Ecophysiological performance of a threatened shrub under restored and natural conditions in a harsh tropical mountaintop environment Acta Botanica
Castro,Silvana A. B.; Sá,Camila E. M.; Mourão,Fabiana A.; Duarte,Heitor M.; Fernandes,G. Wilson; Lemos-Filho,José P..
Ecophysiological responses of plants are useful for monitoring the success of ecological restoration projects that target species conservation. In this study we evaluated the ecophysiological traits of individuals of Chamaecrista semaphora from a natural population and from a site under restoration. Water potential and chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters were measured both in adult and young plants of the two populations. No difference in water potential was found between sites, but individuals in the restored site had higher water potential at predawn. Adults in the natural site presented lower daily values of potential quantum yield, indicating the occurrence of photoinhibition. Individuals in the restored site also presented higher maximum relative...

Structure of understory bird communities in Atlantic Forest Remnants in Northeastern Brazil Biological Sciences
Melo, Daniela de Carvalho; Ferreira, Alvino Pedrosa; Loures Ribeiro, Alan.
The Atlantic Forest in the State of Paraíba integrates the Pernambuco Center of Endemism. The present work investigated understory bird communities of three of its remnants using ten mist nets installed at eight different points of the forest understory of each area. We captured 333 birds of 44 species and 19 families. Bird richness and abundance did not differ between the three remnants (KW = 6.08; p = 0.04 and KW = 10.54; p = 0.004). The composition was little similar among them, and each area presented high species diversity and evenness. The most captured species were Arremon taciturnus (n = 40), Chiroxiphia pareola (n = 32) and Conopophaga melanops (n = 28). C. melanops has a local threat status of “vulnerable” and is considered endemic. Endangered...

Medium-sized mammals in peri-urban environments in southern Brazil Biological Sciences
Tedesco, Carla Denise; Silva, Douglas Machado da; Zanella, Noeli.
Anthropic effects on natural environments caused by urban expansion or agriculture have been identified as one of the causes for the decline in species richness. In southern Brazil, the urbanization process affects the local fauna and reduces the diversity of mammalian species. This study was conducted from 2012 to 2015 with the objective of gathering information on mammalian species in a peri-urban area. Data was collected four consecutive days each month for 42 months using sand plots and visual searches. Occasional encounters and camera traps complemented were used to complement the data. We recorded 15 mammal species belonging to 10 families. The species with the highest abundance, taking into account all the applied methods, were Didelphis...

Distribution pattern of anurans from three mountain complexes in southeastern Brazil and their conservation implications Anais da ABC (AABC)
NEVES,MATHEUS O.; PEREIRA,ELVIS A.; SUGAI,JOSÉ LUIZ M.M.; ROCHA,SABINE B. DA; FEIO,RENATO N.; SANTANA,DIEGO J..
ABSTRACT Biogeographic tools support spatial distribution pattern hypotheses and help to determine priority areas for conservation. Our aim was to verify biogeographic patterns for anurans in three mountain complexes in southeastern Brazil, as well as to discuss the status of species conservation recorded and the biogeographical units evaluated. We selected 16 areas distributed in the Serra da Mantiqueira complex, south of Serra do Espinhaço and Serra da Canastra. We used the occurrence (geographic coordinates) of each species in the localities to determine areas of endemism applying the Endemicity Analysis method. We also tested whether similarity between areas was explained by geographic distance (Multiple Regression on distance Matrices-MRM). The Serra...

Microcutting culture and morpho-physiological changes during acclimation in two Lycium chilense cytotypes Biocell
Maseda,Pablo Horacio; Lemcoff,Jorge Hugo; Murúa,Mercedes; Frayssinet,Nora; Carceller,Marta Susana.
Lycium chilense, a deciduous perennial shrub, is one of the endangered native species of Patagonia due to sheep overgrazing. Chances of recolonization by seeds are scarce due to the limited density of propagules in the soil and very specific requirements for germination. The objective was to develop an in vitro propagation protocol that would help to perform reestablishment of this species in degraded areas of the Patagonian steppe. Seeds came from two provenances with different somatic number due to differences in ploidy level. Defoliated microcuttings were planted in test tubes with different growing media and taken to a growth chamber. Rooting percentage did not differ between origins, but higher values were encountered for medium without hormones....

Karyological and electrophoretic differences between Pomacea flagellata and P. patula catemacensis: Caenogastropoda: Ampullariidae Biocell
Diupotex-Chong,María Esther; Cazzaniga,Néstor J; Uribe-Alcocer,Manuel.
The widespread Mexican apple snail Pomacea flagellata (Say 1827) and the strictly endemic "tegogolo" P. patula catemacensis (Baker 1922) (restricted to Lake Catemaco), are the only known American Ampullariidae that have haploid complements n=13. Pomacea patula catemacensis has suffered a critical reduction in abundance due to immoderate fishing for human consumption. Chromosome slides were obtained from colchicine-injected Pomacea snails collected from nine locations along the coastal zone of the Gulf of Mexico, including Lake Catemaco, for use in principal component analysis (PCA). Total proteins in foot homogenates were analyzed through isoelectric focusing (IEF) and native-PAGE electrophoresis on polyacrylamide gels. The chromosome number 2n=26 was...

Travassos,Leandro; Carvalho,Israel Dias; Pires,Alexandra S.; Gonçalves,Sérgio Nunes; Oliveira,Paulo Malvino; Saraiva,Alexandre; Fernandez,Fernando A. S..
Abstract: The Tinguá Biological Reserve (TBR) is the largest protected area of this category in Rio de Janeiro state. Here, for the first time, we present the historical composition of terrestrial mammals' assemblage of TBR region. An inventory was conducted using transect surveys, nonstandard transects, survey of museum specimens and informal reports. Considering all the data, eighty-five species were recorded, placing TBR as the second one in the number of mammals recorded in "Serra do Mar" ecoregion of Atlantic Forest and in the Rio de Janeiro state. Among the species with historical records are the jaguar (Panthera onca) and the golden-lion-tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia) while the current presence of the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) was...

Ichthyofauna of the rio Itatinga in the Parque das Neblinas, Bertioga, São Paulo State: composition and biogeography Biota Neotropica
Serra,Jane Piton; Carvalho,Fernando Rogério de; Langeani,Francisco.
Little is known about the ichthyofauna from South American coastal plain, specially concerning the Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Forest) rivers and streams, as there are regions little explored which may have non-described or rare species. An example is the Parque das Neblinas, a Natural Patrimony Private Reserve (RPPN) in the Bertioga municipality, São Paulo state, where no ichthyofaunal study had been done before. The park's hydrography is made up by the rio Itatinga with its various tributary streams, which flow into the Itapanhaú river basin. Nine sites were sampled using sieves, seines and gill nets; 1,086 specimens of seven species, three orders and five families were captured. The most representative species were Astyanax paranae, Phalloceros...

Ichthyofauna of Rio Jurubatuba, Santos, São Paulo: a high diversity refuge in impacted lands Biota Neotropica
Mattox,George Mendes Taliaferro; Iglesias,José Manoel Pires.
Ichthyofaunistic surveys in the Atlantic Rainforest have been published in relatively few works, in spite of the major biological importance of this once vast biome which is rapidly vanishing due to disordered human population growth and natural resources overexploitation. The present study aimed to access the fish fauna of a relatively well preserved basin between the cities of Santos and Cubatão (SP), an area highly modified by human activities where recent ichthyofaunistic surveys are still missing. Collections were made during three field trips in Rio Jurubatuba, a medium sized costal river, and Riacho Sabão, one of its main tributaries. A total of 2773 specimens were sampled, representing 25 species from 14 families. Six species were primary marine...

Flagging a species as threatened: the case of Eptesicus taddeii, an endemic bat from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest Biota Neotropica
Bernard,Enrico; Nascimento,Jorge Luiz do; Aguiar,Ludmilla Moura de Souza.
The IUCN Red List is an important conservation tool. Although its criteria are used worldwide, in most cases the classification process per se is restricted to a group of experts with restricted or no participation of the general public. This may raise concerns from final Red List users, which, without knowing the data or procedures adopted by the experts, may argue on the outcomes, final classification adopted, or the overall use of the lists. IUCN recommends that all assessments must be backed up by data and justifications, making them as accurate and transparent as possible. We describe here the assessment of Eptesicus taddeii, a bat species endemic to the southern Atlantic Forest of Brazil, indicating how and why the species was flagged as Vulnerable -...

Confirmation of the northermost population of the endangered butterfly Heliconius nattereri C. Felder & R. Felder, 1865 (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) Biota Neotropica
Cardoso,Márcio Zikán; Brito,Marcos Roberto; Lion,Marília Bruzzi.
Abstract Heliconius nattereri C. Felder & R. Felder, 1865 is an enigmatic and rarely collected species. Because of severe habitat reduction, the species is currently listed as endangered. We here report the confirmation of a northernmost population. This collection and further observations reported here add two more known localites to the distribution of the species. Two of the three confirmed locations are in protected areas. We worry that the northern population may be at great risk because it is not formally protected. We urge conservation efforts to preserve the local forests where the species is found.

Feeding ecology of carnivores (Mammalia, Carnivora) in Atlantic Forest remnants, Southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Rocha-Mendes,Fabiana; Mikich,Sandra Bos; Quadros,Juliana; Pedro,Wagner André.
The diet of some sympatric carnivore species in three Atlantic Forest remnants of Southern Brazil was studied in order to assess their food niche. We conducted monthly field trips between February 2003 and January 2004 to collect fecal samples that were subsequently examined together with others collected sporadically between November 1994 and January 2003. Of the 416 samples analysed, 198 had the "author" species identified through microscopic analysis guard hairs, which revealed the presence of 10 carnivores and some information about their diet. Puma yagouaroundi had the largest dietary niche breadth, whereas Leopardus tigrinus and Nasua nasua showed the lowest values. Extensive niche overlap was observed between L. tigrinus and N. nasua, L. tigrinus...

Medium and large-sized mammals of the Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçú, Cachoeiras de Macacu, RJ Biota Neotropica
de Carvalho,Israel Dias; de Oliveira,Rildo; dos Santos Pires,Alexandra.
Medium and large-sized terrestrial mammals develop important functions in ecosystems maintenance. However, this group is the most vulnerable to local extinctions, through habitat loss or hunting. This study inventoried the community of medium and large mammals in the Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçú (REGUA), Cachoeiras de Macacu, RJ, providing data on species composition, richness and abundance. Species were registered through the use of camera traps, sign survey and visual encounters on pre-existing trails and roads. The study was conducted from January to October 2012, with each month considered as a sample unit. An effort of 1568 cameras-day and 120 km traveled, resulted on 302 records of 22 species of medium and large-sized mammals, belonging to eight...

Temperature Dependent Seed Germination of Dalbergia nigra Allem (Leguminosae) BABT
Ferraz-Grande,Fernanda G. A.; Takaki,Massanori.
The germination of endangered species Dalbergia nigra was studied and 30.5° C was found as optimum temperature, although the species presented a broad temperature range where germination occurs and light had no effect. The analysis of kinetics of seed germination confirmed the asynchronized germination below and above the optimum temperature. The light insensitive seed and germination also at high temperatures indicated that D. nigra could occur both in understories and gaps where the mean temperature was high.

Vegetative responses to temperature and photoperiod in saplings of brazilwood (Caesalpinia echinata Lam., Leguminosae) Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Rondon,Josimara N.; Zaidan,Lilian B.P.; Domingos,Marisa; Barbedo,Claudio J.; Figueiredo-Ribeiro,Rita de Cássia L..
Caesalpinia echinata Lam. (brazilwood) is an endangered tree species occurring along the eastern coast of Brazil from latitudes 5°56´S to 22°56´S. With such a range of distribution it is expected that temperature and daylength may affect plant development, which was examined in this study. One- and five-year-old saplings were grown under controlled photoperiods of 8 h, 12 h and 20 h, and in a greenhouse under natural light during 16 months. In another experiment, one-year-old saplings were cultivated for six months in a growth cabinet, with reduced maximum temperature, and in the greenhouse. Leaf number, stem height and stem diameter at the soil surface were evaluated every two months (experiment 1) or every month (experiment 2). In experiment 1, no...

In vitro rooting of Beilschmiedia berteroana, endemic to the South Central area of Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Uribe,Matilde; Sandoval,Marian; Méndez,Amado; Mora,Freddy; Delaveau,Catherine.
Beilschmiedia berteroana ("belloto del sur") is a screrophyllous tree of the family Lauraceae that is endemic to the Central-South region of Chile. It is an endangered species; considered a second priority in the "Extinction Danger" category. This species is known for its timber, fruits and lots of mucilages, also has great potential for its size and ornamental evergreen foliage. This study had as a main objective to develop an in vitro rooting protocol of microshoots, obtained from the proliferation phase, by adding auxin: indole 3-butyric acid (IBA), naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and indole 3-acetic acid (IAA) in order to contribute to the recovery of the species. Results are discussed in the rooting phase, where this species is induced or maintained in...
