Atlas of Organics: Four maps of the world of organic agriculture Organic Eprints
Paull, John; Hennig, Benjamin.
This paper presents four maps of the world of organic agriculture. Density equalising maps (cartograms) have previously been published of the world of organic agriculture based on the reported hectares of certified organically managed agriculture land. The four maps in the present atlas of organic agriculture are visual presentations of current global organics data: (a) certified organic agriculture hectares; (b) certified organic wildculture hectares; (c) total certified organic production hectares (organic agriculture plus wildculture plus forestry plus aquaculture); (d) certified organic producers. Australia dominates in the world map of the organic agriculture hectares, Europe is strongly represented, and Africa is weakly represented. Finland dominates...

Organics Olympiad 2007 - Perspectives on the Global State of Organic Agriculture Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Organic food has been described as the world’s fastest growing food sector, and many countries have now set targets for conversion to Organic Agriculture. The stated goal of the organic movement is the adoption worldwide of Organic Agriculture. That task has a long path to travel, with Organic Agriculture currently accounting for 1.8% of worldwide agricultural land. One strategy for success in any endeavour, is: find out who "the winners” are, identify what they are doing, and do that; and there is a corollary to this maxim. Which countries are leaders in the adoption of Organic Agriculture? In the absence of a single comprehensive index of organic-ness, this paper identifies 12 indices of organic-ness, and presents the leadership by country, for each of...

Effects of agricultural management practices on soil quality: A review of long-term experiments for Europe and China Organic Eprints
Bai, Zhanguo; Caspari, Thomas; Ruiperez Gonzalez, Maria; Batjes, Niels H.; Mäder, Paul; Bünemann, Else K.; de Goede, Ron; Brussaard, Lijbert; Xu, Minggang; Santos Ferreira, Carla Sofia.
In this paper we present effects of four paired agricultural management practices (organic matter (OM) addition versus no organic matter input, no-tillage (NT) versus conventional tillage, crop rotation versus monoculture, and organic agriculture versus conventional agriculture) on five key soil quality indicators, i.e., soil organic matter (SOM) content, pH, aggregate stability, earthworms (numbers) and crop yield. We have considered organic matter addition, no-tillage, crop rotation and organic agriculture as “promising practices”; no organic matter input, conventional tillage, monoculture and conventional farming were taken as the respective references or “standard practice” (baseline). Relative effects were analysed through indicator response ratio...

The Uptake of Organic Agriculture: A Decade of Worldwide Development Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
It has been claimed that organic agriculture is the fastest growing agriculture based industry in the world. The land devoted to organic agriculture worldwide has increased over the past decade from 15.8 million hectares to 37.2 million hectares exhibiting a compounding rate of growth of 8.9% per annum. This paper disaggregates the global growth in organic agriculture land over the past decade using country as the unit of analysis. For each country, two indices of organics sector growth are derived, firstly, the actual hectares increase, and secondly, the hectares-multiplier, that is the factor by which the organic hectares have changed over the decade. Growth over the past decade is presented for 71 countries which taken together account for 35.3 million...

Pride and prejudice - a comparison of consumer preferences for country-of- origins of imported organic foods in Germany and China. Abstract for EMAC 2018 Organic Eprints
Pedersen, Susanne; Aschemann-Witzel, Jessica; Thøgersen, John.
The aim is to investigate why and when consumers in an emerging economy vs. an economically developed country prefer imported to domestic organic food products. A domestic country bias has been found mostly in developed countries. Three studies were conducted with organic consumers in China and Germany: In-store interviews, focus groups and an online survey. A strong domestic country bias for organic food products is confirmed in Germany, and to a much lesser extent in China. German consumers prefer products imported from countries that are geographically and culturally close. Food safety and health concerns are the primary reasons for Chinese consumers buying organic food. Hence, organic products from developed countries are preferred because of...

The organization of Organic vegetable supply chains in China - Flexible property rights and different regimes of smallholder inclusion Organic Eprints
Kledal, Paul Rye; Sulitang, Tuerxunbieke.
This paper analyses to what extent Chinese smallholders are included and benefit from converting their land to organic vegetable production supplying chains under two different property rights regimes destined for either export or domestic sales. Two case areas were chosen for investigation: 1) the Shanghai metropolis where organic vegetable production goes solely for domestic consumption an 2) the rural area around Tai’an city in the province of Shandong where the organic vegetable production is destined for export only. In the Shanghai metropolis small holders are not included at all in the organic vegetable production. Due to better off-farm employment the local county has instead mediated a land transfer of their property right and land use to organic...

Four New Strategies to Grow the Organic Agriculture Sector Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
This paper presents four new strategies for growing the organic agriculture sector. Globally there are 51 million hectares of certified organic agriculture land and a further 39 million hectares of wild culture land. For the past two decades organic agriculture has been growing at 11.9% per annum, thereby doubling the size of the sector every six years. Nevertheless, despite ten decades of advocacy for organics, only 1.1% of the world’s agricultural land is certified organic. From the outset, the strategy has been to advance the sector ‘one farm at a time’. This strategy has left the organics sector well short of the vision of the pioneers of organics who saw organic farming as a universal solution and a practice suited for all farmers and all agriculture....

A Perspective on Organic Agriculture in China - Opportunities and Challenges Organic Eprints
Zhang, Fusuo; Qiao, Yuhui; Wang, Fanghao; Zhang, Weifeng.
With the rapid development of international production and trade in organic food, organic agriculture is also boosting in China. The milestone of Chinese organic agri-culture was set in 1990 with the first export of a certified organic product (tea) from Lin’an county of Zhejiang Province, China, which marked the launch of organic pro-duction in China. By the end of 2005, there had been about 4.384 million ha organic land, including 1.694 million ha organic, 0.61 million ha conversion as well as 2.08 million ha collection area, about half of which is certified area. About 4.93 million tons organic products and nearly 1600 projects had been certified with 300~400 varieties. According to the above data, now China ranks the 3rd largest country of organic...

Organic Agriculture in Australia: Attaining the Global Majority (51%) Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
TThe latest statistics reveal that Australia now has more certified organic agriculture hectares than the rest of the world put together. Organics is a major success story for Australia and the achievement of global majority (51%) is an important organics milestone. Organic agriculture is reported from 181 countries. Australia reported 35,645,038 certified organic hectares and the world total is 69,845,243 hectares. Australia has been the world leader in organics, based on certified organic hectares, since global statistics of organics were first collated and published in 2000. In the two decades since then, global organics has grown at 12% per annum (pa), year on year, while Australian organics has grown at 16% pa. This growth in Australia has ramped up...

Organics Olympiad 2016: Global Indices of Leadership in Organic Agriculture Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Organic production (including agriculture, wild culture, forestry and aquaculture) is a worldwide phenomenon that is practiced in at least 172 countries. The Organics Olympiad presents 14 indices of global organics leadership, each at three levels (Gold, Silver and Bronze). The Organics Olympiad of 2016 yields 29 countries as global organics leaders, and confirms that organics leadership is diversely distributed across countries, large and small, rich and poor, developed and less so, and cuts across linguistic, ethnic and cultural boundaries. Australia continues to lead the world in organic agriculture hectares. Australia also leads in the increase of organic hectares over the past four years (since the Organics Olympiad 2012) and in the number of WWOOF...

Perception of food and locality among Chinese tourist experiences in Finland Organic Eprints
Ma, Fanyi; Liu, Xiuhua; Tikkanen-Kaukanen, Carina; Särkkä-Tirkkonen, Marjo; Mynttinen, Sinikka.
The study applies qualitative methods to reach a more in-depth understanding of Chinese tourists’ relations to food during their visit to Finland. The main interest is to find out how they perceive food and tourism, local food, environmentally friendly food and organic food during their trip. The preliminary results show that the Finnish food and food culture is not familiar among Chinese tourists and they have difficulties to identify the local food in holiday destinations. Concept of organic food was better understood than environmentally friendly food. Attributes like healthy, safer, natural, green, expensive and luxury were associated to the organic food. Additionally, organic food was considered to fulfill high quality standards.

Our Organic Future - Cottage, Corporate, Commodified or Containerized? Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Abstract China achieved a remarkable 1000% increase in organically managed land in 2006. Chinese organic certification is described as the most stringent in the world, and China has both political references and an economic agenda congruent with an organic future. Australian consumers (N = 221) valued produce of Australia at 26.0% more than produce of China. This gap diminished to 10.7% comparing Australia to China/Certified Organic. The valuation gap increased to 28.9% comparing Australia/Certified Organic to China /Certified Organic; and stretched to 43.9% comparing Australia/Certified Organic to China. While Australian consumers are sensitive to provenance, and expressed a resistance to accepting food from China, Australasian food processors suppress...

Biologischer Anbau "Made in China" Organic Eprints
Sternfeld, Eva.

Development Strategy of Organic Agriculture in China: A Case of Rural Urbanization in Xingyi Organic Eprints
Yao, William.
China’s development focus has been on rural development since 2000, as the country tries to upgrade the rural areas’ infrastructure and economy system. Different development methods had been applied with limited sustainability in terms of lifting the income of rural residents, who are primarily farming-based group. In this paper, we will introduce a real case study on an on-going rural urbanization project taking place in rural China, while primarily focusing on how this non-governmental project utilize organic farming to try to shape a possible method to sustainably upgrade the income of the local residents in rural China in the process of a complex rural urbanization development. Rural urbanization movement has been one of China’s most significant...
