Abstract The first activities in organic viticulture date back to the 1950s when in Switzerland and Germany the first pioneers made great efforts to apply the basic principles of organic agriculture to viticulture. Since then, organic viticulture has developed dynamically in many countries. The international organic viticulture congresses evolved in Germany. The first congress of was held in 1985 in Geisenheim, organised by the German organic wine growers' association ECOVIN. The 6th congress was held in Basel, Switzerland, 2000 and for the first time in conjunction with an IFOAM Conference (IFOAM 2000). The ‘Organic wine and viticulture conference’ in the frame of the 16th IFOAM Organic World Congress in Modena, Italy, in June 2008 constitutes the 9th... |

Grain legumes benefit the farming system via symbiotic N2 fixation and subsequent residue incorporation contributing to soil fertility together with their effect as break-crop in cereal rich rotations. However, grain legumes are weak competitors towards weeds and consequently weeds constitute a major problem. Since the European policies for reducing the negative effects of agricultural plant production on the environment point to reductions in pesticide use (Mortensen et al., 2000), there is a requirement to further develop strategies to reduce weeds. Intercropping involves the simultaneous growing of several plant species in the same field and the cropping strategy is known to involve interspecific interferences increasing the use of plant growth... |

White lupin (Lupinus albus L.) is a protein plant adapted to the conditions of middle Europe. Presently, no variety with a sufficient resistance to anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum lupini, is available, and cultivation of white lupins in Germany has hardly any relevance. Making this crop available for cultivation again would expand the range of domestic protein crops and increase the biological diversity on agriculturally used fields. To make this crop worth cultivated again, it is essential to develop white lupin varieties with a high resistance to anthracnose. The breeding lines tested in this study proofed to have a higher level of resistance towards anthracnose and are thus yielding higher compared to currently available varieties. |

Background and objectives Two pathogens growing on the same leaf compete for the same resources, i.e. space and plant nutrients. This may lead to density dependent disease development. The pathogens may also influence each other directly such that the influence of one on the other is more complex than a simple function of the area of the other pathogen. Different interaction types are, for example, competition, mutualism and exploitation. The importance of such interactions for epidemics of simultaneously occurring pathogens has received little attention. The objective of this study is to investigate the simultaneous epidemic development of Rhynchosporium secalis (causing scald) and Drechslera teres (causing net blotch) on spring barley under field... |

Organic market strategies of many developing countries are mainly export oriented. On one hand, this is due to lack of local and regional market development. On the other hand, this is due to the fact that the organic market offers producers and trading companies in the South and East excellent export opportunities. How can developing countries develop local and regional markets? The promotion of organic markets ¬– both on local and international level – gets more and more attention in agricultural policies and in development cooperation. One big challenge is to support trade rules and favourable business conditions up to comprehensive national action plans in order to support the development of the organic market. Special focus needs the development of... |

Quality compost can have a positive effect on soil fertility and plant growth and health. This positive effect is not only observable in the laboratory, but also by growers. Phytopathological problems could be solved with the use of compost. Durable success can only be obtained if a quality management is resolutely followed. Further research is needed to optimize the quality management of compost production and utilization. For example, very little is known about the long-term effect of the different composts on soil fertility and disease receptivity. |

More and more organic farmers lift potatoes which are damaged by wireworms (Agriotes spec. and Hemicrepidus niger). A nationwide status quo-analysis was carried out by the Chamber of Agriculture of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2002 and 2003. The survey included an intensive literature research, a questionnaire with 26 questions, on-site assessments, and on-farm trials. It was noticed that a long period of grass-clover cultivation in the crop rotation had a negative effect on the quality of potato tubers. Peas and lupines seemed to be the better pre-crops for a good quality of tubers in contrast to field beans and red clover. An autumn fertilization with manure resulted in a low feeding damage on potatoes by wireworms. Many perennial weeds some like... |
