The past intersessional period has been marked by a very significant change in the fields of networking, and electronic publication of data and information. The Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) have attracted major attention and have become the way to do business for a broad community of data and information users who did not previously have the means to do such exchanges, either locally or globally. Since IODE-XIV in October 1992, a large number of IODE data and information centres have begun to use the Internet and have established various types of servers to display and deliver data, information, and services. The rate of advancement of technology is something that has to be noted and taken into account by IODE. If one thinks back to October 1992,... |

During the intersessional period, the training component of IODE was marked by continuous development and regional expansion. As it was recommended during IODE-XV, the regional approach laid the foundation for IODE-TEMA activities. Centres of excellence for providing regular training were identified in some regions (Japan, Russia). More than 15 short-training courses (usually up to two weeks) were arranged in Japan, Denmark, Thailand, Iran, Russia (Gelendzhik, Obninsk), India, Argentina, Kenya, South Africa, France, Greece, Brazil. During these courses, more than 100 participants received training in oceanographic data management. The programmes of the courses covered different aspects of data and information management and were also used for making local... |

The main objectives of the survey were the following: • To map the distribution and estimate the abundance of the most commercially important pelagic species in the Namibia-Angola transboundary area (15°50-19°00’), following the survey design utilized in Angolan waters (6 n.mi spacing between transect lines), with special emphasis on the two horse mackerel Cunene horse mackerel (Trachurus trecae) and Cape horse mackerel (Trachurus capensis), sardine “Pilchard” (Sardinops sagax) and other small pelagic species, including anchovy (Engraulis capensis) and round herring (Etrumeus whiteheadi). • To map the distributions and estimate the abundance of the same species in central Namibia south to Dune Point (20°15’ S), following the established survey design with... |

The purpose of the Commission is to promote international cooperation and to coordinate programmes in research, services, and capacity building, in order to learn about the nature and resources of the ocean and coastal areas and to apply that knowledge for the improvement of management, sustainable development, the protection of the marine environment, and the decisionmaking processes of its Member States. The Commission will collaborate with international organizations concerned with the work of the Commission, and especially with those organizations of the United Nations system which are willing and prepared to contribute to the purpose and functions of the Commission and/or to seek advice and cooperation in the field of ocean and coastal area scientific... |

IOC for UNESCO. |
The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO was founded in 1960 to promote international cooperation and to coordinate programmes in research, services and capacity-building, in order to learn more about the nature and resources of the ocean and coastal areas and to apply that knowledge for the improvement of management, sustainable development, the protection of the marine environment, and the decision-making processes of its Member States. IOC plays a key role as a global broker involving the promotion of science innovation, nurturing programmes, transferring, disseminating and sharing information, data and knowledge, best practices, assessment and scientific services related to Oceanography. This process is done in an inclusive and... |

Activities of ODINCARSA project began with the First Planning workshop held in Guayaquil, Ecuador between 24-26 October 2001, hosted by the Oceanographic Institute of the Navy (INOCAR), with participants attending the meeting from fourteen countries in the Caribbean and South America regions. The meeting reviewed the ocean data and information management capacity available in the regions, identified capacity building requirements and developed a comprehensive work plan to develop a regional cooperative network for the management and exchange of oceanographic data and information in the regions.(Report available as IOC Workshop Report No. 177) During the First Planning Workshop Mr Rodney Martínez Gûingla (Ecuador) was nominated by the participants in that... |

In 1971 Sweden established an IOC Designated National Agency located in the Swedish National Board of Fisheries, Hydrographic Department. A major reason for the establishment of the DNA was the increasing awareness of the eutrophication problems in the Baltic. In 1985 the Hydrographic Department (including the DNA) was relocated to SMHI and changed the name to Oceanographic Laboratory. SMHI is the largest producer of oceanographic data in Sweden. In 1994 the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency appointed the laboratory as “National Data Host for Physical and Chemical Oceanographic Data". In 1998 the laboratory was reorganized into Oceanographic Services and made responsible for all marine monitoring data produced in SMHI. |
