To evaluate the effect of Spirulina platensis inclusion in microdiets for white shrimp Litopenaeus schmitti larvae, a completely randomized experimental design was developed with 4 treatments and three replicates. Diets with 3 inclusion levels (0, 2.5 and 5%) were prepared. A control was fed Artemia nauplii. Larvae were fed for 120 hours from mysis I to postlavae 1 every 4 h, and water quality parameters were measured daily. At the end of the experiment survival was determined, and the development index of the larvae was calculated. The chemical score of the diet was also determined, using the L. schmitti postlarvae amino-acid pattern as reference. Triptophan and hystidine were the first and second limiting amino acids in the diets. Survival was around 80%... |

Lors de l'introduction d'une espèce en élevage, outre la maîtrise de sa reproduction, il convient de déterminer ses besoins nutritionnels en vue de définir un aliment adapté. La connaissance préalable du régime alimentaire de l'espèce concernée dans son habitat naturel est alors indispensable. La nature même de ce régime est très variable et fonction du milieu, de la saison, de l'espèce et de son stade physiologique. Cette fiche technique a pour but de présenter succinctement trois espèces de poissons habituellement élevés en Côte d'Ivoire et la nature de leur régime alimentaire en milieu naturel. Il s'agit du Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, du Mâchoiron Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus et du Silure Heterobranchus longifilis. |

In spite of its aquaculture potential, the larval rearing of greasy grouper (<i>Epinephelus tauvina</i>) remains problematic and is not yet commercially feasible. The low and unpredictable larval survival is due to difficulties encountered in spawning the broodstock, the small size of the larvae at first feeding, and the high sensitivity of the larvae until day 45. The nutritional requirements for the broodstock as well as for the young larvae are still enigmatical. In this presentation the impact of supplementing the highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA), eicosapentaenoic (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) to the broodstock and larval diets is illustrated. |

The effects of increasing levels of dietary phospholipids (PL) on the reproductive performance, egg and larval quality, and lipid composition of females of the freshwater prawn <i>Macrobrachium rosenbergii</i> were investigated. Three isolipidic diets containing similar amounts of highly unsaturated fatty acids but varying levels of PL (0.8, 2.4 and 4.6%) were fed during 180 days to three groups of eight females originating from Thai ponds. No significant differences were observed for fecundity, egg size and hatchability, starved larvae size, and size, survival and tolerance to stress of 8 day-old larvae. Brine shrimp being non-selective filter-feeders, cheap agricultural waste products should be evaluated as potential food sources for their controlled mass culturing. Preliminary results of screening tests performed with wheat bran, soybean meal , rice bran and whey powder in culturing systems of various size are reported. Wheat bran appears to be unsuitable as monodiet for brine shrimp. The other products tested support good growth although specific precautions have to be taken with some foods to avoid problems of water quality during culturing. In this study baker's yeast was evaluated as a substitute for live <i>Dunaliella tertiolecta</i> algae in the culture of the brine shrimp <i>Artemia</i> . Consumption of fresh baker's yeast resulted in poor growth and survival of brine shrimp. However, the nutritional value of the yeast significantly improved after complete removal of the yeast cell wall by enzymatic treatment. Baker's yeast was also made digestible for <i>Artemia</i> by simple chemical treatment which did not reduce rigidity of the yeast cell. L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (ApP) was used as a vitamin C source to study the ascorbic acid (AA) requirements for the early postlarval stages of white shrimp (<i>Penaeus vannamei</i>). First the stability of ApP in the diets was determined: ApP losses after pelletizing and 10 min immersion in seawater were 25-35% and 30%, respectively. Semipurified diets with five levels of ApP (0, 20, 40, 100 and 200 mg kg<sup>-1</sup> expressed as active AA were fed <i>ad libitum</i> to <i>P. vannamei</i> (PL-14 stage, mean dry weight 0.73 mg) for 26 days. HPLC techniques were adapted and standardized for quantification of ascorbic acid (AA) and its derivates in both diets and target organisms. To assess the dietary needs for AA at start of exogenous feeding, the AA content in the various live diets currently used in aquaculture (algae, rotifers, <i>Artemia</i> ) was analyzed. Application of techniques for boosting vitamin C using ascorbyl palmitate as the source enabled the transfer of elevated levels (up to 2,500 µg AA/g DW) of bioactive vitamin C. In the frame work of a PhD thesis dealing with the use of artificial diets as an algal substitute for mollusks, the Laboratory of Aquaculture & Artemia Reference Center (State University of Ghent, Belgium) is organizing an inquiry which aims at drawing up an inventory of algal substitutes, their cost and applications, and their relative importance and cost-efficiency compared to live algae. The questionnaire has been sent to more than 200 people who are involved in the practice of culturing bivalves. A beneficial effect of dietary phospholipid (PL) supplementation in purified diets in terms of survival, growth, resistance to stress tests, and occurrence of deformities has been demonstrated in larval and juvenile stages of various species of fish and crustaceans. The exact determination of PL requirements in larvae is complicated due to the difficulty to bio-encapsulate PL in live prey. Quantile Regression methods have much to offer the investigation of the determinants of dietary intake. Dietary inadequacy or excess occurs at the tails of nutrient and food intakes, and it seems intuitive that intake responses in these areas will differ from elsewhere along the intake distribution. We apply quantile regression to examine the drivers of a key aspect of dietary health, fat density of energy intake in China. The sample of 2612 individuals between the ages of 20 and 45 is derived from the China Health and Nutrition Survey.
