Heterogeneous genetic structure in a natural population of Raulí (Nothofagus nervosa) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Carrasco,Basilio; Eaton,Lafayette; Letelier,Luis; Díaz,Carole; García-Gonzáles,Rolando.
Heterozygote deficiencies in natural populations of outbreeding tree species are common and thought to be due mainly to biparental inbreeding. Inbreeding is believed to be caused by family structure within populations, a product of limited seed dispersal and probably limited pollen dispersal. Although both theory and simulation studies predict that structure should be apparent where trees are isolated by distance, most studies of structure in natural populations have detected only a weak spatial genetic structuring. In this contribution, we compare the use of spatial autocorrelation methodology and F statistics with the concept of relatedness to examine the spatial genetic structure in the natural population of a native southern beech and to explore the...

Response of wheat seeds to zinc application during storage Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Lemes,Elisa S; Tunes,Lilian M. de; Almeida,Andreia da S; Meneghello,Geri E; Oliveira,Sandro de; Muniz,Marlove F. B.
Seed coating is among the most potentially beneficial treatments to enhance seed performance, contributing to the improvement of crop stands due to its role in improved seedling development. Thus, micronutrients such as zinc exhibit potential for use in seed coatings. The objective of this research is to evaluate the effect of coating wheat seeds with zinc sulfate on traits that are related to seed quality during storage and nutrition efficiency during seedling growth. The levels of ZnSO4 used were 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 mL kg-1 seed. After 0,3 and 6 months of storage, the germination percentage, mean root length, root dry mass, seedling emergence, nutritional efficiency (absorption, transport and use) and zinc content in the seeds were evaluated. Seed coating...

R. Petitpas, J.T. Ibarra, M. Miranda, and C. Bonacic. 2016. Spatial patterns in a 24-year period show a case of increase forest cover and decrease fragmentation in Andean temperate landscapes, Chile. Cien. Inv. Agr. 43(3):384-395. Changes in landscape pattern were studied in a temperate landscape of the La Araucanía Region, Chile. Using aerial photographs from 1983 and 2007, we created land use/land cover maps. We then quantified the changes in composition and configuration by using landscape metrics and an adjacency matrix. By 2007, the dominant land cover had changed from agriculture to native vegetation. Residential areas showed the largest relative increase (670%) and had significant adjacency with native vegetation. The native vegetation increased by...

Sustainable Agriculture: Unifying Concepts Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Gastó,Juan; Vera,Leonardo; Vieli,Lorena; Montalba,Rene.
This work is the product of a long process that tried to approximate the principia involved in sustainable agriculture in an attempt to analyze it. We believe that these principia are crucial for the systematic, rigorous, and consistent development of sustainable agriculture. The unifying concepts of agriculture sustainability are classified into seven fundamental principies: (i) there is a hierarchy in decision-making with respect to human actions on the landscape and environment; (ii) human impact on the land should be analyzed from different perspectives (local, global, anthropocentric, and ecocentric); (iii) the carrying capacity in an agrarian context is crucial to ecosystem management and design; (iv) humans arrange nature with little consideration...

Fusarium crown rot disease: biology, interactions, management and function as a possible sensor of global climate change Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Moya-Elizondo,Ernesto A.
E.A. Moya-Elizondo. 2013. Fusarium crown rot disease: biology, interactions, management and function as a possible sensor of global climate change. Cien. Inv. Agr. 40(2):235-252. Wheat crops are commonly affected by the dryland root rot complex (DLRRC) under dry and semiarid conditions. This complex is associated with seedling blight, and rotting of roots, crowns and stems of wheat plants. Several pathogens are associated with this complex, but Fusarium crown rot disease (FCR) is the most common and is of worldwide importance. Increased drought frequency and changes in rainfall regimes associated with global climate change may increase the prevalence of this complex of diseases, especially of FCR, in wheat crop areas. This review discusses the...

Inbreeding depression and genetic components for popping expansion and other traits in Brazilian populations of popcorn Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Arnhold,Emmanuel; Soriano Viana,José Marcelo; Mora,Freddy; Vieira Miranda,Glauco; Gonçalves Silva,Ricardo.
The aim of the study was to assess inbreeding depression and determine genetic components in landrace populations of popcorn. Six Brazilian popcorn landraces: Amarelo, Beija-Flor, Branco, Rosa-claro, Roxo and Viçosa, were subjected to self-pollination. Experiments with SO populations and their selfing populations (SI) were conducted in a randomized complete block design. The estimates of inbreeding depression varied from 1.2% (popping expansion) to 79% (grain yield). The gene action was predominantly additive for plant height, ear height and hundred-grain-weight. The dominance genetic effects were important for index of prolificacy and grain yield. The genetic effect of popping expansion was bidirectional with nuil dominance and a predominance of additive...

Influence of dry leaves of common tree and shrub species from southern Chile on the growth of lettuce infected with Meloidogyne hapla Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Arismendi,Nolberto; Böhm,Laura.
Extracts of many plant species have shown nematicide activity attributable to phytochemicals present in their tissues or formed during a degradation process. Nevertheless, before the application of plant compounds in the field, it is necessary to know their effect on plant hosts. Three concentrations (1, 2.5 and 5% w/w) of dry leaves of Buddleja globosa, Drymis winteri, Eucalyptus globulus, Gevuina avellana, Laurelia sempervirens and Ugni molinae were evaluated on growth parameters (plant height, root length and leaf dry matter) in plants of Lactuca sativa infested with Meloidogyne hapla. Lettuce growth parameters were significantly affected by the interaction between the species and dry leaf tissues concentrations. Drymis winteri showed the biggest...

Pérez,Delfina de J; González,Andrés; Sahagún,Jaime; Vázquez,Luis M; Rivera,Antonio; Franco,Omar; Domínguez,Aurelio.
The evaluation and selection of potato (Solanum tuberosum) cultivars for commercial production in the high valleys of Mexico are important for plant breeding, seed production, and the generation of technology. In this work, ten potato cultivars from five different environments in México were evaluated to determine the proportion of genetic variation contained within each. The potatoes were sown in a completely randomized complete block design. Heritability was determined to be between 53% and 83%, suggesting that there is genetic variability among the potato cultivars that might be agronomically important. According to the additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) model, the highest tuber yields were obtained at the locality named...
