The present report reviews the spiny lobster fishery on the Mahe Plateau for the 2001/2002 fishing season. The monitoring programme, set up in 1992, was continued this season to collect more information on the spiny lobster stock in order to improve and maintain proper management of this resource around the Mahe Plateau. For the 2001/2002 lobster fishing season, a total of 40 licenses were issued namely twenty seven on Mahe, five on Praslin and eight on La Digue. Similar to previous seasons, the most frequently used lobster fishing technique was snorkelling which involved 32 fishing units, whilst only four units used the trap method and one used both snorkelling and trap. For this three-month fishing season, a total of 5.5 tonnes of spiny lobsters were... |

The material on the "Black Sea Data Management Guide" are prepared in accordance with the working plans of the IOC Committee on International Data and Information Exchange (IODE) and its regional component in the Black Sea region to assist specialists of the Black Sea countries in the field of Data Management. The Guide includes the following items: • national oceanographic data centres, designated national agencies, other marine centres and institutions of the Black Sea region countries dealing with problems of oceanographic data; • current international and national projects and programs of the Black Sea region countries; • preliminary catalogue marine observation in the Black Sea; • bibliography of publications of the marine centres and institute of the... |

Total SST in a coupled GCM is diagnosed by separating the variability into signal variance and noise variance. The signal and the noise is calculated from multi-decadal simulations from the COLA anomaly coupled GCM and the interactive ensemble model by assuming both simulations have a similar signal variance. The interactive ensemble model is a new coupling strategy that is designed to increase signal to noise ratio by using an ensemble of atmospheric realizations coupled to a single ocean model. The procedure for separating the signal and the noise variability presented here does not rely on any ad hoc temporal or spatial filter. Based on these simulations, we find that the signal versus the noise of SST variability in the North Pacific is significantly... |

The third session of the Executive Council Working Group on the WMO Integrated Global Observing System and the WMO Information System (EC-WG/WIGOS-WIS) was held at the WMO Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, from 24 to 26 March 2010. The session was chaired by Prof A. Divino Moura (Brazil), Third Vice-President of the WMO and Chair of EC WG. EC-WG/WIGOS-WIS reviewed major deliberations of the second session of its Subgroup on WIGOS (SG-WIGOS-2, Geneva, Switzerland, 19-23 October 2009), and the sixth session of the Inter-Commission Group on WIS (ICG-WIS, Seoul, Republic of Korea, 22-26 February 2010) and developed appropriate proposals and recommendations. EC-WG/WIGOS-WIS further considered: (a) Report on the WIGOS Projects (Status, Evaluation, Lessons... |

The first meeting of the South West Indian Ocean EAF Regional Task Group (RTG) was held in Mombasa, Kenya, from 27 to 30 January 2009, together with an ecological risk assessment methodology workshop. It was attended by 20 partic ipants from the South West Indian Ocean (SWIO) countries, the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Project (SWIOFP), the Agulhas and Somali Currents Large Marine Ecosystems (ASCLME) project, the Scientific Committee of the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)/Nairobi Convention Implementation Unit, the African Union Commission and FAO. The RTG is an implementation structure under the EAF-Nansen project GCP/INT/003/NOR and serves as the forum for training in ecological risk... |

The Second ODINCARSA Training Course in Marine Data Management was held in Cartagena, Colombia between 13 and 17 October 2003, hosted by the Centro de Investigaciones Oceanográficas e Hidrogáficas (CIOH). The course was attended by students from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador and Perú. The key objective of the training course was to establish a core group of trained data management instructors with the ability to teach the OceanTeacher system. A total of nine data managers were certified to provide future training for the ODINCARSA region. Four instructors were identified who could provide the training in both Spanish and English. The group discussed additional training material that could be included in OceanTeacher and agreed to... |

The possibility of wholly or partially replaced wheat offals with dried water hyacinth meal in the diets of Tilapia zillii fingerlings was investigated. Four diets, A, B., C and D were formulated. Diet A contain 45% wheat offal in addition to fishmeal and soyabean meal as sources of protein. B and C were diets in which 100% and 50% of the wheat offals were replaced by dried water hyacinth meal respectively. Diet D had 80% water hyacinth meal and an additional 18% Casein as the only other source protein. Results of four weeks feeding trial showed that Tilapia zillii fingerlings would not ingest diet D containing 80% water hyacinth meal without the addition of fishmeal. Water hyacinth meal could not wholly replace wheat offals in Tilapia diets unless at... |

This document provides a regiona loverview of land-based sources and activities and their impacts on the marine, coastal and associated freshwater environments in the East African region. The overview covers three coastal states [Keya, United Republic of Tanzania (Tanzania) and Mozambique] and five island States [Madagascar, Mauritius, the Islamic Federal Republic of Comoros (Comoros), the Zanzibar state of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Seychelles]. The rapidly expanding coastal populations of the region exert ever-increasing pressure on coastal habitats and resources. Land-based anthropogenic activities such as agriculture and industry, coastal urbanization, tourism and rock/mineral extraction, disturb natural condition and processes, degranding... |
