Molekulare mikrobielle Ökologie in landwirtschaftlich genutzten Bodensystemen Organic Eprints

Effects of past and current crop management on leaching losses, soil microbial community composition and activity Organic Eprints
Stark, Christine; Condron, Leo M.; Stewart, Alison; Di, Hong J.; O’Callaghan, Maureen.
A lysimeter experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of past and current management practices on soil microbial biomass, activity and community composition. Intact monolith lysimeters were taken from sites of the same soil type that had been under long-term organic and conventional crop management. They were subjected to the same crop rotation and managed according to best organic and conventional practices. Mineral N loss was determined in leachates and soil samples taken before the experiment and after 30 months were analysed for biological soil properties, including microbial diversity. Results indicated that leaching losses were similar for all treatments and that crop was the main influence on microbial biomass composition and size, while...

Effects of reduced tillage on soil organic carbon and microbial activity in a clayey soil Organic Eprints
Berner, Alfred; Fliessbach, Andreas; Nietlisbach, Bruno; Mäder, Paul.
In a long-term field trial recently launched (2002-2011), located in Frick (878 mm mean annual precipitation) near Basle, Switzerland, the effect of reduced tillage on soil fertility indicators and crop yield was studied in a heavy soil (45% clay) in a crop rotation under organic farming conditions. We present the results of soil analyses after three cropping years (2002-2005). Soil organic carbon (Corg) increased over that period by 7.4% (+1.5 g Corg kg-1 soil) in the 0-10 cm soil layer in the reduced tillage plots, while it remained constant in the ploughed plots. Soil microbial carbon (Cmic) and dehydrogenase activity (DHA, TTC-reduction) were 28% higher in reduced-tillage plots in this soil layer. Biological soil quality as calculated by Cmic to Corg...

Symbiotic nitrogen fixation and N-transfer in a grass-white clover mixture Organic Eprints
Vinther, Finn P..
Symbiotic N2 fixation (SNF) and transfer of fixed N from clover to grass in a grass-white clover mixture was measured during two years using 15N isotope dilution techniques. White clover derived from 87 to 99% of its N from the atmosphere. The total SNF ranged from 150 to 277 kg N ha-1 yr-1, which corresponded to 34-45 mg N fixed per gram of white clover dry weight. The transfer of fixed N from clover to grass corresponded to approximately 10 kg N ha-1 yr-1.

Generalist predators in organically and conventionally managed grass-clover fields: implications for conservation biological control Organic Eprints
Birkhofer , K; Fließbach , A; Wise , DH; Scheu , S.
Organically managed agroecosystems rely in part on biological control to prevent pest outbreaks. Generalist predators (Araneae, Carabidae and Staphylinidae) are a major component of the natural enemy community in agroecosystems. We assessed the seasonal dynamics of major generalist predator groups in conventionally and organically managed grass–clover fields that primarily differed by fertilisation strategy. We further established an experiment, manipulating the abundant wolf spider genus Pardosa, to identify the importance of these predators for herbivore suppression in the same system and growth period. Organic management significantly enhanced ground-active spider numbers early and late in the growing season, with potentially positive effects of plant...

Regenwurmbestand in Fruchtfolgen mit ökologischer Bewirtschaftung Organic Eprints
Walter, Roswitha; Daschner, Julia.

SOIL ENZYME ACTIVITIES RECOVERY AFTER ORGANIC TREATMENTS OF DEGRADED AREAS WITHIN VINEYARDS Organic Eprints
Lagomarsino, A.; Agnelli, A.E.; Fulchin, E.; Giffard, B..
Soil enzymes were used to assess the impact of different treatments applied in four farms, each one with three vineyards as replicates, on soil functionality. 8 enzymes related to C, N, S and P cycling were measured and functional diversity indexes were estimated. Three treatments were compared: compost, green manure and dry mulching with respect to degraded and non-degraded soil. The four vineyards showed different enzymatic patterns and response to treatments. Vineyards with the largest difference between degraded and non-degraded soil have benefited more largely from the treatments. In particular, dry mulching seemed to be more effective than green manure or compost, with the exception of San Disdagio. However, the effect the short term.

Plusieurs indicateurs...

Kinetics of microbial phosphorus uptake in cultivated soils Organic Eprints
Oehl, Fritz; Oberson, Astrid; Probst, Mirijam; Fliessbach, Andreas; Roth, Hans-Rudolf; Frossard, Emmanuel.
Knowledge about the role of microorganisms in P cycling at conditions of constant soil respiration rates and constant size of microbially bound P is lacking. To study the kinetics of microbial P uptake and cycling under such conditions, soils differing in biological activity were 33PO4 labelled by introducing a carrier-free tracer solution and incubated for 56 days. The 33PO4 incorporation into the fraction of microbial P releasable by chloroform treatment (Pchl) was assessed and the isotopic composition [=specific activity (SA); SA=33PO4/31PO4] of Pchl and soil solution P compared. Soils were taken from a 20-year-old field experiment including a nonfertilised control (NON), a minerally fertilised conventional (MIN) and two organic farming systems...

Effects of long term application of compost and poultry manure on soil quality of citrus orchards in Southern Italy. Organic Eprints
Canali, S.; Trinchera, A.; Intrigliolo, F.; Pompili, L.; Nisini, L.; Mocali, S.; Torrisi, B..
A six-year study was carried out in an organically managed orange orchard located in Sicily (Southern Italy) to assess the effect of compost and organic fertilizers utilisation on soil quality. Adopting a randomized-block experimental design with three replicates, four treatments were carried out. In treatments 1 and 2, two different composts (C1 from distillery by products and C2 from livestock wastes) were applied. The plots of treatment 3 were fertilized using dried poultry manure. The control treatment was fertilized with mineral/synthetic fertilizers. In order to verify the hypothesis that composts and organic fertilizers improve soil fertility, soil quality was evaluated by selecting dynamic soil parameters, as indicators linked to C and N cycles....

Farmyard manure, plant based organic fertilisers, inorganic fertiliser - which sustains soil organic matter best? Organic Eprints
Raupp, Joachim; Oltmanns, Meike.
Legume biomass or pulse meal may be considered as alternatives to farmyard manure (FYM) in organic farms with small scale animal husbandry or in stockless organic farms. From 1996 a field trial was established on a poor sandy soil to compare plant based organic fertilisers, FYM and inorganic fertilisers, each applied at 100 kg ha-1 N. Additionally, FYM was tested at a higher rate of 170 kg ha-1 N. Average soil organic carbon content in topsoil (Corg) of the last crop rotation period (2002-05) is compared to that in 1996. Corg remained at the same level of 0.78 % only with FYM, while plant based and inorganic fertiliser decreased carbon contents to 0.74 and 0.72 % Corg, respectively. The higher FYM rate increased Corg up to 0.84 %. Based on these results,...
