Results of six years of screening trials clearly indicate that effective resistance against barley leaf stripe is available, also in modern cultivars. Among the spring barley cultivars that are currently most widely grown in Denmark, Cabaret, Troon, Sebastian, Justina and Brazil appear most resistant, but only Brazil combines a favourable resistance performance (= low mean and standard deviation of environment-adjusted leaf stripe incidence) with a high number of observations (= years of testing). However, the cultivars appearing most resistant over the years are relatively old ones such as Vada, Alabama, Odin and particularly Scarlett, which has been resistant in all years in which it was tested. Amongst the new cultivars, Marigold, Native and SW Immer... |

Disease assessment is the basis for describing disease resistance characteristics of commercial varieties in national variety lists for all crops where disease is considered a problem. It is well known that ‘disease’ in a specific situation depends on a whole range of interacting hosts, pathogens and environmental conditions. However, the biological complexity conflicts with the wish to express disease resistance characteristics of a variety as a single score per disease. This problem will be illustrated by basic dynamics of growth and senescence of both host and pathogen over time. Disease expressed in terms of absolute diseased leaf area, disease relative to total leaf area or green leaf area will be discussed in general. Two particular problems in... |

The paper gives an overview over the prospects and risks of the application of bioherbicides in Organic Farming and wants to support the general acceptance by the EEC Council Regulation on Organic Production of Agricultural Products. Another problem of current importance is the maintenance of seed health. Several methods of seed treatments and their practical use are described (hot water, hot air, microwave steam, radio-frequency, low energy electrons, micro-organisms and natural substances). |

Description The objective of this research project is to collate and disseminate information relating to the performance of varieties under organic conditions and to facilitate the use of a knowledge transfer centre by producers and seed suppliers. The website will list all vegetable and cereal varieties available as organic seed and include performance data in organic and non-organic conditions where this is available. The research will collate and disseminate published data on variety performance under UK conditions as well as making the latest variety trials data carried out in the UK rapidly and easilly available for organic producers. It will also group varieties that have similar performance characteristics together for key crops. This will... |

The disease common bunt (Tilletia tritici syn. T.caries) has become a more frequent problem in Europe during the last 15 year. In organic farming, common bunt causes serious problems for seed producers, and many seed lots are discarded due to contamination with Tilletia tritici. Due to the biology of Tilletia tritici, with spores loosely attached to the surface of the grain, there is a risk that spores can be disseminated via grain handling equipment, including combine harvesters. Preventive efforts should focus on the role of grain handling equipment, and how the fungus life cycle can be broken. We have investigated the dissemination of spores via the combiner after harvesting infected fields. We conducted six trials over three years, counting the number... |

The resistance of spring barley varieties to powdery mildew, leaf rust, leaf scald and net blotch was characterized by using results from inoculated small-plot nurseries and larger survey plots subject to natural infection. The experiments were conducted in different environments. Both trial types often yielded complementary results with respect to the ranking of varieties suggesting that a recommended variety characterization should include both naturally infected survey-type trials and nursery trials in which the most relevant pathogen isolates and/or isolate mixtures or populations are used for inoculation. Average and median values of the diseased leaf area of a variety were highly correlated with each other and with the genotype main effect determined... |

Parsnip (Pastinaca sativa L.) is one of the few cultivated plants domesticated in Europe. The crop is underutilised and the number of available varieties is small in Central Europe. On-farm management of genetic resources can be an important means to increase infraspecific diversity, and to improve the quality of crops. In the present experiment quality-improvement by progeny selection on-farm was investigated. In a first step parsnips were selected for organoleptic quality by a technique that allows to harvest seeds from the plant tested. In a second step, progenies of positive- and negative-selected plants were compared with the original population. The experiment was carried out with the varieties Aromata (2006) and White King (2008) in... |

Fusarium spp. present on spring wheat seeds can infect seedlings and cause reduced plant densities and higher wheat infestations. In the current project, variation between commercially available spring wheat cultivars in their tolerance to Fusarium seedling blight was investigated in a pot and a field trail. Additionally, initial growth rates of cultivars were measured to investigate possible relations with tolerance. Preliminary analysis shows presence of tolerance differences between the spring wheat cultivars in the pot and field experiment. This difference was relatively robust (experiment x cultivar interaction was not significant). Preliminary analysis also showed a relation between tolerance and initial growth rates of cultivars in the field... |

Production of high quality organic vegetable seeds encounters several challenges. Research is performed to support seed companies in producing vigorous and healthy organic vegetable seeds. Examples are provided with respect to research on seed vigour, determining critical control points to avoid disease transmission to the seeds, seed treatments with natu-ral compounds, new seed sorting techniques and enhancement of the natural plant defence. It is noticed that the restrictions in EU regulation 2092/91 on organic production are at present blocking the use of promising natural and sustainable components for seed treatments. |
