The present record of two species of brachyurous decapod crustaceans, Costacopluma grayi Feldmann & Portell, 2007 and Stevea martini sp. nov., from the lower Paleocene Pine Barren Member (Clayton Formation) in south-central Alabama, constitutes an extension of the range of the former and the sole occurrence of the latter. Previously, C. grayi was described from the middle Eocene Tallahatta Formation in Alabama. Stevea martini sp. nov. constitutes only the second species of the genus and the sole fossil occurrence known to date.

Taxonomy and evolutionary history of the neotropical fern genus Salpichlaena (Blechnaceae) Naturalis

Salpichlaena is a distinctive fern genus characterised by 2-pinnate climbing fronds with indeterminate growth. The number of species in the genus has been a matter of debate. Taxonomic studies are made difficult by within-frond variability in pinna morphology and size, and by herbarium material being incomplete. We systematically documented 62 morphological traits in 283 herbarium specimens and sequenced 52 Salpichlaena and 11 outgroup specimens. DNA sequences included plastid genes (rbcL, rpoC1 and rps4), intergenic spacers (rps4-trnS, trnHpsbA and trnG-trnR) and a nuclear gene (pgiC). Newly recognised lineages of perithecial ascomycetes: the new orders Conioscyphales and Pleurotheciales Naturalis

Phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequences from nuclear ribosomal and protein-coding loci support the placement of several perithecial ascomycetes and dematiaceous hyphomycetes from freshwater and terrestrial environments in two monophyletic clades closely related to the Savoryellales. One clade formed by five species of Conioscypha and a second clade containing several genera of uncertain taxonomic status centred on Pleurothecium, represent two distinct taxonomic groups at the ordinal systematic rank. Coniochaeta (Lecythophora), Collophora gen. nov. And Phaeomoniella species associated with wood necroses of Prunus trees Naturalis

Species of the genus Coniochaeta (anamorph: Lecythophora) are known as pathogens of woody hosts, but can also cause opportunistic human infections. Several fungi with conidial stages resembling Lecythophora were isolated from necrotic wood samples of Prunus trees in South Africa. In order to reveal their phylogenetic relationships, these fungi were studied on a morphological and molecular (5.8S nrDNA, ITS-1, ITS-2, GAPDH, EF-1α, 28S nrDNA, 18S nrDNA) basis. Some of the isolates were identified as Coniochaeta (Sordariomycetes), including C. velutina and two new species, C. africana and C. prunicola. Fossil brachiopods from the Pleistocene of the Antilles Naturalis

Pleistocene brachiopods are poorly known from the Antillean region, but are locally common in forereef deposits of Jamaica (lower Pleistocene Manchioneal Formation) and Barbados (Coral Rock). Of the four species known, two are new. Lacazella sp. cf. L. caribbeanensis Cooper, an encrusting thecideidean, is known from only three valves. Other species are terebratulides. Tichosina inconstanta sp. nov. is a large, ventribiconvex Tichosina species of elongate oval to tear-drop shaped outline, variably uniplicate with a pedicle foramen of moderate diameter. Stilbosporaceae resurrected: generic reclassification and speciation Naturalis

Following the abolishment of dual nomenclature, Stilbospora is recognised as having priority over Prosthecium. The type species of Stilbospora, S. macrosperma, is the correct name for P. ellipsosporum, the type species of Prosthecium. The closely related genus Stegonsporium is maintained as distinct from Stilbospora based on molecular phylogeny, morphology and host range. The leaf anatomical diversity of the genera Baccaurea Lour. (43 species), Distichirhops Haegens (3 species) and Nothobaccaurea Haegens (2 species) (Euphorbiaceae) is described. Two species of Aporosa and three species of Maesobotrya were examined for comparison. The following characters are important for the delimitation of species: hair types, the position of the glandular areas on the leaf margin, the hairiness and size of the glandular areas, the number of epidermal layers, the presence of (mucilage) idioblasts in the epidermis, the presence of palisade parenchyma above the vascular bundles, and the birefringence of the spongy parenchyma cell walls. A new short-rostrum odontocete (Mammalia: Cetacea) from the middle Miocene of the Eastern Netherlands Naturalis

An incomplete odontocete (Mammalia, Cetacea) skull from Middle Miocene Miste Bed (near Winterswijk in the eastern part of The Netherlands) is described as Vanbreenia trigonia, a new genus and species. The skull exhibits a short rostrum with only two maxillary teeth for each toothrow and with narrow and toothless apical portion exclusively formed by the premaxilla. Considering this last character, the specimen could belong to the Eurhinodelphinidae even if a certain attribution is not possible because of the incompleteness of the specimen. Vanbreenia n. gen. could represent a specialized adaptation to bottom suction feeding among the eurhinodelphinids.

Decapod crustaceans from the Neogene of the Caribbean: diversity, distribution and prospectus Naturalis

The Neogene decapod crustaceans are reviewed from Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao, Anguilla, Barbados, Carriacou, Costa Rica, Cuba, Florida, Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic), Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts, Tintamare Island, Trinidad and Venezuela. The most widely distributed taxa, both stratigraphically and geographically, are callianassids and Calappa (both with easily identifiable dactyli), and portunids. A re-appraisal of Harknessia (Diaporthales), and the introduction of Harknessiaceae fam. nov. Naturalis

Harknessiaceae is introduced as a new family in the ascomycete order Diaporthales to accommodate species of Harknessia with their Wuestneia-like teleomorphs. The family is distinguished by having pycnidial conidiomata with brown, furfuraceous margins, brown conidia with hyaline, tube-like basal appendages, longitudinal striations, and rhexolytic secession. Six species occurring on Eucalyptus are newly introduced, namely H. australiensis, H. ellipsoidea, H. pseudohawaiiensis, and H. ravenstreetina from Australia, H. kleinzeeina from South Africa, and H. viterboensis from Italy. Within the order Coronatae, six valid species remain known only by their polyp stage. The inability to relate them to any medusae genera of the group is a problem that remains to be solved in the order. With the examination of type specimens, we reassign the species Stephanoscyphistoma sibogae and S. striatus to the genera Atorella and Nausithoe respectively.

Sertularia vervoorti (Hydrozoa: Sertulariidae), an undescribed species of hydroid from Brazil Naturalis

An account is given of Sertularia vervoorti spec. nov., a small leptothecate species collected in coastal waters of southeastern Brazil. Specimens were found on brown algae, collected at depths of 15-20 m on the inner continental shelf off Espírito Santo state. This hydroid resembles Sertularia tumida Allman, 1877, S. linealis Warren, 1908, and S. longa Millard, 1958, but differs from these and other species of the genus in having an unusual bulge around the hydrothecal wall just distal to its insertion with the hydrocaulus. The colony form of S. vervoorti is more compact than in these species, and gonothecae are annulated rather than smooth as in S. linealis and S. longa.

The identity of Isocrassina, Laevastarte and Ashtarotha (Mollusca, Bivalvia, Astartidae) and their representatives from beaches and estuaries in The Netherlands and Pliocene strata in Belgium Naturalis

The identity of the subgenera Isocrassina Chavan, 1950, Laevastarte Hinsch, 1952, and Ashtarotha Dall, 1903, of the genus Astarte Sowerby, 1816 in the family Astartidae (Mollusca, Bivalvia) is discussed. Isocrassina has been widely used for Pliocene species in the North Sea Basin. Here it is demonstrated, that this is based on a redefinition of this subgenus, which excludes its type-species. As the North Sea species differ considerably from the type-species of Isocrassina in aspects of ornament and details of the hinge, it is concluded that they should be placed in the genus Laevastarte. Multi-locus phylogeny and taxonomy of Exserohilum Naturalis

Exserohilum includes a number of plant pathogenic, saprobic and clinically relevant fungi. Some of these species are of great importance in human activities, but the genus has never been revised in a phylogenetic framework. In this study, we revise Exserohilum based on available ex-type cultures from worldwide collections, observation of the holotypes and/or protologues, and additional isolates from diverse substrates and geographical origins. A crinoid crown from the Wenlock (Silurian) of Coalbrookdale, Shropshire, England Naturalis

The specific diversity of fossil crinoids from the Much Wenlock Limestone Formation at Dudley, Worcestershire, and in Shropshire differ by an order of magnitude. The latter are relatively depauperate and include only about six nominal species. Over 165 years ago, a specimen from Coalbrookdale, Shropshire, was identified as Cyathocrinites tuberculatus Miller (= the taxocrinid flexible Protaxocrinus tuberculatus (Miller)).
