Testing construct validity of verbal versus numerical measures of preference uncertainty in contingent valuation AgEcon
Akter, Sonia; Bennett, Jeffrey W..
The numerical certainty scale (NCS) and polychotomous choice (PC) methods are two widely used techniques for measuring preference uncertainty in contingent valuation (CV) studies. The NCS follows a numerical scale and the PC is based on a verbal scale. This report presents results of two experiments that use these preference uncertainty measurement techniques. The first experiment was designed to compare and contrast the uncertainty scores obtained from the NCS and the PC method. The second experiment was conducted to test a preference uncertainty measurement scale that combines verbal expressions with numerical and graphical interpretations: a composite certainty scale (CCS). The construct validity of the certainty scores obtained from these three...

THE IMPORTANCE OF WOMEN'S STATUS FOR CHILD NUTRITION IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES AgEcon
Smith, Lisa C.; Ramakrishnan, Usha; Ndiaye, Aida; Haddad, Lawrence James; Martorell, Reynaldo.
Until recently the role of women's social status in determining their children's nutritional health went largely unnoticed. That is, until researchers began to ponder the Asian Enigma-the question of why malnutrition is much more prevalent among children in South Asia than in Sub-Saharan Africa, even though South Asia surpasses Sub-Saharan Africa in most of the principal determinants of child nutrition. This report uses data from 36 countries in three developing regions to establish empirically that women's status, defined as women's power relative to men's, is an important determinant of children's nutritional status. It finds that the pathways through which status influences child nutrition and the strength of that influence differ considerably from one...

Retail Trade Area Analysis Washburn North Dakota AgEcon
Bangsund, Dean A.; Leistritz, F. Larry; Wanzek, Janet K.; Zetocha, Dale F.; Bastow-Shoop, Holly E..
This report is intended to provide an indepth trade area analysis of Washburn, North Dakota. Specific analyses included determining Washburn's main and greater trade areas, identifying the demographic profile of Washburn shoppers, examining important and less important services for patron shoppers of Washburn, identifying neighboring cities that area shoppers patronize, determining distances area shoppers traveled to Washburn, and listing popular newspapers and radio stations among area residents. Current trade area information for Washburn was obtained from a statewide trade area survey conducted by the Department of Agricultural Economics at North Dakota State University in 1989. Recent trends (1980 to 1989) in Washburn population, retail sales, per...

Economic growth and pollution in the long run: the case of carbon dioxide AgEcon
Burke, Paul J..
The concept underpinning the Environmental Kuznets Curve is that economic growth results in reduced pollution in the long run. In this report, an extension of Andreoni and Levinson’s (2001) theoretical model is presented. It demonstrates that an Environmental Kuznets Curve relationship can occur because high incomes allow more adoption of low-emission technologies at higher income levels. Evidence on the determinants of carbon dioxide emissions changes for OECD countries over the period 1961-2004 is presented. It highlights the importance of technology adoption in explaining whether countries have achieved emissions reductions at the same time as experiencing long-run economic growth. However, it is shown that technology adoption is affected by policy...

THE WIC PROGRAM: BACKGROUND, TRENDS, AND ISSUES AgEcon
Oliveira, Victor; Racine, Elizabeth; Olmsted, Jennifer; Ghelfi, Linda M..
The mission of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk. WIC provides nutritious foods to supplement diets, nutrition education, and referrals to health care and other social services. Administered by USDA's Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), the program has grown rapidly since its establishment in 1972, and is now one of the central components of the Nation's food and nutrition assistance system. Almost half of all infants and about one-quarter of all children 1-4 years of age in the United States now participate in the program. Federal program costs were almost $4 billion in fiscal 2000, making WIC the...

Prerequisites and limits for economic modelling of climate change impacts and adaptation AgEcon
Jotzo, Frank.
There is demand for qualitative and quantitative economic analysis on the optimum degree of climate change mitigation and adaptation, the optimal timing of such actions, and their optimum distribution between countries and sectors. This paper discusses what is, as well as what is not, possible for economic modelling in this field. Specific reference is made to the paper by Bosello, Carraro and de Cian (2009), as well as Tol (2009). Integrated assessment modelling can provide powerful qualitative insights (for example, about the need for both mitigation and adaptation and the interactions between the two, or the need for both individual and policy-driven adaptation). However, the more detailed quantitative results from such studies are subject are...

The Ethanol Decade: An Expansion of U.S. Corn Production, 2000-09 AgEcon
Wallander, Steven; Claassen, Roger; Nickerson, Cynthia J..
The recent 9-billion-gallon increase in corn-based ethanol production, which resulted from a combination of rising gasoline prices and a suite of Federal bioenergy policies, provides evidence of how farmers altered their land-use decisions in response to increased demand for corn. As some forecasts had suggested, corn acreage increased mostly on farms that previously specialized in soybeans. Other farms, however, offset this shift by expanding soybean production. Farm-level data reveal that the simultaneous net expansion of corn and soybean acreage resulted from a reduction in cotton acreage, a shift from uncultivated hay to cropland, and the expansion of double cropping (consecutively producing two crops of either like or unlike commodities on the same...

Do Farmers Need Tax-Deferred Savings Accounts to Help Manage Income Risk? AgEcon
Monke, James D..
Farmers' incomes vary with market conditions and yields. The Federal Agriculture Improvement and Reform Act of 1996 places more risk management responsibility on farmers. Savings accounts are one mechanism that could help farmers manage their income variability. Tax incentives have been proposed to encourage the use of such savings accounts, with benefits expected to accrue both to individual farmers and their communities. Participation rules tied to farm income may favor larger, more prosperous farmers. Because many farmers already save or use other methods to smooth household consumption, tax-advantaged accounts may largely substitute for existing risk management methods and offer limited additional overall benefits to the farm sector and rural areas.

Irrigation management transfer: how to make it work for Africa’s smallholders? AgEcon
International Water Management Institute (IWMI).
Based on research presented in “Institutional Alternatives in African Smallholder Irrigation: :Lessons from International Experience with Irrigation Management Transfer (IWMI Research Report 60)” by Tushaar Shah, Barbara van Koppen, Marna de Lange, Madar Samad, and Douglas Merrey. An international review of IMT experiences shows that for transfer to work, the irrigation system must be central to a wealth-creating agriculture within which IMT makes good economic sense to farmers. This is not the case in a majority of Africa’s smallholder schemes. Making IMT work in this context means addressing a number of challenges: smallholder dependency resulting from years of state intervention in farm operations and management, farmers’ inability to depend on...
