Le Danger des Traitements par le Sulfate de Cuivre en Zone Conchylicole : Toxicite vis-a-vis des Oeufs et des Jeunes Larves de Crassostrea gigas. ArchiMer
His, Edouard; Robert, René.
Oyster farmers use a solution of copper sulphate to kill competitors and seaweeds on their oyster grounds. Experiments describe the influence of this product on embryos and D larvae of Crassostrea gigas. Concentrations above 25 g/l are toxic for embryos, and above 100 g/l disturb growth of more resistant D larvae. However this product is less toxic than copper chloride.

Qualite sanitaire des coquillages apres passage en bassin insubmersible aere ArchiMer
Piclet, Guy; Le Mao, P.
The temporary bad bacteriological results in some shellfish harvesting areas in Brittany (France) lead us to recommand the use of insubmersible aerate tanks in shellfish plant. The shellfish depuration kinetics are as good as those noted in purification plants using chemically or physically purificated water. The generalisation of this technic to a regional scale corroborates its efficiency and allows us to fix good practice rules. The observance of these rules must lead shellfish-grower to sell, permanently, bacteriologically proper products.

Influence d'une peinture antisalissure a base de sels organo-metalliques de l'etain sur le captage en milieu naturel de l'huitre Crassostrea gigas. ArchiMer
The effect of tributyltin based antifouling paint on the settlement of Crassostrea gigas was studied in the Bay of Arcachon and in the Gironde Estuary. The results are related to the amounts of paint used, the environmental factors and the reproduction pattern in each area. In both areas, the TBT based antifouling paint considerably reduced settlement efficiency.

La malacofaune marine d''un site neolithique de l''Ile d''Oleron (Charente-Maritime): Questions posees au biologiste ArchiMer
Gruet, Y; Laporte, L.
The species which have been identified in this Neolithic site are still living along the Bay of Biscay coasts. One of them, Haliotis , has recently disappeared from the Oleron Island. Some of them, as the very fruitful Patella and Monodonta lineata , have certainly been gathered and devoted to food. Others, as Nucella lapillus , have only been used to make pearls. And some others, Cardium for instance, could have been devoted at the same time to food and pearls. The study of the current biota of the different species allows the biologist to indicate where the shells might have lived: rocky or sandy shores, sheltered or exposed shores, intertidal or subtidal environment. The knowledge of the possible biota is an indication of the areas of the prehistoric...

The Sluice-dock at Ostend OMA
Polk, P..
The sluice-dock at Ostend is an artificial lagoon (1.5 m deep and with an area of 86 ha) connected to the harbour of Ostend and the North Sea by sluices (vannes). At low tides, during spring tide, the whole dock can be emptied, washing out the planktonic biomass. As an oyster culture exists in this biotope, applied and fundamental research is done. Planktonic larvae of oyster predators can be eliminated from the biotope by washing out the whole water volume during their bloom and replacing it by new sea-water. The oyster pest <i>Crepidula fornicata</i> (introduced with oyster spatfall from the Netherlands and reproducing heavily in the sluice-dock, otherwise not occurring along the Belgian coast) is controlled in this way (before: 15,746...

General description of the Scheldt estuary OMA
Baeyens, W.F.J.; Van Eck, B.T.M.; Lambert, C.; Wollast, R.; Goeyens, L..
A general description of the Scheldt estuary, including the hydrology, the sediment transport, the productivity and the biodegradation with respect to their influence on the trace metal behaviour in the Scheldt estuary, is given. The river basin can be divided in several sections according to their morphological, hydrodynamical and sedimentary properties. The zone from km 78 to 55, which corresponds roughly with the salinity zone from 2 to 10 psu, is the zone of high turbidity, high sedimentation and of oxygen depletion, especially in the summer period. That area is called the geochemical filter because the solid/dissolved distribution of the trace metals is controlled by redox, adsorption/desorption, complexation and precipitation/coprecipitation...

Ecometabolism of a shallow marine lagoon at Ostend (Belgium): 2. Zooplankton dynamics OMA
Podamo, J..
The food chain of plankton at the Sluice-Dock is reduced to the simple system "producers-primary consumers". The role of zooplankton is most important only for a short time, namely in May, when it restricts the development of phytoplankton by its grazing activity, and becomes the main source of nutrients due to its excretory activity. After the disappearance of most of the zooplankton biomasses, caused by a mortality that is not due to predation, the phytoplankton can again develop. At other times of the year, the zooplankton activities such as production, grazing, excretion, and respiration only represent 1% of the total plankton activity.

Zeebrugge Port extension sediment transport: measurement on and off the Belgian coast by means of tracers OMA
Bastin, A.; Malherbe, B.; Caillot, A..
An extensive program of tracer experiments was carried out for calculating sediment transport in the vicinity of the Port of Zeebrugge where extension operations are in progress. Offshore radioactive bottom tracers were used for studying the sand transport along the beaches where erosion problems exist. On the beach itself fluorescent tracers were used. For the evaluation of the silting-up rate of the access channels to the harbour a series of radioactive bottom and suspension tracers were tracked <i>in situ</i>. For determining the efficiency of future dumping grounds a combination of bottom tracers and suspension tracers was used. In total, 18 experiments with radioactive tracers were carried out and 9 with fluorescent ones.

The fate of intertidal microphytobenthos carbon: an in situ 13C-labeling study OMA
Middelburg, J.J.; Barranguet, C.; Boschker, H.T.S.; Herman, P.M.J.; Moens, T.; Heip, C.H.R..
At two intertidal sites (one sandy and one silty, in the Scheldt estuary, The Netherlands), the fate of microphytobenthos was studied through an in situ 13C pulse- chase experiment. Label was added at the beginning of low tide, and uptake of 13C by algae was linear during the whole period of tidal exposure (about 27 mg m-2 h-1 in the top millimeter at both sites). The 13C fixed by microphytobenthos was rapidly displaced toward deeper sediment layers (down to 6 cm), in particular at the dynamic, sandy site. The residence times of microphytobenthos with respect to external losses (resuspension and respiration) were about 2.4 and 5.6 d at the...

The western sand extraction area on the Belgian continental shelf OMA
Maertens, D..
This paper describes ecological characteristics of the western sand extraction area off the Belgian coast. A review of scientific research is given with special reference to a long term ecological monitoring programme.Relevant clauses concerning the exploration and exploitation of the Belgian continental shelf were elaborated in the law of 13 June 1969. In application to this law two Royal Decrees were published to regulate exploitation. The ecological monitoring programme investigated benthic communities and demersal fish population since 1977. Close attention was paid to the evolution of dominant species belonging to the epibenthic fauna e.g. the brittle stars (<i>Ophiura texturata</i> and <i>Ophiura albida</i>), the common...

Circadiel patterns in the tidal plankton of a sandy beach in Zeebrugge (Belgium) OMA
Lock, K.; Beyst, B.; Mees, J..
The intertidal fauna of a Belgian sandy beach was sampled on an hourly basis with a hand-pushed sledge to study circadiel patterns in species composition. Four assemblages could be distinguished with classification and ordination techniques. A first division separated the samples taken during daytime from the night samples. Both assemblages were subsequently divided into an ebbtide and a floodtide situation. Light intensity and tidal height were the most important variables explaining the variation in the Canonical Correspondence Analysis.

Mathematical model of the nitrogen cycle in the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Pichot, G.; Runfola, Y..
The nitrogen cycle between dissolved inorganic and organic matter, phytoplankton, zooplankton, non living particulate organic matter, and sediments is studied in the ecosystem formed by the Southern Bight of the North Sea. A consistent pattern of mean annual fluxes of nitrogen based on the primary production and the zooplankton grazing is set up. A mathematical model describing the dynamic behaviour of nutrients, phytoplankton, zooplankton and dissolved organic matter is proposed. The results of the simulation fairly well fit the recent observations made in the frame of the Math. Model Sea Research Programme.

Ecometabolism of a shallow marine lagoon at Ostend (Belgium): 4. The role of microbial activity in sediments in the carbon and nitrogen cycles OMA
Podamo, J..
Nitrogen nutrients being, at least at some periods of the year, a limiting factor of primary production in the Sluice-Dock at Ostend, the production or consumption of ammonium and nitrate by the benthic bacterial communities plays an important role in the dynamics of the ecosystem. A methodology is developed to evaluate the fluxes of carbon and nitrogen associated with the microbiological activity and the physical mass transfer in the sediments. It is based on the analysis of vertical concentration profiles of pertinent substances in the sediment, completed with some direct <i>in situ</i> measurements of microbiological activity. This methodology is applied to denitrification, total heterotrophic activity, and nutrification in the two types...

Ecometabolism of a shallow marine lagoon at Ostend (Belgium): 3. The role of planktonic heterotrophic bacteria OMA
Podamo, J..
In order to assess the importance of the recycling of organic matter into nutrients in the water column, the bacterial biomass was evaluated by the spread-plate counts method, and the heterotrophic activity by two methods: initial consumption rate of oxygen and anaplerotic bicarbonate fixation. The biomass of aerobic heterotrophic bacteria does not reflect the heterotrophic activity and cannot be used as an index for this activity. This activity is always important as a recycling process for the phytoplanktonic organic matter it is depending on. Different periods can be recognized, with varying importance (relative to other recycling factors) of bacterial activity.
