OceanDocs
Alvarez Colombo, G.L.; Viñas, M.D..
Themisto gaudichaudii, the most abundant and widely distributed hyperiid amphipod in Argentine shelf waters, provides a source of food for several species of economical value such as the anchovy, mackerel, hake, and squid. Predictive dry weight-length and volume-length regression were established in order to provide an indirect estimation of the individual body mass from a measurement of body length. Samples were collected in San Jorge Gulf and fixed with a 4 o/o formaldehyde solution. The possible effect of formaldehyde fixation on dry weight and volume is discussed.

Estimates of DNA strand breakage in bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) OceanDocs
Blanco, M.; Cruz, D.; Carro, S.; López, R.; Díaz, A.; Sánchez, L.; Santiago, L.; Guevara, C.; Sánchez, L.; Cuetara, E.B.; López, N..
The analysis of DNA damage by mean of Comet or single cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE) assay has been commonly used to assess genotoxic impact in aquatic animals being able to detect exposure to low concentrations of contaminants in a wide range of species. The aims of this work were 1) to evaluate the usefulness of the Comet to detect DNA strand breakage in dolphin leukocytes, 2) to use the DNA diffusion assay to determine the amount of DNA strand breakage associated with apoptosis or necrosis, and 3) to determine the proportion of DNA strand breakage that was unrelated to apoptosis and necrosis. Significant intra-individual variation was observed in all of the estimates of DNA damage. DNA strand breakage was overestimated because a considerable amount...

Benthic foraminifera as pollution indicator in the Bonny estuary, Niger delta. OceanDocs
Dublin-Green, C.O..
A seasonal study of the diversity of benthic foraminifera in the Bonny estuary was carried out at ten Stations located at various zones in the estuary. Four diversity indices, species number[S], Fisher & shannon Wiener function H(S) Equitability (E) were employed in the analysis. Examination of the spatial distribution and seasonal variations of these indices provided information on the responses of the foraminiferal fauna pollution. Diversity indices, S& and H(s) were found to be consistently low at station 5 (NNPC Refinery jetty Okrika). The dominance of pollution – tolerant species such as Ammotium salsum, Miliammina fusca and Ammonia beccarii at this station was also observed. The loe diversity indices recorded at station 5 is attributed to...
