Morphological characters of adults of the treehopper subfamily Nicomiinae Haupt, 1929 (Hemiptera, Membracidae) including seven genera (Eudonica gen. nov.; Euwalkeria Goding, 1926; Holdgatiella Evans, 1962; Nicomia Stål, 1858; Nodonica Dietrich, McKamey& Deitz, 2001; Stalomia gen. nov.; and Tolania Stål, 1858) and 22 species (16 new) are described and illustrated. Keys are provided for genera and for species of Euwalkeria, Holdgatiella, and Nicomia. Nomenclatural changes, based on study of the primary type material of 15 species, include three new combinations, one new synonymy, and reinstatement of one junior synonym. Bandaromimus Linnavuori, 1959 is reported for the first time in Brazil. Two new species are described: Bandaromimus matogrossensis sp. nov. (Brazil, Mato Grosso) and Bandaromimus insularis sp. nov. (Brazil, Paraná). The female of Bandaromimus parvicauda Linnavuori & Heller, 1961 is described and the illustrations of male genitalia is also added.

The tribe Acutalini Fowler is redescribed as well as the genera Acutalis Fairmaire, Euritea Stål, and Thrasymedes Kirkaldy. Linnavuori, 1959 described the genus and species Andanus bimaculatus based on four specimens collected in Peru, Madre de Díos. In examining the type-material, we found that it was formed by two species belonging to a different genus. The female specimen (alotype) and one of the two males paratypes, that Linnavuori used to dissect the genitalia, is here described as Perundanus raunoi, gen.n., sp.n. Fora better characterization of the genus Andanus Linnavuori and A. bimaculatus Linnavuori , both are redescribed.

The plant-vigor hypothesis (PVH) predicts that females of galling insects preferentially oviposit on the most vigorous plant or plant modules, where their offspring performance is highest. We tested the PVH on Neopelma baccharidis Buckhardt (Homoptera: Psyllidae) and Rhoasphondylia friburgensis Tavares (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) which induce galls on Baccharis dracunculifolia D.C. The green aphid Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) is an important pest of Graminae. Samples of this aphid were collected at three environmentally distinct Brazilian localities, Passo Fundo (RS), Jaguariuna (SP) and Dourados (MS). Alatae and apterous viviparous forms were reared on the BR-35 wheat (Triticum aestivum) strain under controlled laboratory conditions and studied as to their variability in measures of body size and production of progeny. Univariate (ANOVA) and multivariate (canonical discriminant functions) techniques were used to evaluate differences among the three populations. Analysis of the honeydew from scale insects Stigmacoccus sp. and Coccus hesperidium (L.) were carried out by paper chromatography, FAB-MS and GC-MS. The results showed three components (tri-, tetra- and penta-saccharides) which were composed by 1,4 glucose(s) linked to the glucose of sucrose. The findings therefore imply significant and novel metabolic transformations of sugars by the insect and/or microbial symbionts. From these results, structures and common names as "Stigmatriose, Stigmatetraose and Stigmapentose" were proposed for these oligosaccharides because they were found initially in Stigmacoccus sp. honeydew.
