The objective of this work was to evaluate the protective effect of different forms of insecticide application on the transmission of yellow dwarf disease in barley cultivars, as well as to determine the production costs and the net profit of these managements. The experiments were carried out during 2011 and 2012 growing seasons, using the following managements at main plots: T1, seed treatment with insecticide (ST) + insecticide on shoots at 15-day interval; T2, just ST; T3, insecticide applied on shoots, when aphid control level (CL) was reached; T4, without insecticide; and T5, ST + insecticide on shoots when CL was reached. Different barley cultivars - BRS Cauê, BRS Brau and MN 6021 - were arranged in the subplots. Insecticides lambda cyhalothrin... |

The fungus Alternaria alternata was quantified in 75 wheat seed samples collected from three different regions of southern Brazil for Cropping and Use Value (CUV) I, II and III. Fungal presence was evaluated in two hundred disinfested seeds per sample before sowing in a potato-dextrose-agar medium + antibiotic (PDA+A). Fungus survival was evaluated every 45 days for 180 days for three seed batches from six wheat cultivars stored in propylene bags in a storehouse, with air temperature varying between 18 to 22 °C and relative air humidity around 60%. The efficacy of carboxin+thiram, difenoconazol, thiram, triadimenol, triticonazol and triticonazol + iprodione fungicides to control A. alternata was determined. A. alternata was detected in all the samples with... |

ABSTRACT The physiological potential of seeds is one of the main factors that should be considered at the planting of a crop. This study aimed to evaluate the exogenous application of biostimulant in zucchini, cv. Caserta Italiana, under salt stress conditions. For this, the experiment was divided into two parts. The first one was carried out in the laboratory, using a completely randomized experimental design, in a 5 x 3 factorial scheme (biostimulant doses and seed soaking times), with four replicates of 25 seeds. The second one was carried out in a greenhouse, in a completely randomized experimental design, in a 2 x 6 factorial scheme with four replicates, corresponding to two levels of irrigation water salinity (0.5 and 5.0 dS m-1) and six forms of... |

Significant advances have been made in our knowledge of forage seed physiology, technology, and stand establishment practices; however, stand establishment continues to be one of the most common production problems affecting forage crops in the USA. There is a need for research on stand establishment of forage crops under abiotic and biotic stress. Although the forage seed industry produces and markets seed of high quality, new methods of assessing seed vigor are needed and their use should be expanded in the industry to enable matching seed lot performance to specific environmental conditions where performance can be maximized. Seed treatment and seed coating are used in the forage seed industry, and studies have shown they are of benefit in some... |

The objective of this research was to determine the deterioration rate of BRS 208 and CD 104 wheat cultivar seeds, treated with fungicides, by applying the viability equation. Seeds were stored in conventional warehouses in Mauá da Serra and Londrina, in the State of Paraná, Brazil. Four seed lots were divided into four replications, half being treated with Carboxin + Thiran and the other half taken as controls, without treatment, and these were stored for 300 days. The germination data were transformed into probit, and a straight line was adjusted between 0 and 30 days. The treated seed lot of cv. BRS 208 stored in Londrina gave seed deterioration rates varying from 0.8.10-3 to 1.3.10-3, not differing from the values given for the similar lot stored in... |

A avaliação qualitativa e... |

Seed treatment is a low-cost and efficacious method to deliver a diversity of compounds to field crops. This study evaluated the uptake of seed-applied Cu by maize and the effect on seed vigor. The treatments were composed of a control (untreated seeds) and five dosages of Cu: 0.11, 0.22, 0.44, 0.88 and 1.76 mg Cu seed–1, applied as cuprous oxide and copper oxychloride formulations. Seedling emergence and the speed of seedling emergence were determined in three periods: 1, 60 and 120 days after Cu application. Evaluations of root and shoot dry mass, Cu tissue concentration and efficiencies of Cu uptake and incorporation were conducted with two-leaf stage maize plants. Seed-applied Cu reduces the speed of maize seedling emergence, while the final emergence... |

ABSTRACT Seed treatment is an interesting alternative to deliver micronutrients to field crops. The aim of this study was to investigate the uptake of Cu and Zn by maize seedlings, with the application of the water-insoluble sources copper carbonate and zinc oxide as seed treatment. Treatments were composed of a control (untreated seeds), five doses of copper (0.14, 0.28, 0.56, 1.12 and 2.24 mg Cu∙seed–1) and zinc (0.55, 1.10, 2.20, 4.40 and 8.80 mg Zn∙seed–1) as well as five doses of copper and zinc combined (0.14, 0.28, 0.56, 1.12 and 2.24 mg Cu∙seed–1; 0.55, 1.10, 2.20, 4.40 and 8.80 mg Zn∙seed–1). Plants were cultivated in sand, under greenhouse conditions and, at the two-leaf stage (15 days), the root and shoot tissues dry mass and concentration of Cu... |

Nitrogen (N) is the most limiting nutrient for corn production. Thereby, the goal of the paper was to evaluate inoculation methods of Azospirillum brasilense in order to partially supply N required by the crop. The experiment was carried out in Guarapuava, PR, Brasil, in 2011/2012 growing season. Randomized blocks with factorial 3 inoculation methods (seed treatment, planting furrow and non-inoculated control) x 5 doses of nitrogen (0, 75, 150, 225 and 300kg ha-1) x 8 replications was used as the experimental design. Leaf are index, foliar nitrogen content, total chlorophyll, grains per ear and yield were evaluated. There was significant interaction between inoculation methods and nitrogen fertilization to leaf area index, but not for yield. Inoculation... |
