Influence on the ileal and fecal digestibility of forages inclusion in the diet Organic Eprints
Jørgensen, Henry; Lærke, H.N.; Carlson, D..
The present investigation aimed to study the ileal and fecal digestibility of three forages (Clover grass, Clover grass silage and Pea-Barley silage) supplemented to a basal diet. A total of 24 pigs, adapted to eating forages by supplementing a basal feed with clover grass silage from weaning, were fitted with a T-cannula at the terminal ileum at approximate 30 kg LW. For each of the three types of forage, two balance trials with 4 weeks interval were carried out. Two pigs in each test were fed the basal diet while 6 others were fed the basal diet plus forage throughout the whole experiment. The intake of forages was relative low and quite variable and accounted on average for only 10-12 % of the daily dry matter intake. Ileal digestibility estimated by...

Economic Evaluation of Longevity in Organic Dairy Farming Organic Eprints
Horn, Marco; Knaus, Wilhelm; Kirner, Leopold; Steinwidder, Andreas.
The aim of this study was to highlight the economic importance of longevity in organic dairy cattle husbandry. Performance and reproductive data of 44,976 Austrian organic Simmental dairy cows were analysed by applying a bio-economic model. A farm scenario as well as different market situations were modelled. Overall costs declined with increasing longevity, due to dropping replacement costs. Annual profit was influenced considerably by milk yield and longevity. Short-lived animals needed substantially higher annual milk yields than long-lived animals to achieve equal annual profits. The applied market scenarios showed an increasing importance of longevity in situations of increasing economic pressure (+20% of concentrate price). It has been proven that...

Ekologiskt foder – krävs det andra värphönsgenotyper? Ekologiskt lantbruk konferens 22-23 november 2005. Ultuna, Uppsala. Sammanfattningar av föredrag och postrar. SLU. Centrum för uthålligt lantbruk. Organic Eprints
Elwinger, Klas.

Cows fed vitamin-rich feed produce vitamin-rich milk Organic Eprints
Mogensen, Lisbeth; Kristensen, Troels; Jensen, Søren K.; Søegaard, Karen.
On five organic dairy farms there was a positive effect of a high vitamin content in the home-grown roughage on the vitamin content of the milk produced. Vitamins and minerals are of crucial importance for the health and performance of the animals, and they also affect the nutritional value of the products. The highest concentrations of pro-vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene) and vitamin E (alfa-tocopherol) are found in grass, legumes and other green plants, while seeds and whole-crop silage only contain small amounts of vitamins. While the requirements for for fat-soluble vitamins of grazing cattle are normally met via their intake from pasture, the supply of fat-soluble vitamins may decrease to very low amounts when conserved herbage is used...
