The importance of essential fatty acids for the early larval stages of cultured marine fish and crustacean larvae is well documented. In this regard, the variability in essential fatty acid content of their live prey Artemia is critical. This paper describes different techniques for improving the fatty acid profile in Artemia nauplii using microparticles and emulsions as enrichment diets. These diets can be applied during the incubation of the cysts and/or after the separation of the nauplii. After enrichment, the nauplii not only contain high levels of the essential fatty acid 20:5 omega 3 (up to 13.5% or 35.2 mg/g) but also considerable levels of 22:6 omega 3 (up to 7% or 18.1 mg/g), another essential fatty acid which... |

An international intercalibration exercise was conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the ICES Standard Methodology for fatty acid analysis in a sample of Artemia and a formulated dry feed. Results were received from 11 of the 20 laboratories to which samples were sent. Five participants followed the Standard Method, five their own in-house method and one laboratory compared their own in-house method with the Standard Method. Total lipid content was reported by eight participants.
The average intra-laboratory variation in the determination of total lipid content was only 3.6% (CV) for the dry feed and 4.0% for the Artemia nauplii. The inter-laboratory variation was somewhat higher being 5.2% for the dry feed and... |

A flow-through culture system is described for the controlled production of Artemia cysts in 10 liter aquaria using 50 promille artificial seawater enriched with Fe-EDTA as culture medium, micronised rice bran as food source and cyclic flushes of the cultures with N2-gas as induction mechanism for oviparity. The culture water is recirculated over a rotating biological contactor, a settling tank and a UV disinfection unit. Cysts are continuously harvested by filtration of the culture effluent. Production yields average 0.5 g dry cysts per day and per aquarium. |

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios have been determined on 41 strains of Artemia sp. from different geographic regions around the world. The delta 13C and delta 15N values ranged between -13.7 to -25.0 per mil and -0.7 to 21.2 per mil respectively. Artemia delta 13C values from coastal environments are consistent with a marine origin for the food source. Artemia from inland salt lakes have a range of carbon isotope values suggesting C3, C4 and CAM based organic matter could form the base of the Artemia food chain. These data indicate that... |

Considering the necessity for standardization of toxicity tests and the need for simple and reliable routine tests, the Artemia Reference Center at the State University of Ghent in Belgium has developed a short term standard toxicity test with Artemia nauplii. This simple and inexpensive bioassay which can be used as a screening test to determine the toxicity of chemicals to aquatic organisms, has been discussed in detail during a special workshop devoted to toxicity tests with brine shrimp, at the occasion of the "International Symposium on the brine shrimp Artemia salina"(Corpus Christi, Texas, USA; August 1979). Besides a few minor modifications, the test methodology was... |

A flow-through system is described for the controlled production of Artemia nauplii. High densities of adult brine shrimp are induced to ovoviviparity through diet manipulation, optimal culture water exchange, and high constant oxygen levels. The nauplii produced are separated from the culture tank effluents in a special recuperation filter system. The culture water is recirculated over a rotating biodisc, a cross-flow sieve, and a plate separator. The potential of this nauplii production system for application in aquaculture hatcheries is discussed. |

Standardization of toxicity tests on aquatic organisms to detect the impact of chemicals on freshwater or marine ecosystems is an urgent necessity. From the variety of methods, criteria, and test species proposed, simple standardized tests for algae, crustaceans, and fish are now close to being adopted at the international level for the freshwater environment. Despite the same urgency, very little has been achieved for the marine environment. Artemia is an extremely suitable test-species since, contrary to all other organisms, it does not require continuous maintenance of stock cultures. Unfortunately none of the Artemia toxicity tests that have been worked out so far can be adopted as such as a representative standard... |

Six Artemia populations from coastal and inland sites in Chile, ranging from 20 to 50 degrees latitude south, were compared morphologically. The study included reference samples of A. franciscana (San Fransisco Bay, California-USA) and A. persimilis (Buenos Aires, Argentina). These species are likely to be found in Chile. Samples from Peru (Piura) and Brazil (Macau, Rio Grande do Norte) are two known examples of deliberate introduction of A. franciscana. The hypothesis of A. franciscana being the dominant species in South America was tested by multivariate morphological analyses based on ten body measurements. In addition, laboratory cross-fertility tests were... |

1. A simple cylindrical hatching and separator box is described for Artemia salinanauplii (and other phototactic invertebrates), in which the "corner seeking effect" responsible for poor separation is avoided, and from which nauplii can be recovered very conveniently. 2. Separation is achieved by partly unscrewing an internal and closed cylinder from its fixed counter-part glued to the bottom of the box, till two slits are freed through which the nauplii migrate from the darkened internal hatching cylinder into the illuminated exterior compartment. Rescrewing the former cylinder separates the larvae from debris and unhatched eggs. |

A fluidized bed dryer for processing Artemia cysts at the temperatures above 40°C is described and evaluated. The design is directed towards electronic temperature regulation and optimal design of the drying unit. The described fluidized bed dryer proves to be reliable for cyst processing, using inflow air temperatures up to 90°C. The use of this elevated temperature ensures a higher drying rate, resulting in a drying capacity more than 4 times higher than when using inflow air of 40°C. Electronic temperature regulation resulted in a large flexibility of the temperature regime inside the drying unit. |

Artemia cysts have been collected from different saltworks and natural salt lakes in Tunisia. The cyst material was processed and used for the following characterization analyses: cyst and naupliar biometrics, cyst hatching characteristics, fatty acid pattern of the nauplii, nutritional value of the nauplii for mysid shrimp, naupliar growth rate and temperature resistance, mode of reproduction, and characterization of sibling species. The cross-breeding tests and cyst biometrics reveal that only Artemia tunisiana occurs in Tunisia. Although quality improvements may be expected through improved harvesting, Tunisian Artemia have acceptable hatching characteristics and are a good food for mysid shrimp.... |

The brine shrimp Artemia , an excellent live food source in aquaculture, has been studied as a carrier to deliver selected chemotherapeutic agents to fish for prophylactic treatment of infectious diseases. To monitor the efficiency of incorporation of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole in Artemia franciscana, a sensitive and specific analytical method was developed. It is based on homogenization of Artemia nauplii in methanol, extraction of lipids with hexane, solid-phase cleanup on C18 cartridges, and reversed-phase liquid chromatography with detection at 210 nm. The method is sensitive (detection limit, on the order of 3 µg/g with a sample quantity of 30 mg... |

The carotenoid composition of Artemia cysts from 17 geographical strains was studied. All-trans-canthaxanthins and cis-canthaxanthins were quantitatively determined using a non-aqueous reversed phase chromatographic method. In dehydrated cysts, the average cis- and trans-canthaxanthin levels (+/- SD) were 152 +/- 52 and 134 +/- 42 µg/g, respectively (range 38-227 and 67-201µg/g). The corresponding concentrations in hydrated cysts were (cis) 177 +/- 60 µg/g (range 47-271 µg/g) and (trans) 112 +/- 35 µg/g (range 52-169 µg/g). The cis/trans concentration ratios averaged 1.13 (range 0.57-1.47) and 1.60 (range... |
