Temporal variation in the reproductive success of Cacicus haemorrhous (Linnaeus) (Aves, Icterinae) in an Atlantic Forest reserve in Southeast Brazil Zoologia
Duca,Charles; Marini,Miguel Â..
For colonial bird species, egg hatching synchrony has been considered an important factor in their reproductive success. The Red-rumped Cacique, Cacicus haemorrhous (Linnaeus, 1766), is a Passeriformes species (Icterinae) that reproduces in colonies in which groups of females lay their eggs at different periods during the reproductive season. The objective of this study was to evaluate if there was a variation in the reproductive success among C. haemorrhous females groups that lay eggs in different periods along the reproductive season. A total of 192 nests from four colonies were monitored at Parque Estadual do Rio Doce, Minas Gerais state, Brazil, and used to calculate the nest survival probability in different periods (early and late) of the 2001...

Aves de três remanescentes florestais do norte do Estado do Paraná, sul do Brasil, com sugestões para a conservação e manejo Zoologia
Bornschein,Marcos Ricardo; Reinert,Bianca Luiza.
One hundred eighty species in a preliminary inventory were identified. From these, 166 were in an area of 832.5 ha (Mata São Francisco State Park), 84 in another of 9.7 ha (Manoel Júlio de Almeida Municipal Forest) and 99 in the third remnant, briefly sampled, of 218 ha (Mata São Paulo). Comparing these numbers to inventories of nearby sites was considered that the larger area is poor in number of bird species, and believe this to be mainly due to the high degree of environmental degradation. Was considered that the smaller area is rich in birds, but its proximity (375 meters) to the third remnant certainly exeits strong influence. This paper presents the list of birds by site and with their relative frequency of occurrence. A new record for Paraná...

Ascocotyle (Phagicola) rara sp. n. (Digenea, Heterophyidae) from Ixobrychus exilis (Aves, Ardeidae) in Brazil Zoologia
Arruda,Vanessa Santos de; Muniz-Pereira,Luís C.; Pinto,Roberto Magalhães.
Ascocotyle (Phagicola) rara sp. n. is described from the intestine of Ixobiyclius exilis (Gmelin, 1789), a Brazilian bittern. The new species is compared with Ascocotyle (Phagicola) angeloi Travassos, 1928 and Ascocotyle (Phagicola) moUieiiisicola (Sogandares-Bernal & Bridgman, 1960); the main distinguishing characters are related to the aspect of the gonotyl that is not perforated in A. (P.) rara sp. n. when compared to A. (P.) mollienisicola and the absence of the crown of spines at the anteriorend in the new species compared withA. (P.) angeloi. This is an important finding, since human infections by Phagicola spp. have been previously reported in Brazil.

Riqueza de aves da Fazenda Santa Rita, região dos Campos Gerais, Palmeira, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Anjos,Luiz dos; Graf,Vinalto.
Two hundred and eighty eight bird species were registered in Santa Rita Farm, east of Paraná State in Brazil (28º18'S,49º48'W), from February 1990 to January 1991. Eighty four species were registered in all 12 months and eighty three were registered once during this period. October was the richest in number of species (220) and July was the poorest (137). The natural landscape of the Santa Rita farm is composed of open field with several patches of araucaria forest (from 10 to 40 ha) and some small areas of marshland. Two hundred and eight species occurred only in one of these habitats: 163 in the forest, 35 in the open field and 10 in the marshland. The others often occurred in both forest and open field; there is a gradient of occurrence between them....

Foraging behavior of tyrant flycatchers (Aves, Tyrannidae) in Brazil Zoologia
Gabriel,Vagner de A.; Pizo,Marco A..
In this paper we present data on the foraging maneuvers and substrates used to capture preys by 28 species of tyrant flycatchers (Tyrannidae) in Brazil. For six species: Arundinicola leucocephala Linnaeus, 1764, Fluvicola nengeta Linnaeus, 1766, Machetornis rixosa Vieillot, 1819, Myiozetetes similis Spix, 1825, Pitangus sulphuratus Linnaeus, 1766, and Tyrannus melancholicus Vieillot, 1819 -, we go further to investigate perch height, search time, sally distance, and sally angle. With a few exceptions, sally strike was the most frequent foraging maneuver. Living foliage and air were the most frequent substrates used to capture preys. Among the six species studied in detail we found three distinct groups of perch heights: F. nengeta and M. rixosa foraged on...

Morphological study of the testes of the dove Columba livia (Gmelin) (Columbidae, Columbiformes) Zoologia
Maruch,Sandra Maria das Graças; Teles,Maria Eloiza de Oliveira; Ribeiro,Maria das Graças.
Known as "domestic dove", the Columba livia (Gmelin, 1789) is a columbidae species widely distributed in Brazil, whose reproductive biology has been studied by many researchers. The testes of 12 Columba livia males were collected and prepared for histologic examination under an optical microscope, the results of which were analysed and photographed. The tunica albuginea that covers the testes consists of a thick, not very cellular layer of dense connective tissue. Groups of interstitial cells with typical morphological appearance and surrounded by loose, well vascularized connective tissue are observable within the organ, between the seminiferous tubules. The seminiferous tubules are thick, intensely wound and, when seen in cross section, show Sertoli...

Abundance of two Dendrocincla woodcreepers (aves: Dendrocolaptidae) in relation to forest structure in Central Amazonia Acta Amazonica
Cintra,Renato; Maruoka,Adrianny Erika; Naka,Luciano Nicolas.
Few studies have been conducted to verify how the structure of the forest affects the occurence and abundance of neotropical birds. Our research was undertaken between January 2002 and July 2004 at the Reserva Ducke, near Manaus (02º55',03º01'S; 59º53',59º59'W) in central Amazonia, to verify how the forest structure affects the occurrence and abundance of two bird species: the Plain-brown Woodcreeper Dendrocincla fuliginosa and the White-chinned Woodcreeper Dendrocincla merula. Bird species occurrence was recorded using lines of 20 mist-nets (one sample unit), along 51 1-km transects distributed along 9 pararel 8 km trails covering an area of 6400 ha. Along these transects, we placed 50 x 50m plots where we recorded forest structure components (tree...

A first evaluation on the use of Ardea albus feathers as bioindicators of mercury burden in Amazonian ecosystems Acta Amazonica
Gomes,Andreza Lourdes; Vieira,José Luiz Fernandes; Pinheiro,Maria da Conceição Nascimento; Marceliano,Maria Luiza Videira.
We evaluated in this study the total mercury concentration in feathers of Ardea albus collected in a colony located in the city of Belem-PA, Brazil in a prospective trial for its use as bioindicators of mercury burden in Amazonia ecosystems. An Atomic absorption spectrophotometry with gold amalgamation was used for the metal determination. The total mercury average concentration in body feathers was 2.2 ± 1.5 µg.g-1 and 1.3 ± 0.9 µg.g-1 in wing feathers. No correlation was observed between total mercury concentration and the length of body or wing feathers. Total mercury concentration was above 5 µg.g-1 dry weight in only one body feather sample.

Nestling development of the tropical screech-owl ( Megascops choliba ): a successful case report from the southwestern Amazon Acta Amazonica
GUILHERME,Edson; SOUZA,Izabele Rodrigues de.
ABSTRACT This study reports a successful reproductive event in Megascops choliba in eastern Acre, northern Brazil. An active M. choliba nest was monitored from the hatching of the eggs to the departure of the nestlings. Once hatched, the nestlings were weighed every two days to verify their weight gain over time. The nestlings remained in the nest for 30 days. The pattern of weight gain was similar to that found in other birds, presenting a rapid increase over the first 15 days, followed by a drastic reduction in the mean growth rate during the second half of the development period. Our observations indicate that the breeding season of M. choliba in southwestern Amazonia is similar as that reported for the species in the northern hemisphere. These are the...

MODELLING OF 3D-STRUCTURES OF THE RARE MELANOCORTIN-1-RECEPTOR MUTATIONS ASSOCIATED TO MELANISM IN THE BANANAQUIT Acta biol.Colomb.
SEDANO-CRUZ,Raúl; OSORIO,Daniel.
ABSTRACT Melanism in plumage color is often associated to the single nucleotide polymorphism of the melanocortin-1-receptor. Despite the striking association between the substitution of a Glutamic-acid by for a Lysine at position 92 on the MC1R protein and a completely black plumage, an in-depth understanding of the effect of missense mutations on the conformational change and behavior of the MC1R in the lipid bilayer caused by the absence of a crystal structure is lacking. We examine the structural basis for receptor activation using DNA sequences from the GenBank to perform in silico protein homology-based modeling. Our tridimensional model shows that the Alanine for a 179-Threonine substitution is a structural complement of the charge-reversing effect...

COLOMBIAN FROZEN BIODIVERSITY: 16 YEARS OF THE TISSUE COLLECTION OF THE HUMBOLDT INSTITUTE Acta biol.Colomb.
ARBELÁEZ-CORTÉS,Enrique; TORRES,María Fernanda; LÓPEZ-ÁLVAREZ,Diana; PALACIO-MEJÍA,Juan Diego; MENDOZA,Ángela María; MEDINA,Claudia Alejandra.
Collections of frozen tissue samples stand as keystone sources of molecular information to construct biodiversity knowledge, and are particularly challenged if they focus on megadiverse countries. In 1998 the Humboldt Institute (Instituto de Investigación de Recursos Biológicos Alexander von Humboldt) began a tissue collection of Colombian biodiversity (IAvH-CT) and the aim of this work is to present a diagnostic and an historical perspective for that collection, constructed by compiling information and experiences on its management as well as by organizing and curating the information of each catalogued sample. After 16 years, the IAvH-CT harbors 16,469 samples, which represent around 2530 species from 1289 genera, and 323 families of the Colombian...
