Abstract In this paper some current data on organic farming are presented, based on the global survey on organic farming carried out 2007/2008 by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL, the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements IFOAM and Foundation Ecology & Agriculture (SOEL). Organic agriculture is developing rapidly and is now practiced in more than 130 countries of the world. Its share of agricultural land and farms continues to grow in many countries. According to the latest survey on global organic farming, 30.4 million hectares of agricultural land were managed organically at the end of 2006, constituting a growth of 1.8 million hectares compared to 2005. Additionally, according to this survey, there are more... |

This paper presents four new strategies for growing the organic agriculture sector. Globally there are 51 million hectares of certified organic agriculture land and a further 39 million hectares of wild culture land. For the past two decades organic agriculture has been growing at 11.9% per annum, thereby doubling the size of the sector every six years. Nevertheless, despite ten decades of advocacy for organics, only 1.1% of the world’s agricultural land is certified organic. From the outset, the strategy has been to advance the sector ‘one farm at a time’. This strategy has left the organics sector well short of the vision of the pioneers of organics who saw organic farming as a universal solution and a practice suited for all farmers and all agriculture.... |

We aimed to demonstrate the applicability of the entomo-vectoring approach, using as a case study the control of strawberry grey mould Botrytis cinerea, with the biocontrol fungus Gliocladium catenulatum, delivered to strawberry flowers by honey bees. The trial targets cultivations in the open field included four treatments: untreated control, chemical fungicide, entomovectored biocontrol, and chemical + biocontrol combined. The proportion of mouldy berries, and/or the marketable yield of healthy berries was recorded from each treatment, along with other parameters of local interest, and showed the best results in the treatment biocontrol+chemical control, and in the entomovectored biocontrol with respect to untreated control. |

The workshop was hosted by the European Commission in the Albert Borschette Conference Centre and took place between 9:30am and 5pm. During the workshop, FiBL scientists presented their results of FiBL flagship projects in regard to the contribution of organic agriculture to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These results were discussed first by a scientific panel and finally by a policy panel that put together the most relevant institutions in the field of sustainable development. Moderators • Frank Eyhorn, IFOAM – Organics International/Helvetas • Gurbir Bhullar, Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL), Switzerland Speakers • Urs Niggli, Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL), Switzerland • Beate Huber, Research... |

Organic agriculture is expanding worldwide, driven by consumer demand in North American and European markets, as well as its claimed potential to address resource conservation, food security, and farm income issues in developing countries. Organic systems often build soil organic matter, sequestering carbon to help mitigate greenhouse gases (Niggli et al., 2007; Raviv, 2010). Horticultural crops, especially fruits and vegetables, are being promoted as a critical part of a healthy diet that can help avoid problems such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Not surprisingly, consumers interested in healthy diets are often also attracted to organic foods (Hartman Group, 2006), and thus organic horticultural crops play a prominent role in consumer... |

The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements IFOAM, the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL, Frick, and Foundation Ecology and Agriculture SOEL have been providing global organic farming statistics annually since 2000. In the framework of the survey the current number of farms and organic agricultural land is collected, and since the 2006 edition land use details have been included. It is planned to expand the data collection to other variables. The data are published annually in the yearbook ‘The World of organic Agriculture’ of which both IFOAM and FiBL are the publishers. The 2008 edition is also published by Earthscan, London, as a hardcover book. Even though in many countries the data availability has improved... |

It is generally acknowledged that organic agriculture can contribute to socio-economic and ecologically sustainable development, especially in poorer countries. The market for organic products is growing and offers producers and exporters in the South opportunities to improve their incomes and living conditions. But what role does organic farming play in the poorer countries? Some current data are presented in this paper, based on the global survey on organic farming carried out annually by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL and the Foundation Ecology and Agriculture SOEL in co-operation with the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements IFOAM. Organic agriculture is developing rapidly and is now practiced in more than... |
