Effect of Spirulina platensis meal as feed additive on growth, survival and development in Litopenaeus schmitti shimp larvae OceanDocs

To evaluate the effect of Spirulina platensis inclusion in microdiets for white shrimp Litopenaeus schmitti larvae, a completely randomized experimental design was developed with 4 treatments and three replicates. Diets with 3 inclusion levels (0, 2.5 and 5%) were prepared. A control was fed Artemia nauplii. Larvae were fed for 120 hours from mysis I to postlavae 1 every 4 h, and water quality parameters were measured daily. At the end of the experiment survival was determined, and the development index of the larvae was calculated. The chemical score of the diet was also determined, using the L. schmitti postlarvae amino-acid pattern as reference. Triptophan and hystidine were the first and second limiting amino acids in the diets. Survival was around 80%...

Régimes alimentaires de trois principales espèces piscicoles élevées en Côte d'Ivoire. OceanDocs

Lors de l'introduction d'une espèce en élevage, outre la maîtrise de sa reproduction, il convient de déterminer ses besoins nutritionnels en vue de définir un aliment adapté. La connaissance préalable du régime alimentaire de l'espèce concernée dans son habitat naturel est alors indispensable. La nature même de ce régime est très variable et fonction du milieu, de la saison, de l'espèce et de son stade physiologique. Cette fiche technique a pour but de présenter succinctement trois espèces de poissons habituellement élevés en Côte d'Ivoire et la nature de leur régime alimentaire en milieu naturel. Il s'agit du Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, du Mâchoiron Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus et du Silure Heterobranchus longifilis.

A research program was carried out to improve and facilitate rotifer (<i>Brachionus plicatilis</i>) culturing as well as to assure their optimal nutritional quality as a prey, concentrating on the development of a dry and complete rotifer diet that does not require the use of algae and does result in a HUFA rich <i>Brachionus</i>. Manipulated yeast diets as a partial algal substitute for the nursery culture of the hard clam <i>Mercenaria mercenaria</i> OMA

Rearing bivalve molluscs in commercial hatchery and nursery systems has so far relied on the production of live algae, which is costly and often unpredictable. Therefore the development of satisfactory artificial diet would greatly reduce the operating costs of bivalve operations. The development of techniques to improve the nutritional composition and digestibility of yeasts resulted in a product with great potential as a substitute for unicellular algae. Effect of dietary essential fatty acids on egg quality and larviculture success of the greasy grouper (<i>Epinephelus tauvina</i> F.): preliminary results OMA

In spite of its aquaculture potential, the larval rearing of greasy grouper (<i>Epinephelus tauvina</i>) remains problematic and is not yet commercially feasible. The low and unpredictable larval survival is due to difficulties encountered in spawning the broodstock, the small size of the larvae at first feeding, and the high sensitivity of the larvae until day 45. The nutritional requirements for the broodstock as well as for the young larvae are still enigmatical. In this presentation the impact of supplementing the highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA), eicosapentaenoic (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) to the broodstock and larval diets is illustrated.

Protein digestion in juvenile turbot (<i>Scophthalmus maximus</i>) and effects of dietary administration of <i>Vibrio proteolyticus</i> OMA

The trial was made to study the protein digestion in juvenile turbot during passage of digesta from stomach to rectum. Moreover, diet supplementation with the potential probiotic bacteria, <i>Vibrio proteolyticus</i>, was evaluated with regard to protein digestion. For a 3-week period, fish (25-30 g) were fed by oral intubation and received either a liquid mixture consisting of 40% nonpurified control diet and 60% water or this mixture supplemented with 10 <sup>10</sup> viable <i>V. proteolyticus</i> ml <sup>-1</sup>. Growth response of penaeid postlarvae to dry diets containing <i>Artemia</i> biomass meal OMA

The results are presented of a feeding experiment conducted with post-larvae of <i>Penaeus monodon</i> and <i>P. vannamei</i> using formulated dry feeds in which <i>Artemia</i> biomass was incorporated. The total and partial substitution for Artemia nauplii were evaluated. Survival rates in the experiment were not very high, indicating that nutritionally balance dry diets do not support the same growth as Artemia nauplii, which must contain a particular ingredient yet to be identified

Production and application of on-grown <i>Artemia</i> in freshwater ornamental fish farm OMA

This paper describes a pilot culture system for the production of on-grown <i>Artemia</i> in freshwater ornamental fish farms. The system had 21 culture units, each consisting essentially of three components: an oval-shaped raceway, an air-water lift system and two waste collectors. Using artificial seawater at 20 ppt for culture and at a mean production rate of 3 kg/m<sup>3</sup> of water in a 12-day cycle, the system had a production capacity of 8 metric tons of on- grown <i>Artemia</i> a year. International study on <i>Artemia</i> : 33. Promising results in larval rearing of <i>Penaeus stylirostris</i> using a prepared diet as algal substitute and for <i>Artemia</i> enrichment OMA

The importance of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) such as 20:5omega3 and 22:6omega3 has been investigated for the larvae of the blue shrimp <i>Penaeus stylirostris</i>. HUFA-rich or HUFA-enriched <i>Artemia</i> nauplii yielded higher production results in the hatchery than HUFA-poor <i>Artemia</i> especially when yeast was used as a substitute for algae during the early larval stages. Best results were obtained when a HUFA-rich formulated diet was used as a supplement to the yeast and as an enrichment for the <i>Artemia</i> nauplii. Differences in production results could be attributed to the HUFA content in living and non-living larval diets.

Maturation performance, offspring quality and lipid composition of <i>Macrobrachium rosenbergii</i> females fed increasing levels of dietary phospholipids OMA

The effects of increasing levels of dietary phospholipids (PL) on the reproductive performance, egg and larval quality, and lipid composition of females of the freshwater prawn <i>Macrobrachium rosenbergii</i> were investigated. Three isolipidic diets containing similar amounts of highly unsaturated fatty acids but varying levels of PL (0.8, 2.4 and 4.6%) were fed during 180 days to three groups of eight females originating from Thai ponds. No significant differences were observed for fecundity, egg size and hatchability, starved larvae size, and size, survival and tolerance to stress of 8 day-old larvae. Comparison of phosphatidylcholine purified from soybean and marine fish roe in the diet of postlarval <i>Penaeus vannamei</i> Boone OMA

The effects of adding two different types of phosphatidylcholine (PC) (purified from soybean lecithin, SPC, or marine fish roe, MPC) on growth, survival and osmotic stress resistance as well as lipid and fatty acid composition of postlarval <i>Penaeus vannamei</i> was determined. PC was added at a level of 1.5% in a semi-purified diet containing similar levels of essential fatty acids (EFA). A PC-free diet served as the control treatment. Brine shrimp being non-selective filter-feeders, cheap agricultural waste products should be evaluated as potential food sources for their controlled mass culturing. Preliminary results of screening tests performed with wheat bran, soybean meal , rice bran and whey powder in culturing systems of various size are reported. Wheat bran appears to be unsuitable as monodiet for brine shrimp. Experiences on importance of diet for shrimp postlarval quality OMA

This paper gives an overview of own experiences with respect to the impact of dietary conditions on the quality of postlarval penaeid shirmp. Direct nutrient-specific effects are documented for highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA), phosphatidyl choline (PC) and ascorbic acid (AA). Specific immunostimulants may also contribute to an improved stress resistance of the shrimp fry. Last, but not least, some emphasis is placed on the role of the microflora during the hatchery rearing, the possible reduction of bacteria in the live food adminstered, and the use of probionts through the diet.

Baker's yeast as a potential substitute for live algae in aquaculture diets: <i>Artemia</i> as a case study OMA

In this study baker's yeast was evaluated as a substitute for live <i>Dunaliella tertiolecta</i> algae in the culture of the brine shrimp <i>Artemia</i> . Consumption of fresh baker's yeast resulted in poor growth and survival of brine shrimp. However, the nutritional value of the yeast significantly improved after complete removal of the yeast cell wall by enzymatic treatment. Baker's yeast was also made digestible for <i>Artemia</i> by simple chemical treatment which did not reduce rigidity of the yeast cell. The external mannoprotein layer of the yeast cell wall is probably the major barrier to digestion by <i>Artemia</i> . Promising results in the seed culturing of the Manila clam <i>Tapes semidecussata</i> with a manipulated yeast product as a partial substitute for algae OMA

The results are presented of preliminary trials conducted with <i>Tapes semiducussata</i> spat using manipulated yeast products as substitutes for unicellular algae in their diets. Findings showed that spat growth increased with increasing amounts of algae in the artificial diet; growth was very poor when no algae were offered at all. It is concluded that manipulated yeasts may replace a substantial part of the algae in clam diets, but complete replacement is not possible, yet.

Improved production of postlarval white shrimp through supplementation of L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate in their diet OMA

L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (ApP) was used as a vitamin C source to study the ascorbic acid (AA) requirements for the early postlarval stages of white shrimp (<i>Penaeus vannamei</i>). First the stability of ApP in the diets was determined: ApP losses after pelletizing and 10 min immersion in seawater were 25-35% and 30%, respectively. Semipurified diets with five levels of ApP (0, 20, 40, 100 and 200 mg kg<sup>-1</sup> expressed as active AA were fed <i>ad libitum</i> to <i>P. vannamei</i> (PL-14 stage, mean dry weight 0.73 mg) for 26 days. Optimization of dietary vitamin C in fish and crustacean larvae: a review OMA

HPLC techniques were adapted and standardized for quantification of ascorbic acid (AA) and its derivates in both diets and target organisms. To assess the dietary needs for AA at start of exogenous feeding, the AA content in the various live diets currently used in aquaculture (algae, rotifers, <i>Artemia</i> ) was analyzed. Application of techniques for boosting vitamin C using ascorbyl palmitate as the source enabled the transfer of elevated levels (up to 2,500 µg AA/g DW) of bioactive vitamin C. A beneficial effect of dietary phospholipid (PL) supplementation in purified diets in terms of survival, growth, resistance to stress tests, and occurrence of deformities has been demonstrated in larval and juvenile stages of various species of fish and crustaceans. The exact determination of PL requirements in larvae is complicated due to the difficulty to bio-encapsulate PL in live prey. Fat Chance: Modelling the Socio-Economic Determinants of Dietary Fat Intake in China AgEcon

Quantile Regression methods have much to offer the investigation of the determinants of dietary intake. Dietary inadequacy or excess occurs at the tails of nutrient and food intakes, and it seems intuitive that intake responses in these areas will differ from elsewhere along the intake distribution. We apply quantile regression to examine the drivers of a key aspect of dietary health, fat density of energy intake in China. The sample of 2612 individuals between the ages of 20 and 45 is derived from the China Health and Nutrition Survey.
