Measuring food quality: concepts, methods and challenges Organic Eprints
From 12 to 14 February, the Louis Bolk Instituut organised the 3rd annual QLIF workshop, titled "Measuring food quality, concepts, methods and challenges”. During these days a diverse and intensive program was presented. Participants came from, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Macedonia, Poland, Turkey. Participants were all very enthusiastic, both on the quality of the presentations and the total program. For all those of you who missed it, I give a brief impression. On the first day definitions of food quality were discussed as well as the methods to measure this quality. Machteld Huber explained the inner quality concept, developed by the Louis Bolk Instituut. This inner quality concept is based on two main life processes in organisms;...

International Symposium on Evolutionary Breeding in Cereals Organic Eprints
Evolutionary plant breeding has a long history, but has so far not become part of mainstream breeding research, nor has it been implemented in practice to any substantial degree. However, over the last decade, research in evolutionary plant breeding has markedly intensified. For example, there are currently major research projects on-going in this area, including the EU funded project SOLIBAM, the Wheat Breeding LINK project in the UK, and the Danish Biobreed project. Also, a new 3-year international research project called COBRA on this topic is due to start in March 2013. Funded by the CORE Organic 2 Eranet the project brings together over 40 partner organizations from 18 European countries. In addition, interest in evolutionary plant breeding is...

Socio-economic aspects of animal health and food safety in organic farming systems Organic Eprints
Sustaining Animal Health and Food Safety in Organic Farming (SAFO) is a European Commission funded Concerted Action Project with the objective to contribute to improved food safety and animal health in organic livestock production systems in existing and candidate member countries of the European Union. We aim at doing this through exchange and active communication of research results and conclusions between researchers, policy makers, farmers and the wider stakeholder community, including consumers. Workshops form a central part of these activities, documented by the proceedings. This volume with the contributions to first SAFO Workshop in Florence in September 2003 is the first in a series of five proceedings published during the lifetime of the project...

Daniel, Claudia; Linder, Christian; Wyss, Eric.
Aufgrund fehlender...

Life Cycle Assessment in the Agri-food sector Organic Eprints
Focus on sustainable (agricultural) production should go hand in hand with the quest for sus-tainable (food) consumption. This idea is in agreement with principles of Integrated Product Policy, which is the modern chain based and product-oriented approach to environmental im-provement and regulation adopted by national environmental authorities, the EU Commission, UNEP and increasingly also by private companies. The regulation of agri-environmental problems has so far focused on improvements in farm production systems in relation to local effects. This approach does not take into consideration the developments in food processing and consumer choices as well as more global environmental effects. In the coming decades production and consumption of livestock...

Compost and digestate: sustainability, benefits, impacts for the environment and for plant production Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Jacques G.; Kupper, Thomas; Tamm, Lucius; SCHENK, Maria.
This proceedings volume contains the papers presented at the CODIS 2008 congress held on 27 - 29 February 2008 in Solothurn (Switzerland). The composting and digestion of biogenic waste materials and the subsequent application of compost and digestate to soil contributes to nutrient recycling and renewable energy production. Moreover, compost and digestate can improve soil fertility and suppress plant diseases. On the other hand, compost and digestate may also contain a variety of pollutants hazardous to soil, such as heavy metals and organic contaminants.Compost and digestate have been thoroughly investigated in the framework of two associated projects entitled Organic Pollutants in Compost and Digestate in Switzerland and Effects of Composts and Digestate...

Breeding for resilience: a strategy for organic and low-input farming systems? Organic Eprints
Global change is increasingly affecting agricultural production and threatening food security. Organic and low-input farming systems are less demanding in fossil energy and might thus contribute to moderating global carbon missions. Moreover, under increased uncertainty and variability in environmental conditions, these systems offer solutions for buffering against climatic extremes, disease epidemics, changing nutrient availability, and other stresses that will add to already heterogeneous environmental conditions. 2010 has been designated the Biodiversity Target year by Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. Yet, it is clear that biological diversity in agroecosystems, measured as the number and abundance of species as well as genetic...

Achieving Social and Economic Development Through Ecological and Organic Agricultural Alternatives Organic Eprints
The third edition of the continental conference (3AOC) is holding in Nigeria October 5 – 9, 2015 with the theme “Achieving Social and Economic Development Through Ecological and Organic Agricultural Alternatives”. This conference is coming up in the continent when the call for need to improve rural livelihoods of Africans is becoming louder by the day. A veritable tool through which the livelihood of an average African can be improved is Organic Agriculture because it has an inherent potential to reduce production costs regularly incurred by small-medium scale farmers (principal actors in African agriculture), reduce debts, increase income, mitigate the vagaries of climate change, cope with market fluctuations, sustain soil fertility, minimize health...
