Effects of continuous vs interval exercise training on oxygen uptake efficiency slope in patients with coronary artery disease BJMBR
Prado,D.M.L.; Rocco,E.A.; Silva,A.G.; Rocco,D.F.; Pacheco,M.T.; Silva,P.F.; Furlan,V..
The oxygen uptake efficiency slope (OUES) is a submaximal index incorporating cardiovascular, peripheral, and pulmonary factors that determine the ventilatory response to exercise. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of continuous exercise training and interval exercise training on the OUES in patients with coronary artery disease. Thirty-five patients (59.3±1.8 years old; 28 men, 7 women) with coronary artery disease were randomly divided into two groups: continuous exercise training (n=18) and interval exercise training (n=17). All patients performed graded exercise tests with respiratory gas analysis before and 3 months after the exercise-training program to determine ventilatory anaerobic threshold (VAT), respiratory compensation...

Effect of exercise on the caloric intake of breast cancer patients undergoing treatment BJMBR
Battaglini,C.L.; Mihalik,J.P.; Bottaro,M.; Dennehy,C.; Petschauer,M.A.; Hairston,L.S.; Shields,E.W..
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an exercise intervention on the total caloric intake (TCI) of breast cancer patients undergoing treatment. A secondary purpose was to determine whether or not a relationship existed between changes in TCI, body fat composition (%BF), and fatigue during the study, which lasted 6 months. Twenty females recently diagnosed with breast cancer, scheduled to undergo chemotherapy or radiation, were assigned randomly to an experimental (N = 10) or control group (N = 10). Outcome measures included TCI (3-day food diary), %BF (skinfolds), and fatigue (revised Piper Fatigue Scale). Each exercise session was conducted as follows: initial cardiovascular activity (6-12 min), followed by stretching (5-10 min),...

Voluntary wheel running: patterns and physiological effects in mice BJMBR
Manzanares,G.; Brito-da-Silva,G.; Gandra,P.G..
Exercise can prevent and improve the pathophysiology of diseases and promote healthy aging. Thus, understanding the mechanisms that regulate the beneficial effects of exercise may lead to the development of new strategies to enhance quality of life and to counteract chronic diseases. Voluntary wheel running is an interesting model to study the effects of exercise in mice. Compared to forced treadmill exercise, voluntary wheel running presents several advantages such as: 1) running pattern is similar to natural running behavior of mice; 2) it is performed under non-stressed conditions, according to the rhythmicity of the animal; 3) it does not require direct interference from the researcher, and can be easily applied in long-term studies. Mice run...

Evolution of potential biomarkers of acute muscle injury after physical exercise BJPS
Chielle,Eduardo Ottobelle; Granella,Lucilene Wildner; Maziero,Jorlana Stacke; Vidigal,Tiago Mateus Andrade; Mallmann,Bárbara Lidiane Kummer; Karal,Jaison.
Skeletal muscle injury is a frequent event and diagnosis using the classical blood markers sometimes produces unsatisfactory results. Therefore, objective of the study was to detect new biomarkers in plasma, saliva and urine in response to acute muscle damage induced by physical exercise. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 27 American football players. Before the physical exercises (T0), 60 minutes (T1) and 24 hours (T2) after physical exercise, was determined the clinical, biochemical and molecular parameters, including ADA, TBARS, leukocytes, lymphocytes and comet assay. The serum ADA was significantly higher in T1 and T2, in the urine there was a significant increase in T1, in the saliva there was no significant differences. There was an...

Exercise training session-induced metabolic acidosis in barrel racing horses Ciência Rural
Gomes,Cláudio Luís Nina; Alves,Andressa Mendes; Ribeiro Filho,José Dantas; Moraes Junior,Felipe de Jesus; Chaves,Ricardo de Macedo; Aranha,Rosany Maria Cunha; Fucuta,Rodrigo Santos; Ribeiro,Bruna Maria.
ABSTRACT: In horses, acid-base balance disorders are common after intense exercise, with metabolic acidosis being the most common after high intensity and short duration exercise. Understanding the processes that cause them is fundamental for procedures, which aimed to improve the physical fitness of horses for athletic purposes, with fewer changes in homeostasis. The present study assessed the effect of barrel racing on acid base balance in Quarter Horse, at the following times: T0 - immediately before training; T1 - immediately after the end of the second course; T2 - one hour after the end of the second course. In T1, there was decrease (P<0.05) in the pH, HCO3 -, pCO2, cBase, tCO2 and strong ion difference concentrations, while the plasma lactate...

Occurrence of gastric ulcers in horses exercised on a treadmill Ciência Rural
Ribeiro,Gesiane; Silva,Luis Cláudio Lopes Correia da; Belli,Carla Bargi; Vargas,Leonardo Paiao; Piffer,Maria Letícia Tescaro; Mirian,Maurício; Souza,Vanessa Aparecida Feijó de; Fernandes,Wilson Roberto.
ABSTRACT: The most frequently causes of gastric ulcers in horses are fasting, feeding type and management, as well as administration of certain medications. More recently, exercise has also been identified as an important factor in the development of gastric lesions in athlete horses. The purpose of the present study was to assess whether treadmill exercise predisposes the horses to the occurrence of gastric ulcers. Five Arabian horses underwent a twelve-week training period on a treadmill and a gastroscopic evaluation before and after the training period. All animals showed gastric lesions after the training period. Based on these results, it is concluded that Arabian horses undergoing exercise on a treadmill may develop gastric lesions varying in number...

Yeast as a feed additive for training horses Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Rezende,Adalgiza Souza Carneiro de; Trigo,Pablo; Lana,Ângela Maria Quintão; Santiago,Juliano Martins; Silva,Vinicius Pimentel; Montijano,Francisco Castejón.
This research analyses the yeast supplementation effect on the digestibility of nutrients and metabolic performance in training horses. Twelve horses were assigned into 2 groups: Pr (20 g of probiotics daily per horse) and control. The diet consisted of roughage (haylage) and commercial rations and all horses were trained for 6 weeks. LIPE® indicator was used during 7 days and feces collected for five days to determine nutrient digestibility. DM, CP, DE, P, NDF, ADF, HCEL and lignin were determined. All horses were subjected to incremental ergospirometry test before and at the end of training. Horses that received live yeast showed an increase (p<0.05) of 4.1% in the digestibility of HCEL. After training, both horse groups presented higher tolerance to...
