Incidence of Salmonella in imported day-old ducklings. Brazil, 1998-2003 Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Ribeiro,SAM; Galleti,MCM; Orsi,MA; Ferrati,AR; Mendonça,AO; Doretto Júnior,L; Camillo,SCA; Reischak,D.
The occurrence of Salmonella in a samples of 40 imported day-old duckling flocks was assessed from 1998 to 2003 according to the guidelines of the Brazilian National Poultry Health Program (Programa Nacional de Sanidade Avícola-PNSA). The pathogen was recovered from 26 flocks (65.0%). The most common serovars were S. Saintpaul and S. Kottbus. Up to four serovars were isolated from a single flock. Transportation box swabs (82.6%) and yolk sac pool (47.1%) showed the highest and the lowest frequency of Salmonella isolation, respectively. The high percentage of Salmonella isolation from imported day-old ducklings causes concern because of the zoonotic potential of this agent and its economical importance to commercial poultry breeding.

Comparative Evaluation of the Effects of Binzalkonium Chloride, Iodine, Gluteraldehyde and Hydrogen Peroxide Disinfectants against Avian Salmonellae Focusing on Genotypic Resistance Pattern of the Salmonellae Serotypes toward Benzalkonium Chloride Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Aksoy,A; El Kahlout,KEM; Yardimci,H.
ABSTRACT Using disinfectants in poultry houses is a common practice to ban the zoonotic pathogens like Salmonella. A major concern in using disinfectants is the emergence of bacteria strains that resist some disinfectants. This phenomenon is manifested in the resistance of some Salmonella serotypes against quaternary ammonium compounds. Such resistance is attributed to qacEΔ1 gene which may be possessed by some Salmonella serotypes. This work aimed to evaluate the resistance of Salmonella serotypes (S. Typhimurium, S. Infantis and S. Entiridis) against different disinfectants (benzalkonium chloride, iodine, gluteraldehyde and hydrogen peroxide). The effect of the disinfectants were evaluated by treatment of the bacteria with different concentrations...

Biffi,CP; Stefani,LM; Miletti,LC; Matiello,CA; Backes,RG; Almeida,JM; Neves,GB.
Isolates of Salmonella sp (104) from poultry samples were isolated and serotyped where eleven were identified as Salmonella Typhimurium (ST). ST isolates were phenotypically tested by disk diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Four genes related to enrofloxacin (GyrA, GyrB, ParC and ParE), two to gentamicin (AadA and AadB) and two to ceftiofur (BlaCMY-2 and AmpC) resistance were searched by PCR. Our results showed ST resistance to all three antibiotics tested (18.1% for ceftiofur, 45.4% for gentamicin, and 18.1% for enrofloxacin) according to the diffusion test. In the MIC test, the ST isolates showed higher levels of resistance (27.2% for ceftiofur, 54.5% for gentamicin, and 18.2% for enrofloxacin). Three resistance genes out of four...

Influence of Covering Reused Broiler Litter with Plastic Canvas on Litter Characteristics and Bacteriology and the Subsequent Immunity and Microbiology of Broilers Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Mesa,D; Lourenço,M; Souza,A; Bueno,A; Pereira,A; Sfeir,M; Santin,E.
ABSTRACT In broiler production, the litter is reused for consecutives flocks, and it is treated during down time between flocks to reduce its microbial load. Although covering the litter with a plastic canvas is a common litter treatment in the field, there is little scientific information available on its efficacy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of covering broiler litter with a plastic canvas for eight days on litter microbiological, physical, and chemical parameters, and on the intestinal microbiota and immunity of broilers. In the first trial, reused litter from a previous flock was distributed into three treatments, with six replicates each: L1 (negative control, litter free from Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) and Eimeria maxima (EM)...

Miniaturized most probable number for the enumeration of Salmonella sp in artificially contaminated chicken meat Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Colla,FL; Mion,L; Parizotto,L; Rodrigues,LB; Pilotto,F; Dickel,EL; Nascimento,VP do; Santos,LR dos.
Salmonella is traditionally identified by conventional microbiological tests, but the enumeration of this bacterium is not used on a routine basis. Methods such as the most probable number (MPN), which utilize an array of multiple tubes, are time-consuming and expensive, whereas miniaturized most probable number (mMPN) methods, which use microplates, can be adapted for the enumeration of bacteria, saving up time and materials. The aim of the present paper is to assess two mMPN methods for the enumeration of Salmonella sp in artificially-contaminated chicken meat samples. Microplates containing 24 wells (method A) and 96 wells (method B), both with peptone water as pre-enrichment medium and modified semi-solid Rappaport-Vassiliadis (MSRV) as selective...

Lee,HY; Biswas,D; Ahn,J.
ABSTRACT This study was designed to assess the role of bacteriophage P22 in the adhesion, invasion, intracellular survival of, and cellular immune response to Salmonella Typhimurium in intestinal epithelial INT-407 and chicken macrophage-like HD11 cells. The ability of S. Typhimurium to adhere, invade, and survive to INT-407 and HD11cells was evaluated under Salmonella infection alone (control), phage treatment followed by Salmonella infection (PS), Salmonella infection followed by phage treatment (SP), and a combination treatment with Salmonella and phage (S+P). The number of S. Typhimurium associated on INT-407 cells was reduced from 4.2 to 2.7 log cfu/cm2 by phage treatment (SP). The number of intracellular S. Typhimurium within INT-407 cells was...

Effect of Infectious Bursal Disease (Ibd) Vaccines on Infection of Salmonella Heidelberg in Broiler Chickens Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Marín-Gómez,SY; Martins,NRS; Fernando,FS; Coelho,HLG; Freitas Neto,OC.
ABSTRACT Salmonella Heidelberg (SH) has represented a great concern to the Brazilian poultry industry in the last years. It is known that immunosuppression in poultry is a contributing factor to increase Salmonella faecal shedding and to disturb control programmes. Not only infectious bursal disease (IBD) virus but also some live vaccines have been reported to induce immunosuppression. In the present study we assessed the effects of two live vaccines against IBD on SH-infected broiler chicks. At 7 days of age, birds of three groups (vaccinated with recombinant HVT-IBD vector, with immune complex-IBD vaccine and unvaccinated) were orally challenged with 1 x 108 CFU of SH. A group of hatchmates remained unvaccinated/unchallenged to serve as negative...

Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamase Production and Biofilm Formation in Salmonella Serovars Resistant to Antimicrobial Agents Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Mandelli,JZA; Ehrhardt,A; Manto,L; Borges,KA; Furian,TQ; Weber,B; Rodrigues,LB; Santos,LR.
ABSTRACT Antimicrobial resistance is a serious public health problem and Salmonella spp. is highly resistant to antimicrobial agents. Biofilms are important in the food industry due to their formation on products, utensils, and surfaces and the difficulty in their removal. The objective of this study was to assess extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production, antimicrobial resistance, and biofilm production of Salmonella isolated from poultry slaughterhouses. Antimicrobial susceptibility was assessed by the disk diffusion assay and ESBL by double diffusion disk assay using the beta-lactamase inhibitor (amoxicillin+clavulanate). The antimicrobials tested were: ampicillin, amoxicillin+clavulanate, aztreonam, ceftazidime, cefotaxime, chloramphenicol,...

In vitro characterization and in vivo properties of Salmonellae lytic bacteriophages isolated from free-range layers Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Fiorentin,L; Vieira,ND; Barioni Júnior,W; Barros,S.
Occurrence of food poisoning related to Salmonella-contaminated eggs and chicken meat has been frequent in humans. Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) and Salmonella Typhimurium (ST) are included among the most important paratyphoid salmonellae associated with chicken meat and eggs. Elimination of Salmonella at the pre-harvest stage can play a significant role in preventing the introduction of this pathogen into the food chain and consequently in the reduction of food poisoning in humans. Bactericidal bacteriophages may provide a natural, nontoxic, feasible and non-expensive component of the multi-factorial approach for a pre-harvest control of Salmonella in poultry. Five bacteriophages lytic for SE PT4 and ST were obtained from 107 samples of feces of free-range...
