Ocorrência de Costalimaita lurida (Lefévre 1891) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) em Eucalyptus spp. em Minas Gerais PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Arnhold, Alexandre; Gonçalves, Dinarte.
Chrysomelids are important pests in forest plantations because they cause injuries and affect tree growth. Among the chrysomelid, Eumolpinae subfamily presents the greatest number of species recorded as pest. The purpose of this study was to register the occurrence and evaluate the attack of Costalimaita lurida (Lefévre, 1891) in a plantation of Eucalyptus spp. in the northern of Minas Gerais state. The attack was observed in September 2006 on a twelve months old plantation of age with the following species being injuried: Eucalyptus grandis, E. saligna, E. urophylla, E. robusta, a hybrid of E. grandis and E. urophylla and also Corymbia torelliana.doi: 10.4336/2010.pfb.30.63.257

Influence of soil acidity and phosphorus in early growth of mahogany PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Cardoso, Arnon Afonso de Souza; Santos, José Zilton Lopes; Tucci, Carlos Alberto Franco; Farias, Elias Paiva; Moura, Rodolfo Pessoa de Melo.
Phosphate fertilization for native perennial species need studies in field conditions and seedling production. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of interaction between phosphorus and lime levels on growth and nutrients content of mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King.), cultivated on a Yellow Latosol Dystrophic typic, in greenhouse. The experimental design was completely randomized factorial, with three replications. The treatments consisted of six doses of P (11; 22; 44; 66; 88 and 110 mg dm-3) and control treatment (without P fertilization), combined with 500 mg dm-3 of limestone or without limestone addition. The addition of increasing doses of P with lime provided increase on early growth and nutrient contents in seedlings of mahogany, however,...

Functional groups in areas with fire history in a savanna area in Brazilian Federal District PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Rios, Mary Naves da Silva; Sousa-Silva, José Carlos.
This study aimed to evaluate the formation of functional groups, in 1994 and 2012, in two areas of savanna with different fire history in Planaltina, Federal District, Brazil. In the Area 1 biennial burnings were applied in August 1988, 1990 and 1992; there was fire protection until July 1994 in the Area 2, the control area. Accidental fire occurred in both areas in August 1994, but from September 1994 to 2012 they were protected. These analysis included individuals with abundance ≥ 5 using the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA). The groups were defined according to the following attributes: dispersal and pollination syndromes, leaf phenology, life form, type of bark and ability to sprouting after fire. Both areas presented...

Genome wide selection (GWS) and maximization of the genetic improvement efficiency PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Resende, Marcos Deon Vilela de; Lopes, Paulo Sávio; Silva, Rogério Luíz da; Pires, Ismael Eleotério.
Genetic selection has been practiced by the best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) method using phenotypic records. A first proposal for enhancement of the efficiency of this procedure was the marker assisted selection (MAS). Later, another method called genome wide selection - GWS was reported, which presents high accuracy for the selection based exclusively on markers, after predicting their genetic effects from phenotypic data in a sample of the population of selection. GWS is excellent for low heritable traits, while MAS is not. This paper presents the GWS methodology and simulates a case of its application, aiming at emphasizing its advantages over MAS. The relation between traditional BLUP and genomic BLUP is also detailed as well as the sample size...

Equations for estimating timber volume in the region of the River Basin of Ituxi, Lábrea, Amazon, Brazil PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Thaines, Fabio; Braz, Evaldo Muñoz; Mattos, Patricia Povoa de; Thaines, Andreia Aparecida Ribeiro.
To quantify the stock of commercial timber in forests demands efficient methods, making possible to estimate efficiently and accurately the present and future timber volume. The aim of this work was to  adjust the mathematical models used to estimate timber volume, allowing the determination of the timber potential of a region with greater accuracy and lower cost. The study was conducted at Lábrea, State of  Amazonas, Brazil in an area of 6,000 ha, inserted in the Project Forest Management Seringal Iracema II. The forest is predominantly dense with emergent trees, also with the occurrence of open forest with bamboo and palms. For the process of adjusting the models to estimate the volume of commercial timber, 141 trees of commercial species were cubed by...

Effects of Urban Waste and Mineral Fertilizers Applications on Eucalyptus grandis Growth and Soil Conditions PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Andrade, Guilherme de Castro; Bellote, Antônio Francisco Jurado; Silva, Helton Damin da; Dedecek, Renato Antônio; Gava, José Luiz Lui.
Forest plantations have been studied as a potential ecosystem able to absorb organic residues as fertilizers or soil conditioners. This study evaluate the effects of the application of composted organic waste and mineral fertilizers in a Eucalyptus grandis (W. Hill ex Maiden) plantation with 86 months of age in Neossolo Quartzarênico. It was analyzed wood production, litter decomposition and the physical and chemical changes in the soil properties. It was observed that the municipal composted organic wastes resulted in an increase of 45.6% in wood volume, as compared to the control. It also increase the velocity of the litterdecomposition on average of 28% and 16% for leaves and twigs respectively, increasing the pH level values and the availability of...
