Seafood Trade and Market Access: Threats and Opportunities AgEcon
Leadbitter, Duncan.
Humans have been trading seafood and seafood products since time immemorial. This trade has commonly crossed national boundaries, but the scale of trade has increased markedly in the past twenty years. By and large the distilled view of nations is that trade is good and there has been considerable international pressure to encourage and facilitate trade. As trade has increased, so too have the debates over the costs and benefits due to the changes to incomes, wealth distribution, cultures and social cohesion that this trade has driven. Whilst trade has undeniable impacts on natural resources such as fisheries, it is not the sole and ultimate reason for the perilous state of many fisheries in the world. The sustainability of fisheries is ultimately...

A survey of the assessments of the effectiveness of Preferential Trade Agreements using gravity models AgEcon
Cardamone, Paola.
This paper reviews the empirical literature using a gravity model to assess the impact on trade of Preferential Trade Agreements (PTAs) and provides a critical analysis of the choices made to carry out the estimations. With respect to the effectiveness of PTAs, the main result that emerges from the review is that PTAs tend to foster trade between the countries involved. However, two empirical issues appear relevant. First, the use of dummy variables to proxy PTAs does not adequately describe the preferences granted and can be misleading. Indeed, the use of dummies does not allow to discern among the different preferential trade policy instruments used as well as to measure the level of the trade preferences granted. As a result, dummies do not allow to...

THE PATTERN OF BILATERAL TRADE USING A DYNAMIC GRAVITY EQUATION AgEcon
Kim, Mina; Cho, Guedae; Koo, Won W..
Using a dynamic gravity equation, we show that the national product differentiation model explains food and agricultural trade, while the product differentiation model explains large-scale manufacturing trade for both short- and long-run. We provide reasons of discrepancy from Head and Ries (2001) in the short-run, and illustrate the positive impacts of world income growth on bilateral trades.

THE TRANSFORMATION OF MARKET PLAYERS ON THE DEMAND-SIDE OF THE GRAIN MARKET AgEcon
Kemenyne Horvath, Zsuzsanna.
The aim of the study is to review the vertical and horizontal reshuffling that took place in a specific area of the Hungarian grain product cycle, i.e. raw material production, and its effect on the demand-side power structure. The answers derived from questionnaires and in-depth interviews allowed the classification of buyers using cluster analysis, and also the modeling of their decisions during the price negotiation. The completed analysis shows us that on the grain market, price leaders are primarily among the large trading companies and holdings, which can be attributed to their size, storage capacity, logistical capabilities and strategy. Processing (mills, feed mixers, seed-sellers), integrator, retail and other companies on the grain market are...

DEVELOPMENT OF THE AGRICULTURAL CROPS TRADE SECTOR OF SUDAN UNDER THE INCREASING WORLD FOOD PRICES AgEcon
Elgali, Mohamed B.; Mustafa, Rajaa H.; Bauer, Siegfried.
The agricultural trade of the Sudan is expected to develop under the recent dramatic increase of world food prices. Sudan as one of the developing countries and as price taker on the world agricultural market has been affected greatly by the world price increase. This paper aims at studying the impact of the increasing world food prices on developments of the agricultural crops trade sector of Sudan. In this paper a multimarket model is used as the main tool to estimate the increase of the world food prices on the crop trade sector. Multi-market analysis is a tool for simulating the effects of agricultural price policies on outcomes considered of interest to policy makers. The model under consideration takes the normal specification of a standard partial...

ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS OF THE AUSTRALIA-U.S. FREE TRADE AGREEMENT FOR U.S. DAIRY MARKETS AND DOMESTIC DAIRY FARM PROGRAMS AgEcon
Alston, Julian M.; Sumner, Daniel A.; Balagtas, Joseph Valdes; Brunke, Henrich.
We develop a simulation model to analyze the effects on U.S. milk markets of an Australia-U.S. free trade agreement. An important contribution to the literature is the derivation of explicit supply and demand relationships for milk components, which allows an analysis of long-term production, consumption, and trade patterns that is not tied to specific products. Simulations indicate that increased imports from Australia, resulting from bilateral trade liberalization, would result in modest reductions in U.S. milk prices and production.

Exchange Rate Volatility and Bilateral Agricultural Trade Flows: The Case of the United States and OECD Countries AgEcon
Kafle, Kashi R.; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
This study documents the effect of exchange rate volatility and the real exchange rate on bilateral agricultural exports, imports and total trade (exports + imports) flows between the United States and OECD countries. The effect of exchange rate volatility is estimated both separately from and in combination with the real exchange rate. In addition, implementation of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and use of the Euro as a national currency (Euro) are included as dummy variables and their effects on trade flows are also determined. A panel data set, which contains 28 cross-sections and 1148 observations, is used for bilateral trade flows between the United States and OECD countries from 1970 to 2010. With an empirical model based on a gravity equation, the...

Euro-Mediterranean Supply Chain Developments and Trends in Trade Structures, in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Sector AgEcon
Kalaitzis, Prodromos; van Dijk, Gert; Baourakis, George.
Supply chains for fresh fruit and vegetables, are going through considerable re-shaping phase worldwide. This study analyses the trends which impose those changes and focuses mainly at the wholesale and export trading of the Euro-Mediterranean supply chain (namely, on how fruit and vegetable producer, wholesale and export firms react to the market forces that direct them). Producer organizations and wholesale firms one the one hand of The Netherlands, Germany and other EU member countries, and of Non- EU Member Mediterranean countries, on the other hand, are the subject of this study. Two graphical representation of the Dutch and the German supply chains respectively are presented here as the main instrument to demonstrate the dynamics of the sectors...

FONTES DE CRESCIMENTO DAS EXPORTAÇÕES DO COMPLEXO SOJA BRASILEIRO AgEcon

BALANCING FOOD SAFETY AND RISK: DO DRUG RESIDUE LIMITS AFFECT INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN BEEF? AgEcon
Wilson, John S.; Otsuki, Tsunehiro; Majumdar, Baishali.
There have been a number of high profile food safety disputes in trade over the past decade. These include the widely publicized dispute at the World Trade Organization between the U.S. and EU over hormone treated beef. Consumers in some industrialized countries have also expressed concern over the health implications of consuming beef produced with antibiotics and other artificial supplements. Developing countries are affected in a significant way in both how disputes are settled, as well as the balance between risk and safety reflected in how standards are set. This paper examines the impact of drug residue standards on trade in beef and trade affect of setting harmonized international standards. We find that if international standards set by Codex...

Japan-New Zealand Trade and Fishery Frictions: Some Characteristics and Implications AgEcon
Okada, Yoshinori.
The greatest friction in trade and fishery between Japan and New Zealand was the Total Economic Relationship, which was insisted by the PM of NZ. NZ wanted to export dairy foods in exchange for admitting fishing. Both governments experienced a long and tough negotiation. Recently frictions have happened in various sectors, such as Environmental and Food Customs. The friction looks broad and dangerous. In spite of the emotional reactions, however, I don't think that is a serious problem. Both sides should know the importance and the character. If both sides do not respond correctly, trade will stagnate in the future.

Growing Demand for Animal-Protein-Source Products in Indonesia: Trade Implications AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F..
New elasticities were estimated from Indonesia's 1996, 1999, and 2002 National Socio-Economic Survey, or SUSENAS, data using a double-hurdle demand specification. The estimates suggest that major changes in Indonesian household diets are expected in the coming years, as income growth is sustained and as urbanization proceeds at a fast pace. The consumption 'trading-up' pattern for animal-protein source products observed in many countries may also occur in Indonesia. In this particular case, households will shift from fish to dairy and meat products. The trade impacts of this emerging consumption pattern will be determined by the cost of adjustment in Indonesia's domestic productive capacity and the influence of the country's predominantly Islamic tradition.
