THE EFFECTS OF CAP REFORM ON THE PERIURBAN AGRICULTURAL AREA IN THE PLAIN OF THE CITY OF ASSISI (CENTRAL ITALY) AgEcon
Torquati, Biancamaria; Giacche, Giulia; Taglioni, Chiara; Musotti, Francesco.
In periurban areas agriculture can assume a multifunctional role that includes landscape conservation, sustainable resource management, biodiversity conservation, leisure activities, and can also maintain adequate conditions in densely populated areas for a safe and habitable environment. This study investigates the effects of the introduction of single farm payment on the periurban agricultural area in the plain of the City of Assisi, an area with a strong landscape value. A survey was carried out to determine: changes in production, changes on farm incomes, structural adjustments, the level of multifunctionality of periurban agriculture. Moreover, a survey of 355 residents was made to assess their willingness to pay for some positive externalities of the...

Creating Carbon Offsets in Agriculture through No-Till Cultivation: A Meta-Analysis of Costs and Carbon Benefits AgEcon
Manley, James G.; van Kooten, G. Cornelis; Moeltner, Klaus; Johnson, Dale W..
Carbon terrestrial sinks are often seen as a low-cost alternative to fuel switching and reduced fossil fuel use for lowering atmospheric CO2. To determine whether this is true for agriculture, one meta-regression analysis (52 studies, 536 observations) examines the costs of switching from conventional tillage to no-till, while another (51 studies, 374 observations) compares carbon accumulation under the two practices. Costs per ton of carbon uptake are determined by combining the two results. The viability of agricultural carbon sinks is found to vary by region and crop, with no-till representing a low-cost option in some regions (costs of less than $10/tC), but a high-cost option in others (costs of $100-$400/tC). A particularly important finding is that...

Modelo Principal-Agente para contratos entre pequenos produtores e empresa exportadora de manga no Rio Grande do Norte AgEcon
Sampaio, Luciano Menezes Bezerra.
Fruit production is an activity of great importance in the Brazilian commercial balance and even more in the Northeastern region. Intermediation is a regular practice in the fruit exporting market due to existence of requirements, such as quality certificates, and of internal problems in production and commercialization, such as credit limitations and absence of product standardization. Large companies, cooperatives, associations and NGOs receive products from many small producers and export them together with their own products. In Northeast, it is common that the exporting agent offers contracts to producers that include technical, administrative and legal assistance plus input supply. This paper proposes a model, using the principal-agent approach of...

Feeding the Cities and Greenhouse Gas Emissions - Beyond the Food Miles Approach AgEcon
de Cara, Stephane; Fournier, Anne; Gaigne, Carl.
In this paper, we study the impact of urbanization on the location of agricultural production and the GHG emissions related to transportation activities. We develop an economic geography model where the location of agricultural activities and urban population are endogenous. We show that increasing agricultural yields induce the spatial concentration of agricultural production in the least urbanized region if agricultural transport costs are relatively low and in the most urbanized region otherwise. In addition, interregional trade in agricultural commodities is desirable to reduce GHG emissions, except when urban population is equally split between cities. However, the market may induce too much agglomeration of agricultural production when yields are...

Industry Speaks Reflections on the Irrational AgEcon
Gobbee, Jose E..
This article analyzes the various components of the current financial crisis and its implications for agriculture. While financial markets have been overrun by steep losses, violent price movements, and irrationality associated with a classic bubble, agricultural markets still have sound fundamentals and their underlying real assets may prove to be a safe haven during these trying times.

Improving Food Security in Africa: Highlights of 25 Years of Research, Capacity-Building, and Outreach. AgEcon
Food Security Group at Michigan State University.
Decades of research have led to substantially improved understanding of the nature of food insecurity. A combination of economic growth and targeted programs resulted in a steady fall (until the food crisis of 2007/08) in the percentage of the world’s population suffering from undernutrition (from 20% in 1990/92 to 16% in 2006). Yet over a billion people still face both chronic and/or transitory food insecurity due to long-standing problems of inadequate income, low-productivity in agricultural production and marketing, and related problems of poor health and absence of clean water. Assuring adequate food security for such a large share of the world’s population is increasingly challenging due to continuing resource degradation driven by a combination of...

THE IMPACT OF CAP REFORM ON ROMANIAN AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Alexandri, Cecilia; Luca, Lucian.
The paper attempts to evaluate, on the basis of two scenarios (moderate and radical), the effects of CAP reforming compared to the situation of current CAP scenario and its effects upon welfare. Direct payments for the large farms, some of them operating on thousands of hectares, cannot contribute to the objective of supporting farmers’ incomes. The solution for the modernization of rural areas seems to be their “urbanization”, through investments in infrastructure, development of community services and a move away from farming to other economic sectors.

NATIONAL IMPACTS OF CHANGES IN LIVESTOCK DISEASE SURVEILLANCE AgEcon
Hillberg Seitzinger, Ann; Paarlberg, Philip L.; Mathews, Kenneth H., Jr..
This research estimates the U.S. economic welfare effects of livestock disease surveillance. One type of surveillance considers livestock diseases already in the United States. Annual national economic welfare increases $1.4 billion on average compared with a Federal surveillance budget for endemic diseases of $300 million annually. Other surveillance deals with reducing the risk of foreign animal diseases entering and becoming established. The estimated annual gain to producers from surveillance for foreign animal diseases is $401 million dollars. Consumers experience additional benefits of $170 million annually. Total annual benefits are $571 million versus a foreign animal disease surveillance budget of $165 million.

Motivation for Technology Adoption and Its Impact on Abandonment: A Case Study of U.S. Cotton Farmers AgEcon
Uematsu, Hiroki; Mishra, Ashok K.; Roberts, Roland K.; Lambert, Dayton M.; English, Burton C..
We estimate a bivariate probit model with sample selection to identify factors affecting adoption and abandonment of precision farming technologies for cotton farmers, using the 2009 Southern Cotton Precision Farming Survey conducted in 12 Southern states in the United States. Farmers for whom being at the forefront of agricultural technology is not an important reason for adoption are more likely to abandon precision farming technologies. This study identified various factors associated with adoption and retention of precision farming technologies. Findings from this study offer significant information to policy‐makers for a better formulation of agri‐environmental programs that encourage farmers to adopt environmentally benign farming practices...

Determining Optimal Levels of Nitrogen Fertilizer Using Random Parameter Models AgEcon
Tumusiime, Emmanuel; Brorsen, B. Wade; Mosali, Jagadeesh; Johnson, Jim; Locke, James; Biermacher, Jon T..
The parameters of yield response functions can vary by year. Past studies usually assume yield functions are nstochastic ‘‘limited’’ stochastic. In this study, we estimate rye– ryegrass yield functions in which all parameters are random. The three functional forms considered are the linear response plateau, the quadratic, and the Spillman-Mitscherlich. Nonstochastic yield models are rejected in favor of stochastic parameter models. Quadratic functional forms fit the data poorly. Optimal nitrogen application recommendations are calculated for the linear response plateau and Spillman-Mitscherlich. The stochastic models lead to smaller recommended levels of nitrogen, but the economic benefits of using fully stochastic crop yield functions are small because...

Análisis económico de la “bio-carbonización” como práctica de manejo agrícola AgEcon
Ramirez, Juan Andres; Rosales Alvarez, Ramon.

Farm-Level Evidence on the Sustainable Growth Paradigm from Grain and Livestock Farms AgEcon
Escalante, Cesar L.; Turvey, Calum G.; Barry, Peter J..
This study uses the sustainable growth rate model to investigate, measure, and analyze sustainable growth rates and trends for Illinois farmers. Results of farm-level econometric analyses indicate the relevance of the sustainable growth paradigm in explaining most farm financial decisions made each year. Grain farms have shown a greater tendency to balance growth through adjustments in production efficiencies while livestock farms rely more on financial leveraging strategies. In general, our results have shown that the farm sector has adapted to positive or negative sustainable growth challenges consistent with the Higgins' model and that, from an equilibrium point of view, countercyclical measures of the sustainable growth challenge indicate that there...

LINKING CROSS-COMPLIANCE AND AGRI-ENVIRONMENTAL SCHEMES: A CASE STUDY IN EMILIA ROMAGNA AgEcon
Bartolini, Fabio; Gallerani, Vittorio; Raggi, Meri; Viaggi, Davide.
Agri-environmental schemes (AES) have been studied under different perspectives in Europe, since the beginning of the ‘90s. Under regulation 1698/2005, agri-environmental schemes design has been modified with a more clear identification of a baseline for identifying the commitments and the costs of these prescriptions. The link between cross-compliance and agri-environmental schemes can be interpreted as a problem of joint design by the decision maker. From the farmer’s point of view, private costs of participations in agri-environmental schemes shall be added to the cost to be compliant with the mandatory standard defined for each measure if they are not already implemented. This amount of costs arise when mandatory standard are required in the whole...

ENDOGENOUS INITIATIVES AS A CHANCE TO IMPROVE RURAL LIVELIHOOD? RESULTS OF A CASE STUDY IN BALTOW, SOUTH-EASTERN POLAND AgEcon
Gramzow, Andreas.
Polish rural areas, compared to other EU-25 member states, still show a high agricultural employment due to a lack of job opportunities in other rural economic sectors. In particular, in South-eastern Poland the shut down of heavy industry companies in the early 1990s left many rural inhabitants only with small incomes from their peasant farms or pensions. In the commune Ba³tów (South-eastern Poland) in order to counteract these developments, local development associations and a regional partnership undertook initiatives to stimulate the regional economy by creating a tourism infrastructure. This paper presents a case study, conducted in Ba³tów, which analyses local problems, development chances, and experience with local endogenous initiatives. The main...

The Law of the Minimum and Sources of Nonzero Skewness for Crop Yield Distributions AgEcon
Tumusiime, Emmanuel; Brorsen, B. Wade; Boyer, Christopher N..
Crop yields are not commonly found to be normally distributed, but the cause of the non-normal distribution is unclear. The non-normality might be due to weather variables and/or an underlying von Liebig law of the minimum (LoM) production function. Our objective is to determine the degree to which an underlying linear response stochastic plateau production function can explain the skewness of Oklahoma wheat yields at varied nitrogen rates. We use farm-level wheat data from a long-term experiment in Oklahoma, which is a unique data set to the literature. The Tembo et al. (2008) production function provides negative skewness at all levels of nitrogen with skewness near zero for both very high and very low levels of nitrogen. Observed skewness for wheat...

Heterogeneity in the Evaluation of Quality Assurance Systems: The International Food Standard (IFS) in European Agribusiness AgEcon
Schulze, Holger; Albersmeier, Friederike; Gawron, Jana-Christina; Spiller, Achim; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
Due to the growing demands of customers and several food crises, quality assurance schemes have become increasingly popular in agribusiness. With this trend in mind, it seems worthwhile to take a closer look at the satisfaction of participating European companies. The study focuses on the IFS, which has gained much relevance in the food industry. A questionnaire concerned with perceptions of the advantages and disadvantages of the IFS was answered by 389 companies. The results indicate that the overall evaluation of the IFS is primarily affected by the perceived usefulness of the catalogue of requirements and its evaluation. Furthermore, a cluster analysis was conducted and three clusters were identified, representing heterogeneous evaluations of the IFS.
