Records of 56 species of mining Lepidoptera are given, mostly for Wallonia. Stigmella thuringiaca (Namur: Nismes, on Potentilla tabernaemontani), Ectoedemia arcuatella (Luxembourg, Namur, on Fragaria vesca) and Leucoptera lustratella (Luxembourg, Namur, on Hypericum perforatum) are reported new for Belgium on the basis of reared adults, Stigmella crataegella (Luxembourg: Belvaux, Crataegus monogyna), S. confusella (West Vlaanderen, Betula pubescens), Trifurcula subnitidella (Namur: Nismes, Lotus corniculatus), and Ectoedemia spinosella (Namur: Nismes, Prunus spinosa) are reported as new on the basis of vacated mines and Coptotriche heinemanni (on Agrimonia eupatoria) and C. gaunacella (on Prunus spinosa) are reported as new both from the province of... |

New and interesting Microlepidoptera from The Netherlands (Lepidoptera). This is the fourth 'annual' compilation of Microlepidoptera collected in The Netherlands, the first three having been published in Entomologische Berichten (vols 45: 89-104 [1985]; 46: 137-156 [1986]; 48: 69-81 [1988]). The following fifteen species are here recorded for the first time from The Netherlands: 1. Ectoedemia heringi (Toll) (Nepticulidae), leafmining on Quercus in eastern and southeastern parts. 2. Alloclemensia mesospilella (Herrich-Schäffer) (Incurvariidae), from Noord-Brabant, details to be published by Van Nieukerken. 3. Nematopogon schwarziellus Zeller (Adelidae), previously misidentified as N. pilella (Denis & Schiffermüller). 4. Nemapogon wolffiella Karsholt... |

A grapevine leafminer found recently in table grape orchards and vineyards in the Paarl region (Western Cape, South Africa) is described as Holocacista capensis sp. n. It has also been found on native Rhoicissus digitata and bred on that species in the laboratory. It is closely related to Holocacista salutans (Meyrick, 1921), comb. n. (from Antispila), described from Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, but widespread in southern Africa and a native leafminer of various Vitaceae: Rhoicissus tomentosa, R. digitata, R. tridentata and Cissus cornifolia. Holocacista capensis has been found on Vitis vinifera both in Gauteng and Western Cape, the earliest record being from 1950 in Pretoria. The initial host shift from native Vitaceae to Vitis must have occurred much... |

This book provides an up-to-date survey of the biodiversity of the Netherlands. The treatment of all taxonomic groups which occur in the Netherlands forms the core (chapter 5). Around 100 specialists contributed to this unique survey. The other chapters highlight many aspects of the Dutch biodiversity: natural history (chapter 2), research (chapter 3), classification (chapter 4), patterns (chapter 7), trends (chapter 8), government policy (chapter 10) and nature management (chapter 11). In this summary we focus on the taxonomic treatments. They show that even a small and geologically relatively young country such as the Netherlands, harbours an immense diversity in life forms. Trifurcula (Glaucolepis) lituanica Ivinskis & van Nieukerken, sp. nov., is described from adults reared from stemmining larvae on Salvia pratensis (Lamiaceae) from Lithuania and some specimens taken as adults in Austria, Slovenia and Greece. In addition the new species is recorded from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Romania. Superficially, it resembles Trifurcula (Glaucolepis) headleyella (Stainton, 1854), especially the male, but it differs by male genitalia with additional cornuti, a unique character for the subgenus, and the female genitalia differ by the larger number of convolutions in the ductus spermathecae. It is the only known Trifurcula to make its cocoon partially inside a stemmine. The synonymy of Nepticula dubiella Hauder, 1912 with... |
