Equine metabolic syndrome in Colombian creole horse: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Castillo,C.A.; Jaramillo,C.; Loaiza,M.J.; Blanco,R..
ABSTRACT The equine metabolic syndrome is a condition that can be recognized because of obesity, insulin resistance and laminitis. Genetic factors could play a role in the occurrence of this syndrome. Certain breeds such as ponies (including the South American creole horses) have a lower sensibility to insulin and a higher prevalence of hyperinsulinemia. The environment and management conditions, such as overfeeding and lack of exercise are factors that bring a propensity for obesity. The adipose tissue works as an endocrine organ producing hormones (adipokines or adipocytokines) that affect the horse´s metabolism. The objective of this report is to describe the first case report of a Colombian creole mare with a metabolic syndrome, diagnosed by means of...

Characterization of mesenchymal stem cells derived from equine adipose tissue Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Carvalho,A.M.; Yamada,A.L.M.; Golim,M.A.; Álvarez,L.E.C.; Jorge,L.L.; Conceição,M.L.; Deffune,E.; Hussni,C.A.; Alves,A.L.G..
Stem cell therapy has shown promising results in tendinitis and osteoarthritis in equine medicine. The purpose of this work was to characterize the adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AdMSCs) in horses through (1) the assessment of the capacity of progenitor cells to perform adipogenic, osteogenic and chondrogenic differentiation; and (2) flow cytometry analysis using the stemness related markers: CD44, CD90, CD105 and MHC Class II. Five mixed-breed horses, aged 2-4 years-old were used to collect adipose tissue from the base of the tail. After isolation and culture of AdMSCs, immunophenotypic characterization was performed through flow cytometry. There was a high expression of CD44, CD90 and CD105, and no expression of MHC Class II markers. The...

Rolling technique for treatment of left displacement of the large colon in horses: 11 cases (2004-2009) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Canola,P.A.; Lacerda Neto,J.C.; Canola,J.C..
The left displacement of the large colon, a condition that commonly occurs in horses, has two clinical manifestations. Different treatments including medical treatment, rolling the horse under general anesthesia or surgical correction have been recommended. The diagnosis can often be made by rectal examination and confirmed by percutaneous ultrasonography. During the period between 2004 and 2009, 11 horses were treated for left displacement of the large colon by rolling the horses under general anesthesia, using a slightly different technique than the ones previously described. The clinical case selection was based on rectal palpation confirmed with ultrasonogram. Nine animals were successfully treated and two had to be submitted to surgery after three...

Células mononucleares da medula óssea no tratamento da ruptura total dos tendões flexores e ligamento suspensor do boleto em equino Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Yamada,A.L.M.; Oliveira,P.G.G.; Carvalho,A.M.; Watanabe,M.J.; Hussni,C.A.; Alves,A.L.G..
This paper describes the case of a horse treated in a Teaching Veterinary Hospital. The sutures of the flexor apparatus associated with cell therapy, the stem cell, provided a rapid response of repair compared to other cases treated in routine of the Hospital. The association of conventional treatments with the mononuclear fraction of bone marrow significantly contributed to the reduction of the hyperextension of the metatarsophalangeal joint. Ultrasound images showed rapid fill cell and decrease in inflammation.

Brucella spp. in equines slaughtered in the south region of Brazil Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Santos,R.F.; Silva,G.C.P.; Assis,N.A.; Mathias,L.A..
ABSTRACT Bacteria of the genus Brucella are widespread in many countries. These microorganisms can infect humans and many wild and domestic animal species. These bacteria have zoonotic potential, and can cause economic and public health problems since they can be transmitted by direct contact with sick animals, through consumption of contaminated milk, raw meat and its derivatives (Soares et al., 2015). Brucellosis is considered a chronic evolving disease, unusual in horses, predominantly caused by Brucella abortus. However, it is not characterized by reproductive disorders in horses, but primarily by abscess in the cervical region, bursa, tendons, and joints. Transmission is likely to occur via ingestion of contaminated water and pastures, especially in...

Melo,M.I.V.; Henry,M.; Beker,A.R.C.L..
The hypoosmotic test (HO) was used to evaluate plasmatic membrane integrity of equine chilled semen and to estimate the correlation between the results of the HO test and those from applied routine exams of semen. The semen of seven stallions was preserved at 5ºC in three different extenders. Each ejaculate was diluted in three extenders, Kenney (K), Baken with 3% of egg yolk (B3) and Baken with 10% of egg yolk (B10), and chilled at 5ºC. The total motility (MT), progressive motility (MP), spermatic vigor (V), normal spermatic morphology (NOR) and HO test were used to evaluate semen immediately after collection and at 24 hour-intervals. Spermatic longevity was defined as the time taken to the progressive motility to decline under 10%. Semen diluted in B3...

Identification of a historic horse ecotype analyzing speech content in central Brazil Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Silva,D.C.; Silva,M.C.; Goulart,F.F.; Cruz,A.S. da; Moura,M.I.; Fioravanti,M.C.S.; Sereno,J.R.B.; Cruz,A.D. da.
ABSTRACT This study represents a first attempt to rescue germplasm of a traditional domestic equine cited in early Iberian and South American literature as Curraleiro horse. As an effort to identify and possibly characterize this type of horse we accessed traditional knowledge in strategic rural areas. Most areas were configured by hinterland settlements founded by runaway slave communities from the sixteenth century. Twenty interviews were conducted and analyzed using classical Speech Content Analysis. As a result, five response categories were recognized: 1) Identification and location of Curraleiro horses; 2) Characterization of Curraleiro horses; 3) Historical aspects; 4) Curraleiro horse conservation prospects and 5) Sanitary and productive aspects of...

Biometrics of hoof balance in equids Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Souza,A.F.; Kunz,J.R.; Laus,R.; Moreira,M.A.; Muller,T.R.; Fonteque,J.H..
ABSTRACT Differences in hoof balance between horses, mules and donkeys were identified in order to form more specific considerations for proper management of the animals. Measurements of the natural dimensions of hooves in sixty animals were used: 20 horses from the Crioulo breed, 20 mules and 20 donkeys from the Pêga breed. Liveweight was estimated using the correlation equations in each species by heart girth. Using a caliper rule, tape measure and hoof gauge, measurements of the length and width of the frog, hoof height, angle of heel, medial and lateral dorsal length, angle of the toe and crown circumference of the hooves of forelimbs and hindlimb were taken. Within each group the hooves of the hindlimbs exhibited narrower measurements than the hooves...

Detection of equine herpesvirus 1 DNA in a single embryo and in horse semen by polymerase chain reaction Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Carvalho,R.; Passos,L.M.F.; Oliveira,A.M.; Henry,M.; Martins,A.S..
The genome of one equine embryo and three equine semen specimens collected from a Brazilian farm were tested by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the presence of EHV-1 and EHV-4-specific timidine kinase (TK) sequences. The PCR detected specific EHV-1 TK gene sequences in all samples tested. The peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) of the embryo donor mare also was amplified by EHV-1 TK primers. Infectious virus was not recovered from any specimens. The animals did not show any clinical signal of EHV-1 or EHV-4 infections. EHV-4 was not detected in the studied specimens. The results indicate that PCR was more sensitive than virus isolation in cell culture for detecting EHV-1 in semen of carrier horses.

ABSTRACT The aim of this report is to describe a case of marked osseous metaplasia in the placenta associated with abortion in a mare. A 19-year-old Campolina mare with a history of multiple parturitions and absence of reproductive failure, aborted a fetus with approximately six months of gestation. There were no gross changes in the fetus and the placenta. Microscopically, there was multifocal replacement of fetal connective mesenchyme of the chorionic villi with well differentiated and partially mineralized osseous tissue (confirmed by von Kossa staining). To further characterize the collagenous component of the lesion, sections of the placenta were stained with Masson’s trichrome and Picrosirius red. Osseous tissue deposition had abundance of type I...
