Lichens can affect buildings and monuments inducing a negative aesthetical impact as well as causing deterioration through mechanical and chemical processes. Given that cement mortars and concrete are the primary 20th century building materials worldwide, it is important to study lichens growing on this substrate. In a survey of different localities of Buenos Aires Province, 33 species growing on mortars and concrete were collected and identified utilizing morphological and chemical studies. Results showed that Staurothele frustulenta is a new record for Argentina, and Acarospora subcastanea is a new record for Buenos Aires Province. A high number of foliose lichens (15 species) were registered. Some species were previously only known on tree barks, but in... |

Based on extensive molecular and morphological data, all of the native South American species previously assigned to Sisymbrium (tribe Sisymbrieae) are assigned to the genera Chilocardamum, Mostacillastrum, Neuontobotrys, and Polypsecadium of the tribe Schizopetaleae (Brassicaceae). Akey distinguishing these four genera is presented. For each genus, a revised synopsis, an expanded generic description, a key to species, and an enumeration of all taxa is given. Polypsecadium zoellneri is described as a new species from northern Chile, and its distinguishing characters from its nearest relative P. gilliesii are discussed. The following 36 new combinations are proposed: Chilocardamum castellanosii, C. longistylum, C. onuridifolium, Mostacillastrum andinum, M.... |

The goal of this research was to reconstruct the vegetational and climatic changes that took place during the late Pleisocene and Holocene in southwestern Syria. This reconstruction was based on palynological data obtained from the analysis of 27 sediments and surface samples (with a total thickness of 4.55 m) collected from Al-Hijaneh Lake basin (late Pleistocene) and from Al-Aouaj River valley (Holocene). Three pollen zones were established. The oldest one (zone A) corresponds to the late Pleistocene lacustrine deposits of Lake Al-Hijaneh. Zones B and C were defined in the Holocene fluvial- lacustrine deposits of the Al-Aouaj River valley. These three pollen assemblage zones are correlated to synchronic and similar C14 dated pollen zones from Syria,... |
