesticated in Europe. The crop is underutilised and the number of available varieties is small in Central Europe. On-farm management of genetic resources can be an important means to increase infraspecific diversity, and to improve the quality of crops. In the present experiment quality-improvement by progeny selection on-farm was investigated. In a first step parsnips were selected for organoleptic quality by a technique that allows to harvest seeds from the plant tested. In a second step, progenies of positive- and negative-selected plants were compared with the original population. The experiment was carried out with the varieties Aromata (2006) and White King (2008) in...

An ancient compound rediscovered: perspectives of aphid control in organic hop growing by the use of quassia products Organic Eprints
Weihrauch, Florian; Eckert, Markus; Engelhard, Bernhard.
In the first three decades of the 20th century, quassia extract was widely used in hop growing as a chemical agent to control Phorodon humuli and other insect pests. In the first years of the 21st century this compound was rediscovered by German organic hop growers. In nine efficacy trials conducted in five field seasons, quassia products proved to be effective control agents for P. humuli in organically grown aroma cultivars. As the best method of application a systemic variant was developed by painting a suspension of quassia extract to the bines. This method proved not only to be very effective but was also best from an environmental point of view as sprayed quassia extracts had side effects on non-target organisms. As an optimal systemic application...

Differences between spring wheat cultivars in susceptibility to Fusarium caused seedling blight Organic Eprints
Timmermans, Dr. B.G.H.; Osman, Ir. A.M..
Fusarium spp. present on spring wheat seeds can infect seedlings and cause reduced plant densities and higher wheat infestations. In the current project, variation between commercially available spring wheat cultivars in their tolerance to Fusarium seedling blight was investigated in a pot and a field trail. Additionally, initial growth rates of cultivars were measured to investigate possible relations with tolerance. Preliminary analysis shows presence of tolerance differences between the spring wheat cultivars in the pot and field experiment. This difference was relatively robust (experiment x cultivar interaction was not significant). Preliminary analysis also showed a relation between tolerance and initial growth rates of cultivars in the field...

The need for a supply of high quality organic vegetable seeds Organic Eprints
Groot, S.P.C.; Jalink, H.; Köhl, J.; Langerak, C.J.; Michta, A.; Werner, S.; van der Wolf, J.M.; van den Bulk, R.W..
Production of high quality organic vegetable seeds encounters several challenges. Research is performed to support seed companies in producing vigorous and healthy organic vegetable seeds. Examples are provided with respect to research on seed vigour, determining critical control points to avoid disease transmission to the seeds, seed treatments with natu-ral compounds, new seed sorting techniques and enhancement of the natural plant defence. It is noticed that the restrictions in EU regulation 2092/91 on organic production are at present blocking the use of promising natural and sustainable components for seed treatments.

Effect of seed treatment with milk powder and mustard flour in control of common bunt (Tilletia tritici) in wheat and stem smut (Urocystis occulta) in rye Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders; Kristensen, Lars.
In field trials mustard flour was able to control seed borne infection by common bunt (Tilletia tritici) in wheat without decreasing the germination vigour of the treated seeds. Full control of common bunt by coating the seeds with milk powder could only be achieved at doses which reduced germination vigour of the seeds. Mustard flour can be recommended as a seed treatment in organic agriculture while a treatment based on milk powder should be developed in combination with biological control. Both milk powder and mustard flour can be used to control stem smut in rye (Urocystis occulta).
