Redescription of immatures of Dasyhelea flavifrons Guérin-Méneville (Culicomorpha: Ceratopogonidae) and new contribution to the knowledge of its larval habitats Anais da ABC (AABC)
DÍAZ,FLORENTINA; MANGUDO,CAROLINA; GLEISER,RAQUEL M.; RONDEROS,MARÍA M..
Abstract: The fourth instar larva and pupa of Dasyhelea flavifrons Guérin-Méneville are redescribed, illustrated, and photomicrographed using binocular, phase-contrast, and scanning electron microscopy. Comparisons with the American species of the grisea group were made. The immatures were collected by using a siphon bottle in tree-holes and from water collected in dead snail shells in Salta Province, Argentina, transported to the laboratory and there bred to the emergence of the adults. Details on larval habitats are given. These are the first records from Argentina and in gastrotelmata.

Impact of immunological state on eco-physiological variables in one of the southernmost lizards in the world Anais da ABC (AABC)
DURAN,FERNANDO; BORETTO,JORGELINA M.; FERNÁNDEZ,JIMENA B.; MOLINA,MORA IBÁÑEZ; MEDINA,MARLIN S.; IBARGÜENGOYTÍA,NORA R..
Abstract: The immune state is an essential component of survival as it directly influences physiological performance and health status. Variation in the leukocyte profile, a significantly increase in body temperature, and a detriment of the eco-physiological performance are among the possible consequences of an unhealthy state. In this study we analyse and discuss how field body temperature, preferred body temperature, the speed for sprint and long runs, locomotor stamina, and body condition can be affected by the immunological state (i.e. leukocyte profile) in a wild population of Liolaemus sarmentoi. Juveniles and adult males with a high percentage of eosinophils, basophils, and a low percentage of monocytes preferred higher body temperatures in a...

Interactions among insect-resistant soybean genotypes extracts with populations of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) susceptible and resistant to its nucleopolyhedrovirus Anais da ABC (AABC)
Piubelli,Giorla C.; Moscardi,Flávio; Hoffmann-Campo,Clara B..
Anticarsia gemmatalis nucleopolyhedrovirus (AgMNPV) is being used in Brazil as a biological insecticide. Host plant resistance of soybean to insects is been searched for and some authors have mentioned the interference of plant chemistry in virus efficiency. Interactions among soybean extracts of genotypes used as a source of resistance (PI 274454 and PI 227687) with different AgMNPV concentrations in populations of A. geatalis susceptible (S) and resistant (R) to the virus were studied at laboratory condition. Higher mortality was observed when larvae fed on diets with extracts of the soybean genotypes compared with those fed on a plain diet (control). The mean lethal concentration (LC50) was reduced about 10 ties in the S-population fed on diets...

Testing the influence of a sand mica mixture on basin fill in extension and inversion experiments Anais da ABC (AABC)
GOMES,CAROLINE J.S.; D'ANGELO,TAYNARA; ALMEIDA,GISELA M.S..
We compare the deformation patterns produced by sand and a sand mica mixture (14:1 ratio of sand to mica by weight) while simulating basin fill in extension and inversion models to analyze the potential of the sand mica mixture for applications that require a strong elasto-frictional plastic analogue material in physical models. Sand and the sand mica mixture have nearly equal angles of internal friction, but the sand mica mixture deforms at a significantly lower level of peak shear stress. In extension, the sand mica mixture basin fill experiments show fewer normal faults. During inversion, the most striking difference between the sand and the sand mica mixture basin fill experiments is related to the internal deformation in fault-propagation folds, which...

Temporal dynamics of the response to Al stress in Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus camaldulensis Anais da ABC (AABC)
Alcântara,Berenice K. de; Pizzaia,Daniel; Piotto,Fernando A.; Borgo,Lucélia; Brondani,Gilvano E.; Azevedo,Ricardo A..
Lipid peroxidation and root elongation of Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus camaldulensis were studied under stress conditions in response to aluminum (Al), a metal known to limit agricultural productivity in acidic soils primarily due to reduced root elongation. In Brazil, the Grancam 1277 hybrid (E. grandis × E. camaldulensis) has been planted in the "Cerrado", a region of the country with a wide occurrence of acidic soils. The present study demonstrated that the hybrid exhibited root growth reduction and increased levels of lipid peroxidation after 24h of treatment with 100 µM of Al, which was followed by a reduction in lipid peroxidation levels and the recovery of root elongation after 48h of Al exposure, suggesting a rapid response to the early...

Characterization and in vitro antitumor activity of polymeric nanoparticles loaded with Uncaria tomentosa extract Anais da ABC (AABC)
RIBEIRO,ANA F.; SANTOS,JULIANA F.; MATTOS,RÔMULO R.; BARROS,ELIANE G.O.; NASCIUTTI,LUIZ EURICO; CABRAL,LÚCIO M.; SOUSA,VALERIA P. DE.
Abstract Uncaria tomentosa (UT) extracts have been shown to have promising anti-tumor activity. We hypothesized that its incorporation into nanostructured systems could improve the anticancer properties. Here, poly-e-caprolactone (PCL) and poly-d,l-lactide-co-glycolide (PLGA) were employed to generate nanoparticles loaded with UT extract in a single emulsion solvent evaporation method. The nanoparticles were characterized by particle size, zeta potential, morphology and entrapment efficiency along with stability and release profiles. The nanoparticles presented entrapment efficiencies above 60% and a mean diameter below 300nm. UT-PCL nanoparticles presented higher entrapment efficiency and mean particle size as well as a slow release rate. The UT-PLGA...

Morphosynthesis: high fidelity inorganic replica of the fibrous network of loofa sponge (Luffa cylindrica) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Mazali,Italo O.; Alves,Oswaldo L..
High fidelity calcium carbonate and hydroxyapatite (bio) inorganic replicas of the fibrous network of the dried fruit of Luffa cylindrica are described, utilizing a facile synthetic route. The loofa sponge is a highly complex macroscopic architectural template, an inexpensive and sustainable resource. In the context of the morphosynthesis, the capability of replication of the loofa sponge opens the possibility of the use of biodiversity in obtaining new materials. We would like to emphasize that the template proposed in this paper, makes possible the preparation of inorganic replicas with a very desirable size, on the centimeter scale. This fact is innovative with respect to inorganic replicas described in the literature, which predominate at the...

Environmental drivers on leaf phenology of ironstone outcrops species under seasonal climate Anais da ABC (AABC)
GARCIA,LETÍCIA C.; BARROS,FERNANDA V.; LEMOS-FILHO,JOSÉ P..
ABSTRACT Banded iron formations (BIF) have a particular vegetation type and provide a good model system for testing theories related to leaf phenology, due to unique stressful environmental conditions. As a consequence of the stressful conditions of BIF environment, we hypothesize that most species would retain at least some significant canopy cover, even at the end of the dry season, independently of growth form - trees, shrubs, and sub-shrubs. Considering the strong seasonality, we also hypothesize that photoperiod and rainfall act as triggers for leaf fall and leaf flushing in these environments. The majority of the fifteen studied species had a semi-deciduous behavior and shed their leaves mainly during the dry season, with a recovery at the end of...

Carbonate Buildups in the Pernambuco Basin, NE Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
BUARQUE,BRUNO V.; BARBOSA,JOSÉ A.; OLIVEIRA,JEFFERSON T.C.; MAGALHÃES,JOSÉ R.G.; CORREIA FILHO,OSVALDO J..
ABSTRACT The Pernambuco Basin represents one of the most prominent regions for deep water oil and gas exploration off the Brazilian coast. This study aims to identify and describe the occurrence of carbonate buildups in the offshore regions of the basin. The study was based on an analysis of a set of 143 2D time-migrated seismic sections that cover the offshore region of the Pernambuco Basin. An interpretation of the seismic dataset was used to define the main seismic sequences related to the main regional pulses of deposition and to identify three main groups of carbonate buildups: 1) shelf margin reefs, 2) patch reefs, and 3) isolated carbonate buildups. The carbonate buildups formed in two main intervals during post-rift sequences of the...

Entry, dispersion and differentiation of microglia in the developing central nervous system Anais da ABC (AABC)
NAVASCUÉS,JULIO; CALVENTE,RUTH; MARÍN-TEVA,JOSÉ L.; CUADROS,MIGUEL A..
Microglial cells within the developing central nervous system (CNS) originate from mesodermic precursors of hematopoietic lineage that enter the nervous parenchyma from the meninges, ventricular space and/or blood stream. Once in the nervous parenchyma, microglial cells increase in number and disperse throughout the CNS; these cells finally differentiate to become fully ramified microglial cells. In this article we review present knowledge on these phases of microglial development and the factors that probably influence them.

Synthesis of calcium-phosphate and chitosan bioceramics for bone regeneration Anais da ABC (AABC)
FINISIE,MELLATIE R.; JOSUÉ,ATCHE; FÁVERE,VALFREDO T.; LARANJEIRA,MAURO C. M..
Bioceramic composites were obtained from chitosan and hydroxyapatite pastes synthesized at physiological temperature according to two different syntheses approaches. Usual analytical techniques (X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, Thermo gravimetric analysis, Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray dispersive energy analysis and Porosimetry) were employed to characterize the resulting material. The aim of this investigation was to study the bioceramic properties of the pastes with non-decaying behavior from chitosan-hydroxyapatite composites. Chitosan, which also forms a water-insoluble gel in the presence of calcium ions, and has been reported to have pharmacologically beneficial effects on osteoconductivity, was added to...

Recovering missing data: estimating position and size of caudal vertebrae in Staurikosaurus pricei Colbert, 1970 Anais da ABC (AABC)
Grillo,Orlando N.; Azevedo,Sergio A.K..
Missing data is a common problem in paleontology. It makes it difficult to reconstruct extinct taxa accurately and restrains the inclusion of some taxa on comparative and biomechanical studies. Particularly, estimating the position of vertebrae on incomplete series is often non-empirical and does not allow precise estimation of missing parts. In this work we present a method for calculating the position of preserved middle sequences of caudal vertebrae in the saurischian dinosaur Staurikosaurus pricei, based on the length and height of preserved anterior and posterior caudal vertebral centra. Regression equations were used to estimate these dimensions for middle vertebrae and, consequently, to assess the position of the preserved middle sequences. It also...

Chemical carcinogenesis Anais da ABC (AABC)
Oliveira,Paula A.; Colaço,Aura; Chaves,Raquel; Guedes-Pinto,Henrique; De-La-Cruz P.,Luis F.; Lopes,Carlos.
The use of chemical compounds benefits society in a number of ways. Pesticides, for instance, enable foodstuffs to be produced in sufficient quantities to satisfy the needs of millions of people, a condition that has led to an increase in levels of life expectancy. Yet, at times, these benefits are offset by certain disadvantages, notably the toxic side effects of the chemical compounds used. Exposure to these compounds can have varying effects, ranging from instant death to a gradual process of chemical carcinogenesis. There are three stages involved in chemical carcinogenesis. These are defined as initiation, promotion and progression. Each of these stages is characterised by morphological and biochemical modifications and result from genetic and/or...
