Development of a lipid-enrichment technique for <i>Artemia</i> juveniles produced in an intensive system for use in marine larviculture OMA
Dhont, J.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Although there exists an obvious inclination to replace live larval food by formulated feeds, <i>Artemia nauplii</i> are still essential in the larviculture of marine fish species. So far, on-grown <i>Artemia</i> are rarely used in larviculture although they offer several advantages over <i>Artemia nauplii</i>: e.g. they contain a higher individual protein and energy content thus improving the fish larvae's energy budget; an equal amount of live food is reached with far less individuals thus a considerable saving of <i>Artemia</i> cysts; their composition of (n-3) highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) may easily be improved by applying enrichment techniques. This study deals with the development of...

Production and application of on-grown <i>Artemia</i> in freshwater ornamental fish farm OMA
Lim, L.C.; Soh, A.; Dhert, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
This paper describes a pilot culture system for the production of on-grown <i>Artemia</i> in freshwater ornamental fish farms. The system had 21 culture units, each consisting essentially of three components: an oval-shaped raceway, an air-water lift system and two waste collectors. Using artificial seawater at 20 ppt for culture and at a mean production rate of 3 kg/m3 of water in a 12-day cycle, the system had a production capacity of 8 metric tons of on- grown <i>Artemia</i> a year. Biochemical analyses were preformed to evaluate the nutritional value of the on-grown <i>Artemia</i> against three conventional live feeds, viz. live <i>Artemia</i> nauplii, live <i>Moina</i>...

Palatability enhancing nutrients for the European eel, <i>Anguilla anguilla</i> L. OMA
Pacolet, W.; Reynders, K.; Ollevier, F.P..
Feeding experiments with European glass eels <i>Anguilla anguilla</i> L. demonstrated a high degree of attractiveness for the natural diets Tubifix and cod roe. Previous experiments had indicated that incorporation of bovine spleen and/or blood into paste feeds significantly improved the growth rate and survival. To increase feed consumption, the effect of some basic components available from the current generation of chemo-attractants were evaluated. Using a modified Omission Test Procedure, we focused on monosodiumglutamate, betaine, the nucleotides IMP and GMP, and fractions of cattle blood. These components were incorporated into non-attractive casein-based test diets and administered following standardized procedures to intensively...

Promising results in the seed culturing of the Manila clam <i>Tapes semidecussata</i> with a manipulated yeast product as a partial substitute for algae OMA
Albentosa, M.; Naessens, E.; Léger, P.; Coutteau, P.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The results are presented of preliminary trials conducted with <i>Tapes semiducussata</i> spat using manipulated yeast products as substitutes for unicellular algae in their diets. Findings showed that spat growth increased with increasing amounts of algae in the artificial diet; growth was very poor when no algae were offered at all. It is concluded that manipulated yeasts may replace a substantial part of the algae in clam diets, but complete replacement is not possible, yet.

Apparent digestibility of ingredients in diets for Salminus brasiliensis PAB
Braga,Luís Gustavo Tavares; Borghesi,Ricardo; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon.
The objective of this work was to determine the nutritional value of different protein sources for "dourado" (Salminus brasiliensis). Thirty juveniles per group (33.51±1.4 g) were hand fed on a reference diet (70%) added of tested ingredients (30%) and chromium oxide III (0.1%). Apparent digestibility coefficients of the gross energy (ADC GE), crude protein (ADC CP) and amino acids of the tested ingredients were evaluated. Corn gluten meal yielded the best results for ADC GE and ADC CP (95.7 and 96.9%, respectively) amongst plant ingredients. Spray-dried blood meal yielded the best values of ADC GE and ADC CP amongst animal ingredients (94.1 and 96.3%, respectively). Wheat bran yielded poorest ADCs coefficients (77 for ADC GE and 88.2% for ADC CP).

The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of different grazing periods on beef animal production and on wheat forage and grain yield. The experiment was carried out in Pato Branco, PR, Brazil. Six grazing periods were evaluated (0, 21, 42, 63, 84, and 105 days) on dual-purpose wheat cultivar BRS Tarumã. Purunã steers, with average live weight of 162 kg and ten months of age, were kept under continuous grazing using a variable stocking rate, in order to maintain the established sward height of 25 cm. Greater increases in total animal gain (TAG) occurred with longer grazing periods. However, there was little increase after 63 days (490 kg ha-1), and TAG decreased from 552 to 448 kg ha-1 between 84 and 105 days. Grain yield decreased from 2,830...
