The type material of Oswaldella billardi Briggs, 1938, has been re-examined and a complete description and figures are presented. The study of that material has allowed to reconsider the systematic position of all the material previously assigned to O. billardi and to determine that part of it belongs to another species. Since it is clearly different from the remaining species of the genus, it is described as Oswaldella erratum spec. nov. |

During our studies of this first part of the brittle-stars collection of the Snellius Expedition (1929-1930) in Indonesia, 37 species were found. Among these, a new genus and a new species of Amphiurid, Paramphichondrius tetradontus, are described; Ophiothrix picteti Loriol is transferred from the subgenus Acanthophiothrix to Ophiothrix s.s.; 17 other species, either rare or of taxonomically confused status, are discussed, i.e., Astroceras elegans, Ophiocentrus koehleri and O. vexator, Macrophiothrix belli, M. longipeda, M. rhabdota, and M. sp. aff. variabilis, Ophiothrix contenta, O. savignyi and O. trilineata (with a new synonym: O. tristis), O. (Acanthophiothrix) armata, O. (A.) spinossissima, O. (Keystonea) martensi, O. (Placophiothrix) hybrida and O.... |

During a visit to the Fiji Islands, of about three weeks in March, 1949, through the kind help of Mr. Harold Gatty at Suva I had the opportunity to make trips to various coral reefs. On one of these trips, on March 18, to the reef of Tomberua, a small island to the south east of the large island Viti Levu, I collected an extensive material of various species of the genus Montipora. Among this material there is one colony of Montipora monasteriata (Forsk.), apparently the first to be reported from the Pacific region, as Crossland (1941, p. 35) states: "It is remarkable that the species, which is not uncommon in the Red Sea, has not appeared in any collection outside this area except in Gravier's from the Gulf of Aden." Forskål's (1775) short description of... |

INTRODUCTION This paper forms the second part of the report dealing with the Faviidae collected during the Snellius Expedition. For the general introduction I refer to part I (Wijsman-Best, 1974). The genera dealt with in the present article, Favites, Goniastrea, Platygyra, Oulophyllia, Leptoria, Hydnophora and Caulastrea were with three exceptions collected at the same localities as the specimens of Favia. For the explanations of localities 1-17 I refer to article I. The additional three localities are (see map fig. 1): 18. Amboina (18 May 1830). By reef and shore collecting on 6th May some material was obtained at Wainitoe. From 2-8 May the mantri Erie accompanied Dr. P. H. Kuenen on his trip to the neighbouring island Haroekoe and collected animals on... |

The Sultanate of Oman harbours rich populations of sponges, especially in the four coral reef areas (Musandam Peninsula, Muscat coast & Daymaniyat islands, coasts of Masirah Island, and the Khuriya Muriya Islands). Up till now, apart from a few incidental samples, the sponges of Oman were known only from five dredge stations made by the John Murray Expedition 1933-1934 off the south coasts of Oman, near the Khuriya Muriya Islands, between 13.5 and 1415 m. Descriptions of the sponges obtained in these dredges were published by Burton (1959) and the specimens are deposited in the collections of the Natural History Museum, London. To complement these dredge samples, we recently obtained samples collected by SCUBA and shore collecting, mostly from the... |

Sixteen out of the seventeen species of shallow-water starfishes reported with certainty from Inhaca Island and Maputo Bay were collected by the author. The seventeenth, Archaster angulatus, was recorded from there by Jangoux (1973). An identification key to these species, both in English and in Portuguese is presented. Four species have not been mentioned previously from Inhaca waters, viz. Astropecten monacanthus (because of earlier incorrect identifications), Monachaster sanderi, not known to occur further south than Zanzibar, Fromia milleporella and Ophidiaster hemprichii, which were not previously known to occur south of Madagascar. Stellaster equestris was found washed ashore on a sandy beach a little north of Maputo. The earlier recorded presence in... |

During antarctic macrozoobenthos research, colonies of Monobrachium were found on small bivalves. The species problem of the genus Monobrachium is discussed and it is stated that there are three species. However, the widespread species Monobrachium parasitum might be a species-complex comprising several species. This can only be confirmed by rearing experiments and/or molecular investigations. Host specificity and the factors influencing the infection of the bivalve species are shown. The impact of the infection is demonstrated to be harmful to the host bivalve, although not of a parasitic nature. The phenomenon of bipolarity within the genus Monobrachium is discussed. |

For the first time Alcyonacea from Tanzania are recorded, including two new species: Cladiella daphnae and Sinularia platylobata. Both these species are described and figured, while descriptions are also given of specimens of Lobophytum crassum von Marenzeller, 1886, L. rotundum Tixier-Durivault, 1957, and L. venustum, Tixier-Durivault, 1957. In addition, Sinularia compactum Tixier-Durivault, 1970 and Sinularia "conferta" (Dana, 1846) are discussed. |
