The objective of this study was to evaluate the development of seedlings of ingazeiro (Inga edulis Mart.) on alternatives substrates. The work was carried out in experimental design of randomized block with four replications and the treatments consisted of the substrates: Oxisol; Oxisol + cattle manure (20%), Oxisol + cattle manure (40%), Oxisol + sawdust (20%) and Oxisol + sawdust (40%). The diameter and height of the seedlings were measured at 106, 122, 137 and 153 days after sowing, and together with the last measurement were determined the number of leaves, root growth, fresh biomass of shoot and root, dry weight of shoot and root, total dry matter and also certain morphological indices. The treatment consists in... |

Herein, we present results from an ethnobotanical study (from February to August 2009) aiming the improvement and rationalization of medical practices, based on popular use of plants. We applied semi-structured interviews to 220 families from the urban area of Mandaguaçu municipality, Paraná State. During the interviews we recorded the following information about the used plants: common name; plant part used; method of preparation; collection site; therapeutic indication, and known adverse effects. Additionally, we compared the data obtained in the interviews with the literature in order to identify contradiction in use and application. Among the interviewees, 90% use medicinal plants, obtained especially from the backyards. We recorded 44 ethnobotanical... |

Kidneys are especially irrigated by a pair of arteries originated from the aorta artery. The presence of additional renal arteries is the most frequent variation in this vascularization, an aspect important to be known in renal surgeries and radiological procedures (SAMPAIO; PASSOS, 1992). This study aimed to observe the prevalence of numeric variation and the origin of the additional renal artery. For this purpose, 24 cadavers and 26 blocks were used; each block contained the kidneys and their respective arteries and veins, the abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava, taken from adults of different ethnicity and genders, from the Department of Morphological Science, State University of Maringá (DCM/UEM) and Laboratory of Anatomy, |

A large amount of unidentified material of the Neotropical genus Guatteria (Annonaceae) is lying on herbarium shelves around the world. Here twelve species are described in an attempt to reduce this amount of unidentified material. Next to this, previously unidentified material is now assigned to G. asplundiana, G. microcarpa, G. pastazae, and G. scalarinervia, four previously described but poorly known species, thus providing a clearer circumscription of these species. Furthermore, G. discolor and G. megalophylla appear to have a wider distribution than previously thought. Lastly, G. macrantha, a curious species only known from the type, is excluded from the genus and referred to Uvaria. With the description of twelve new species and the synonymizing of... |

We researched the ecology of the third rarest crane species, Siberian crane, which breeds in northern-eastern Siberian tundra. Nesting in places near great lakes, this crane appears to be an indicator of the global warming processes that affect lake growth as a result of the permafrost situation close to the surface in tundra. Research has shown that these birds are presumably fish-eating during their incubation period, coinciding with the flooding season when fish come to areas around great lakes. Such a diet may be explained by the necessity of high-energy food during the incubating period as well as the particularity of this species for leaving plant resources around the nest point for the period of the first days after chick hatching. This situation... |

We are developing a set of ontologies that deal with vector-borne diseases and the arthropod vectors that transmit them. For practical reasons (application priorities), we initiated this project with an ontology of insecticide resistance followed by a series of ontologies that describe malaria as well as physiological processes of mosquitoes that are relevant to, and involved in, disease transmission. These will be expanded to encompass other vector-borne diseases as well as non-mosquito vectors. The aim of the whole undertaking, which is worked out in the frame of the international IDO (Infectious Disease Ontology) project, is to provide the community with a set of ontological tools that can be used both in the development of specific databases and, most... |

This paper registers 16 species of aquatic molluscs, especially the limnic and estuarine species Heleobia davisi Silva & Thomé, 1985, Heleobia australis australis (Orbigny, 1835) and Erodona mactroides Bosc, 1802, from D'Una river and Mirim, Imaruí and Santo Antônio lagoons and Laguna Beach (Santa Catarina, Brazil). This parameter was very important for the paleoecological analysis conduced for that area, where oscillation of the sea level occurred during the Holocen Period. Heleobia davisi is registered for the first time to the Santa Catarina. |

Summary In this paper the author records the incidence of the fungus Crinula caliciformis Fr. on various plants of the Amazons region for the first time. This incidence was observed in the States of Para and Amazonas (Brazil). The fungus C. caliciiformis Fr. is characterized by rigid, black and calix shaped tall fructifications — synnemata. It does not penetrate living tissues but colonizes on — living bark or cork of branches and trunks. Six plants are listed as new hosts of this funguns: Bauhinia acreana Harms, Gmelina arbórea Roxb. Inga cinnamomea Spr., Citrus grandis Osbeck, Jacaranda copaia (Aubl.) D. Don and Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg. |
