Évaluation monétaire des services écosystémiques. Un exemple d’usage dans la mise en place d’une politique de l’eau en France ArchiMer
Feuillette, Sarah; Levrel, Harold; Blanquart, Stéphanie; Gorin, Olivier; Monaco, Guillaume; Penisson, Bruno; Robichon, Stéphane.
In the context of the Water Framework Directive, the French Water Agencies were asked to justify exemptions, for disproportionate cost reasons, to the “good water” status in a series of river basins in 2015. The ministry of the Environment and the economists of the Water Agencies agreed on the fact that this justification would be based on cost-benefit analyses. A great number of cost-benefit analyses were carried out on water bodies or groups of water bodies. This article reports on this experience conducted by the French Water Agencies. It highlights the fact that the large majority of restoration projects generated higher costs than benefits. It suggests that the implementation of the Water Framework Directive could be considerably limited by the use of...

In the marine environment, positive law generates multiple zones and regulatory limits that overlap in space, justifying a cartographic representation as a relevant approach to promote understanding (synthetic vision), analysis (highlighting legal anomalies, inconsistencies and redundancies), dissemination and communication to different audiences (awareness-raising). The article presents a methodology leading to the mapping of marine and coastal environmental law in West Africa, using a geographic information base to produce static or interactive cartographic representations via a Geographic Data Infrastructure (GDI). It shows the contribution of this type of mapping to a transversal approach in a multi-activity, multi-sectoral and multi-scale context. A...

From bottom landers to observatory networks ArchiMer
Person, Roland; Aoustin, Yannick; Blandin, Jerome; Marvaldi, Jean; Rolin, Jean-francois.
For a long time, deep-sea investigation relied on autonomous bottom landers. Landers call vary in size from 200 kg weight to more than 2 t for the heaviest scientific landers and are used during exploration cruises oil medium periods, from one week to some months. Today, new requirements appear. Scientists want to understand in detail the phenomena outlined during exploration cruises, to elaborate a model for future forecasting. For this, it is necessary to deploy instrumentation at a precise location often for a long period. A new mode of ocean science investigation Using long-term seafloor observatories to obtain four dimensional data sets has appeared. Although this concept has been proposed for many years, the high level of investment required limits...

Preliminary data on the impact of fish farming facilities on Posidonia oceanica meadows in the Mediterranean ArchiMer
Pergent, G; Mendez, S; Pergent-martini, C; Pasqualini, V.
While the extension of aquaculture along the coasts of the Mediterranean islands is today an economic priority, no data is available on the impact of these facilities on the littoral environment in general, and in particular on the Posidonia oceanica meadows that are responsible for the richness and diversity of these biotopes. The impact of fish farming facilities in the marine littoral environment is assessed at three Mediterranean sites in Corsica and Sardinia. Various parameters are considered: (i) the amount of light available, (ii) the nature of the sediment, and (iii) the vitality of the Posidonia oceanica beds. The findings confirm the impact of the aquaculture facilities within the water column (increase in turbidity, enrichment of the sediment in...

Ecosystem approach to fisheries: a brief overview and some considerations for its application in ICCAT ArchiMer
Fromentin, Jean-marc; Fonteneau, Alain; Restrepo, Victor.
During the last SCRS plenary meeting, the sub-committee on environment suggested to present a document on the ‘Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries’ (EAF). This document firstly recalls the general scientific and institutional background of EAF, then we propose a synoptic view of EAF, including four main domains: governance, exploitation, resources and impacts on ecosystems. The way that EAF is tackled within the various tuna commissions is then summarised. Finally, we rapidly examine the way the SCRS could cope with EAF issues and we suggest to merge the sub-committee on environment with this on by-catch into a single subcommittee on ecosystem.

Protection of marine benthic habitats in the Pacific islands. A case study of Guam ArchiMer
Gawel, Mj.
Guam consists of a single main island surrounded by shallow fringing coral reefs. The marine species and ecology of Guam's coral reefs have been studied extensively, especially through programs of the University of Guam's Marine Laboratory. In addition to overfishing and destructive fishing practices, the marine benthic communities of Guam have been damaged by major storm waves; loss of corals to crown of thorns starfish predation; damage by recreational swimmers, divers and watercraft operators; grounding of ships and pollutant discharges of sewage and of stormwater. But the most serious damage is due to accelerated siltation, sedimentation and turbidity due to erosion related to land use practices. Steps are being taken to protect Guam's coral reefs and...

Seamount egg-laying grounds of the deep-water skate Bathyraja richardsoni ArchiMer
Henry, L. -a.; Stehmann, M. F. W.; De Clippele, L.; Findlay, H. S.; Golding, N.; Roberts, J. M..
Highly localized concentrations of elasmobranch egg capsules of the deep-water skate Bathyraja richardsoni were discovered during the first remotely operated vehicle (ROV) survey of the Hebrides Terrace Seamount in the Rockall Trough, north-east Atlantic Ocean. Conductivity–temperature–depth profiling indicated that the eggs were bathed in a specific environmental niche of well-oxygenated waters between 4·20 and 4·55° C, and salinity 34·95–35·06, on a coarse to fine-grained sandy seabed on the seamount's eastern flank, whereas a second type of egg capsule (possibly belonging to the skate Dipturus sp.) was recorded exclusively amongst the reef-building stony coral Solenosmilia variabilis. The depths of both egg-laying habitats (1489–1580 m) provide a de...

Environmental anomalies, energetic reserves and fatty acid modifications in oysters coincide with an exceptional mortality event ArchiMer
Pernet, Fabrice; Barret, Jean; Marty, Claire; Moal, Jeanne; Le Gall, Patrik; Boudry, Pierre.
Mortality of oysters Crassostrea gigas occurred along the coasts of France during summer 2008, causing a serious crisis in French oyster production. During spring to summer 2008, 5 groups of 1-yr old oysters of different origins and ploidy levels deployed in the Thau lagoon (France) were sampled for biometrical and biochemical analyses; environmental parameters were monitored in the same area. Mortality occurred in 2 episodes: 13 May to 10 June and 24 June to 9 July. Wild-collected oysters showed mortality sooner than other groups but total overall mortality was 85% in all groups. Mortality occurred when seawater temperature was >19 degrees C during the reproductive season when energetic reserves of oysters were at their lowest. Energy reserve levels...

Test écotoxicologique sur microalgues et lecteur de plaques : mesures d'activités enzymatiques sur cellules in vivo. Application à l'évaluation de la qualité du milieu ArchiMer
Gilbert, Franck; Galgani, Francois.
A new method for the assessment of several contaminant effects on marine microalgae (Tetraselmis suesica, Skeletonema costatum) has been developped. The method is based on the measure of cells esterase activity using a fluorimetric stain, fluorescein diacetate (FDA). The experiments are performed in microplates using a fluorimetric microplate reader. The different steps of the experiments and the data processing are controlled by an original specific software. Application of the system for rapid ecotoxicological tests (determination of LC 50) and for assessment of environment quality by observation of water samples are proposed.

Mass mortality outbreaks (90-100%) in both juvenile and adult blue mussels were reported in 2014 along the Pertuis Charentais area of the French Atlantic coast. A series of studies were carried out to learn more about the phenomenon through detecting pathogens, describing environmental conditions and establishing the physiological status of the animals. Bacteria identif ied as belonging to the V. splendidus species were detected in dying mussels and seem able to cause mortality in blue mussels in the laboratory. Unusual environmental conditions (large amounts of fresh water, re-suspension of sediments during a series of storms, and a high renewal rate of specific water masses in Brittany’s Pertuis area) may be partially responsible for sparking the phenomen

Exposure to the Paralytic Shellfish Toxin Producer Alexandrium catenella Increases the Susceptibility of the Oyster Crassostrea gigas to Pathogenic Vibrios ArchiMer
Abi-khalil, Celina; Lopez-joven, Carmen; Abadie, Eric; Savar, Veronique; Amzil, Zouher; Laabir, Mohamed; Rolland, Jean-luc.
The multifactorial etiology of massive Crassostrea gigas summer mortalities results from complex interactions between oysters, opportunistic pathogens and environmental factors. In a field survey conducted in 2014 in the Mediterranean Thau Lagoon (France), we evidenced that the development of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella, which produces paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs), was concomitant with the accumulation of PSTs in oyster flesh and the occurrence of C. gigas mortalities. In order to investigate the possible role of toxic algae in this complex disease, we experimentally infected C. gigas oyster juveniles with Vibrio tasmaniensis strain LGP32, a strain associated with oyster summer mortalities, after oysters were exposed to Alexandrium...

Chemical environment of the hydrothermal mussel communities in the Lucky Strike and Menez Gwen vent fields, Mid Atlantic ridge ArchiMer
Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Caprais, Jean-claude; Riso, Ricardo; Kerouel, Roger; Aminot, Alain.
Water samples were collected around the communities of a hydrothermal mussel, Bathymodiolus sp., in the Lucky Strike (1700 m depth) and Menez Gwen (850 m depth) areas, Mid Atlantic Ridge, and analysed for chemical constituents. The environment surrounding the organisms consists in sea water (88 to 100%) mixed with hydrothermal fluid with pH between 6.2 and 8, Sigma S (H2S + HS-) concentrations from 0 to 62 mu mol l(-1). High dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations suggest a highly productive ecosystem. Production of ammonium and DOG, consumption of nitrate and sulfide in the vicinity of the organisms are among the environmental changes found in relation with local biological activity. Concentrations of Cu and Pb were high, implying that the organisms...

Bilan des connaissances sur la qualité de l'eau dans la zone du polder conchylicole de Bouin - Projet LEAUPOLD ArchiMer
Hatt, Philippe-jacques; Stavrakakis, Christophe; Buchet, Vincent; Dupuy, Beatrice.

Influence of preoperative food and temperature conditions on pearl biogenesis in Pinctada margaritifera ArchiMer
Latchere, Oihana; Le Moullac, Gilles; Gaertner-mazouni, Nabila; Fievet, Julie; Magre, Kevin; Saulnier, Denis.
Trophic conditions and water temperature strongly influence bivalve physiological processes and metabolism. In black-lip pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera, these parameters have been shown to affect shell biomineralization. The present study investigated the effect of preoperative food level (i.e., microalgal concentration) and temperature on pearl biomineralization. Donor and recipient oysters were conditioned at different levels of food and temperature during the preoperative phase to evaluate the influence of these factors on 1) pearl retention rate (grafting success), 2) expression of genes involved in biomineralization in the mantle and pearl sac and 3) pearl quality traits. Our study confirmed the influence of both microalgal concentration and...

The pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera) aquaculture in French Polynesia and the indirect impact of long-distance transfers and collection-culture site combinations on pearl quality traits ArchiMer
Ky, Chin-long; Broustal, Floriane; Potin, Dan; Lo, Cedrik.
In French Polynesia, the P. margaritifera pearl aquaculture industry is spread over a vast area, as large as Europe. All the oysters for this the highly economically important activity are supplied from just a few collection lagoons, but they are grown in numerous sites across three archipelagos (Gambier, Society and Tuamotu). Many oyster transfers thus indirectly bring about grafting combinations mixing different geographic origins and production sites. This study aims to examine the impact of such graft combinations on cultured pearl quality traits. For this, six homogeneous and standardised experimental graft combinations (N = 6197) were conducted at commercial scale in the two growing locations the most frequently used in French Polynesia: Arutua atoll...

This study investigated the effects of age (first or second summer of life) and environment (three study sites on French coasts) on summer mortality in Crassostrea gigas, using three generations of oysters produced during the Morest project. For each generation, two groups of oysters, selected either as 'resistant' (R) or 'susceptible' (S) to summer mortality at the age of 6 months in Rivière d'Auray (RA, South Brittany), were evaluated. In Ronce (Marennes-Oléron Bay) and RA, R oysters had low mortality during their first and second summers, while mortality was higher during the second summer in Baie des Veys (BDV, Normandy). In RA, S oysters exhibited higher mortality during their first summer than during their second, while the opposite result was found...
