Trophic Ecology of Sardinella gibbosa (Pisces: Clupeidae) and Atherinomorous lacunosus (Pisces: Atherinidae) in Mtwapa Creek and Wasini Channel, Kenya OceanDocs
Nyunja, J.A.; Mavuti, K.M.; Wakwabi, E..
The food habits of two schooling planktivorous fishes, Sardinella gibbosa and Atherinomorous lacunosus, were investigated in Mtwapa creek and Wasini Channel of the Kenya coast. Spatial and temporal variations in their food and feeding habits were assessed using the percentage numerical abundance method, percentage frequency of occurrence, stomach fullness indices and the Tokeshi graphical method. This study established a clear spatial separation of Mtwapa creek from Wasini Channel in terms of the abiotic and biotic data. Highly significant differences (t-test, p < 0.05) were observed between the two study areas in temperature, salinity, transparency, conductivity, chlorophyll a and in zooplankton abundance and diversity. The diet of the two fish species...

Processing Fish: Nigeria OceanDocs
Artisanal fishing in Africa, historically dominated by fishermen in canoes and boats who set out to sea from small coastal fishing villages in search of bonga, sardinella and other pelagic fish, has provided a nutritious source of food often cheaper than meat. As a result, fish has been consumed by large portions of the population and has become a diet staple. Today, however, some African fisheries, including the bonga (Ethmalosa fimbriata), which is widely harvested and eaten by west Africans, suffer from periods of excess harvest or glut, particularly during the peak season between November and May. Because most fishing communities do not have ice-storage facilities, the daily catch is either sold fresh or smoke-dried before it spoils....

Ben Mouelli, I.; Bejaoui, B.; Raïs, S.; Brahim, M..

Gutiérrez Delgado, A. R.; Alvarez Cruz, A.; Frías, M. del P.; Alfonso, I..

Fisheries Science Collaborations: The Critical Role of the Community OceanDocs
Wilson, D.C..
The present paper is based on a collation of information, through both a literature review and an internet search, on North American programs that involve some kind of scientific collaboration between fishers and fisheries scientists. It identifies four basic models of such collaboration and offers examples of collaborative activities that seem to fit into each of them. The first model defers to the expertise of the scientist for all major decisions and creates a strong programmatic distinction between what is science, and shall be done by scientists, and what are other, related activities that can be carried out by others. Various kinds of tagging programs, fisher advisory boards, at-sea research collaboration and many other activities fit this model. The...

Indian Ocean Islands – Summary OceanDocs
Westmacott, Susie; Quod, J.P..
CORDIO activities were conducted in seven of the Indian Ocean Islands namely, Comores, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte, Réunion, Rodregues, and Seychelles. On each island biophysical and socio-economic assessments were conducted which have strengthened the annual monitoring of the reefs and collected baseline data for the socio-economic monitoring. In addition, a rapid assessment of the risk posed to island communities of ciguatera poisoning caused by potential increases in abundance of ciguatoxin producing dinoflagellates following bleaching was carried out. This study will eventually be expanded to encompass sites throughout the CORDIO region. Finally, as a record, a digital photographic database of the monitoring sites has been developed for the Island...

The Necessity of Optimal Perturbations OceanDocs
DelSole, T..
An optimal perturbation is an initial condition that optimizes amplitude growth over a prescribed time in a linear system. Previous studies have argued that optimal perturbations play an important role in turbulence. Two basic questions related to this theory are whether optimal perturbations necessarily grow in all turbulent background flows, and whether the turbulent flow necessarily excites optimal perturbations at the rate required to account for the observed eddy variance. This paper shows that both questions can be answered in the affirmative for statistically steady turbulence. The argument put forward here is independent of any closure theory of turbulence. In essence, the result follows from the fact that statistical equilibrium and conservation...

Fishes and macroinvertebrates associated to two types of artificial habitats deployed in Taganga Bay were assessed by stationary visual census to compare thes assemblages. Foty-one species of fishes and nine macroinvertebrates were observed in eleven visual censues. The distribution patterns depicted in abundance and richness between the two types of habitats used (concrete blocks vs. artificial shelters), were a possible response to dissimilarities in their location and number of visual census. A artificial structures in Colombia, probably owing to their proximity with heterogeneous natural habitats. The use of complex artificial habitats could have potential useful to conserve, restore and manage some marine resources supported in planned researchers in...
