Association between MCP-1 -2518A>G polymorphism and asthma susceptibility: a meta-analysis BJMBR
Chen,Wenli; Cui,Jiewei; Xiang,Guoan; Zhang,Jianpeng; Gao,Hongmei.
The published data on the association between MCP-1 -2518A>G polymorphism and asthma susceptibility are inconclusive. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to estimate the impact of MCP-1 -2518A>G polymorphism on asthma susceptibility. PubMed, Web of Science, Wanfang, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases were used to identify eligible studies. The pooled odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to calculate the strength of association. Sensitivity analysis was performed to evaluate the influence of individual studies on the estimates of overall effect, and funnel plots and Egger's test were used to assess publication bias. Eight publications with 1562 asthma patients and 1574 controls were...

Association of MDR1 gene polymorphisms with the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma in the Chinese Han population BJMBR
Gao,Jian.
The multidrug resistance 1 gene (MDR1) is an important candidate gene for influencing susceptibility to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The objective of the present study was to evaluate the association ofMDR1 polymorphisms with the risk of HCC in the Chinese Han population. A total of 353 HCC patients and 335 healthy subjects were enrolled in the study. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP), created restriction site-PCR (CRS-PCR) and DNA sequencing methods were used to identify MDR1 gene polymorphisms. Two allelic variants (c.335T>C and c.3073A>C) were detected. The CC genotype of the c.335T>C polymorphism was associated with an increased risk of developing HCC compared to the TT genotype (OR = 2.161, 95%CI...

Different culture media applied to the study of Cryptococcus neoformans susceptibility to amphotericin B and fluconazole BJM
Alves,Sydney Hartz; Oliveira,Loiva T.; Goulart,Letícia S.; Linares,Carlos Eduardo B.; Griebeler,Josiane; Santurio,Janio M..
This study compared the performance of three culture media used for the determination of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of amphotericin B and fluconazole against 48 Cryptococcus neoformans strains. For amphotericin B the media employed were RPMI 1640 medium, as indicated by NCCLS as reference, Yeast Nitrogen Base (YNB) as proposed by Ghannoum et al. (YNB-1), Antibiotic medium 3 (AM3) indicated by others, and YNB as proposed by us (YNB-2). In YNB-1, amphotericin B showed broader MIC ranges, varying from 0.125 µg/ml to 1.0 µg/ml; in RPMI 1640 medium and YNB-2 the MICs were similar and in AM3 the MIC ranges were narrower. The same pattern was observed for MIC 90%. For fluconazole the media employed were RPMI 1640 and YNB-1. The MIC ranges were broader...

Genetic diversity and antifungal susceptibility testing of Trichosporon asahii isolated of Intensive Care Units patients BJM
Silva,Rosana Bellan de Oliveira; Fusco-Almeida,Ana Marisa; Matsumoto,Marcelo Teruyuki; Baeza,Lilian Cristiane; Benaducci,Tatiane; Mendes-Giannini,Maria José Soares.
Trichosporon asahii is an opportunistic pathogen, associated with a high mortality rate in immunocompromised patients. In this study, ten isolates, recovered from oral cavity and urine of patients in Intensive Care Units (ICU) over six months, were identified by classical and molecular methods, typed by RAPD and tested in vitro for susceptibility to fluconazole, itraconazole, 5-flucytosine and amphotericin B. A total agreement between the identification of Trichosporon sp by PCR based on sequences of the Internal Transcribed Spacer Regions (ITS) and on the sequences of small-subunit (SSU) ribosomal DNA (rDNA) was found. Randomly amplified of polymorphic DNA (RAPD), with primers P6 and M13, was used to determine the genomic profiles. The dendogram analysis...

Wolupeck,Hanna Lethycia; Morete,Crisley Aparecida; DallaSanta,Osmar Roberto; Luciano,Fernando Bittencourt; Madeira,Humberto Maciel França; Macedo,Renata Ernlund Freitas de.
ABSTRACT: The present study aimed to assess the antibiotic resistance in 54 indigenous Lactobacillus plantarum isolated from artisanal fermented sausages. The confirmation of the strain species was performed by multiplex-PCR assay. Antibiotic resistance was assessed by disk diffusion (DD) and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) methods. Of 54 L. plantarum, 44 strains were genotypically confirmed as L. plantarum and 3 as Lactobacillus pentosus. The highest resistance rates were to ampicillin and streptomycin. The highest susceptibility rates were shown to tetracycline, chloramphenicol and penicillin G. None of the strains showed multidrug resistance. Resistance rates by DD and MIC were not different (P>0.05) for ampicillin, chloramphenicol,...

Temporal profile of antimicrobial resistance exhibited by strains of Staphylococcus spp. isolated from cases of bovine mastitis for 20 years (1992-2011) Ciência Rural
Kowalski,Ananda Paula; Maboni,Grazieli; Espindola,Julia Pires; Foletto,Ariane; Bandeira Junior,Guerino; Pötter,Luciana; Botton,Sônia de Avila; Vargas,Agueda Castagna de.
Records of in vitro susceptibility tests performed between 1992 and 2011 were retrospectively reviewed in order to evaluate the dynamic profiles of possible changes in antimicrobial resistance of Staphylococcus spp. isolated from milk samples of cows with mastitis during two decades. The results of 2,430 isolates tested by disk diffusion technique for susceptibility to oxacillin, penicillin, ampicillin, cephalexin, norfloxacin, tetracycline, sulfazotrim, gentamicin, and neomycin were analysed. Comparisons were performed between the percentages of resistance to antimicrobials and their classes and also between the decades studied. Additionally, the possible tendency or changes in the behaviour of these pathogens against the major drugs used in the last two...

Bioassay method for toxicity studies of insecticide formulations to Tuta absoluta (meyrick, 1917) Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Galdino,Tarcísio Visintin da Silva; Picanço,Marcelo Coutinho; Morais,Elisangela Gomes Fidelis de; Silva,Nilson Rodrigues; Silva,Geverson Aelton Rezende da; Lopes,Mayara Cristina.
Chemical control is the main method for controlling the tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). Reported techniques for the evaluation of insecticide toxicity to the tomato leafminer are not in agreement with field conditions and do not allow us to verify whether doses used in the field are efficient for control. Thus, the objective of this work was to develop a bioassay methodology to study the toxicity of insecticide formulations to T. absoluta that represent field conditions for fast-acting insecticides (neurotoxics and inhibitors of respiration) and slow-acting insecticides (Bacillus thuringiensis and insect growth regulators). The leaf-dip method was the most efficient method for toxicity studies of insecticides...
