IODE-XV Report on Intersessional Activities of the Chairman of the IOC Committee on IODE OceanDocs
The past intersessional period has been marked by a very significant change in the fields of networking, and electronic publication of data and information. The Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) have attracted major attention and have become the way to do business for a broad community of data and information users who did not previously have the means to do such exchanges, either locally or globally. Since IODE-XIV in October 1992, a large number of IODE data and information centres have begun to use the Internet and have established various types of servers to display and deliver data, information, and services. The rate of advancement of technology is something that has to be noted and taken into account by IODE. If one thinks back to October 1992,...

Rodríguez Rubio, E.; Giraldo, A..

Tonini, M.H..
This dissertation analyses the oceanic circulation of the Norpatagonian Gulfs, a region of the Argentinean Sea that has long been recognized for the high productivity and biodiversity of the ecosystem. The study aims towards a systematic exploration of the physical processes that control the circulation using a high resolution three dimensional numerical model. To facilitate the dynamical understanding of the results our experimental strategy was to start with a constant density (barotropic) model forced by tides and winds, and to progress to a more complex case including density stratification generated by surface fluxes of heat and humidity. The main result that stems from the numerical experiments is that tidal forcing significantly contributes to the...

Guide to operational procedures for the collection and exchange of oceanographic data (bathy and tesac) OceanDocs
All nations are profoundly influenced by the world oceans in many ways - some direct and obvious, others indirect and more subtle. Even those countries without ocean coastline feel the influence of the ocean, for example, as it affects world-wide weather and climate and In the availability of foreign goods and access to distant markets. Some influences of the ocean are benefitial; others may be detrimental to human activities ; most are beyond our ability to control, except in very limited ways, but, forewarned with a knowledge of the state of the ocean and even a limited prediction of future trends, it may often be possible to maximize the beneficial effects and to avoid or guard effectively against those which could be detrimental. The Integrated Global...

IODE's Training Programme: An Overview OceanDocs
During the intersessional period, the training component of IODE was marked by continuous development and regional expansion. As it was recommended during IODE-XV, the regional approach laid the foundation for IODE-TEMA activities. Centres of excellence for providing regular training were identified in some regions (Japan, Russia). More than 15 short-training courses (usually up to two weeks) were arranged in Japan, Denmark, Thailand, Iran, Russia (Gelendzhik, Obninsk), India, Argentina, Kenya, South Africa, France, Greece, Brazil. During these courses, more than 100 participants received training in oceanographic data management. The programmes of the courses covered different aspects of data and information management and were also used for making local...

IODE National Report for Cuba OceanDocs

IODE National Report for Sweden OceanDocs
In 1971 Sweden established an IOC Designated National Agency located in the Swedish National Board of Fisheries, Hydrographic Department. A major reason for the establishment of the DNA was the increasing awareness of the eutrophication problems in the Baltic. In 1985 the Hydrographic Department (including the DNA) was relocated to SMHI and changed the name to Oceanographic Laboratory. SMHI is the largest producer of oceanographic data in Sweden. In 1994 the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency appointed the laboratory as “National Data Host for Physical and Chemical Oceanographic Data". In 1998 the laboratory was reorganized into Oceanographic Services and made responsible for all marine monitoring data produced in SMHI.
