This article is concerned with the management of water resources in the region of Western Macedonia. Taking into account the great importance of agriculture as the principal consumer of water in the region, as well as the drastic increase in regional water consumption over the last decade, a related study evaluating the demand patterns for irrigated water can prove to be extremely valuable. This paper examines the demand patterns and probable trends for irrigated water using the Discrete Sequential Stohastic Programming (DSSP) Model for four agricultural products (apples, peaches, potatoes and tomatoes) and five specific subareas (the prefecture of Florina, the prefecture of Kastoria, the prefecture of Grevena, the city of Kozani and the city of... |

As it is clear from the foregoing, the countries/country groups analyzed by education, R&D and labor market characteristics show a rather mixed picture. There is a lot more work to do at community, regional and national levels. This is true not only for the member states but also for the candidate countries. Cluster 1 and Cluster 2 proceed well on the road towards achieving the objectives of more and better jobs, full employment and social cohesion. These are open countries and most of them do not hinder the free flow of persons regarding the citizens of the new member states. As to competitiveness, these countries are among the best not only in Europe but also in the world. The best example for using synergies is the Scandinavian cooperation in the... |

The incidence and depth of food and nutritional insecurity has been estimated and its determinants in a food-surplus area, viz. the state of Punjab, have been studied. The consumption expenditure has been found to be directly associated with the levels of income/assets in both rural and urban areas. The study has revealed that the food and nutritional insecurity prevails even in the food-surplus areas, with low-income households being more vulnerable to it. The access to food determined by the level of income and family-size has been found as the most important factor influencing food and nutritional security in food-surplus areas. Increase in production alone does not ensure food and nutritional security. The study has suggested that income and employment... |

In spite of the fact that the Ugandan National Agricultural Research System has developed and released several production-enhancing technologies over a century, yields of most major crops at the farm level have been low. Given that about 80 percent of Uganda’s labor force is employed in agriculture, the scope for sustainable poverty reduction in Uganda depends very much on improving agricultural productivity. It is in this context, this paper examines why there has been poor adoption of production-enhancing technologies in the production of maize, which is a major crop in Uganda and what the impacts of the exiting production environment are on factor payments. This study reveals that farmers do not pay proper attention to soil fertility management, which... |

The relationship between farm productivity and farm structure has been analyzed focusing mainly on one channel of transmission of this relationship, viz. input-use pattern in rice production. The hypothesized relationship tested in this study is that land inequality influences access to/ use of resources in rice production and in-turn influences productivity. Market imperfections aggravate the negative effect of land inequity on productivity. Results have shown that smallholders’ share in inputs like fertilizers, and irrigation has increased over time, but a large number of smallholders still do not have access to these resources. Study has demonstrated that policies like fertilizer subsidy, agricultural credit, and minimum support prices are able to... |

The perfect segregation of the different agricultural production types, namely conventional, organic or based on genetically modified organisms is not possible in practice. But the side by side functioning of this systems in agricultural production and further on of the products on the shelves requires suitable measures during cultivation, harvest, transport, storage, and processing to ensure co-existence. Consumers, food and feed industry, as well as wholesalers and retailers in European Union, including Polish ones demand a reasonable degree of choice between GMO and non-GMO derived products. Accordingly the ability to maintain different agricultural production and processing systems is a pre-requisite for providing a high degree of consumer choice. As... |

Weekly demand functions are estimated for bananas traded on the Sydney wholesale market using data for the period 1953 to 1967. Graphs of these functions suggest that the demand for bananas varies in a systematic fashion through the year. Further research will be required before it is possible to identify the specific dynamic factors responsible for these demand shifts. However, the short-run relationships which have been estimated provide quantitive information which could be used to evaluate the potential benefits to growers of a planned marketing program. |

New Jersey is very much like many other states in the northeastern region of the United States. On the other hand, it is unique in a number of ways. New Jersey is characterized by (1) a large and affluent consumer base, (2) access to major ports and air transportation facilities which facilitates foreign imports and exports, and (3) large food manufacturing, retail and service sectors. New Jersey's food wholesale sector is therefore an important economic sector with strong potential for future growth. Food wholesalers can provide stable high-paying jobs in an economy still recovering from the 1989-92 recession. Limited knowledge of the challenges facing this sector may hinder its potential growth and development. Given the implications that could be... |
