The slipper limpet Crepidula fornicata is an emblematic invasive species along the northeast Atlantic coast. This gregarious gastropod lives in stacks of several individuals and forms extended beds in shallow subtidal areas. The effects of this engineer species on the colonized habitat can be physical (e.g., presence of hard-shell substrates with uneven topography) or biological (e.g., nutrient enrichment by direct excretion or via biodeposition). We hypothesized that through biological activity, nutrient fluxes at the sediment-water interface are enhanced, leading to stimulated primary productivity by microphytobenthos (MPB) associated with Crepidula beds. To test this fertilization hypothesis, we conducted a 10-day mesocosm experiment using C. fornicata... |

Theory states that tree growth in lowland tropical forests on old, weathered soils is limited by low phosphorous (P) availability. However, evidence for P limitation from nutrient manipulation experiments remains unclear, which raises the question whether trees are taking up added P. In French Guianese lowland rainforest, we measured changes in nitrogen (N) and P availability before and up to two months after N and P addition. We measured in soils with intact root systems and soils excluding roots and mycorrhizal fungi with root exclusion cylinders. When the root system was excluded, P addition increased P availability to a much greater extent and for a longer time than where the roots remained undisturbed. N dynamics were unaffected by root... |

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) constitute a large family of organic pollutants emitted in the environment as complex mixtures, the compositions of which depend on origin. Among a wide range of physiological defects, PAHs are suspected to be involved in disruption of reproduction. In an aquatic environment, the trophic route is an important source of chronic exposure to PAHs. Here, we performed trophic exposure of zebrafish to three fractions of different origin, one pyrolytic and two petrogenic. Produced diets contained PAHs at environmental concentrations. Reproductive traits were analyzed at individual, tissue and molecular levels. Reproductive success and cumulative eggs number were disrupted after exposure to all three fractions, albeit to... |

Since the first work of Blaxter in 1953, fish sperm cryopreservation has been attempted on about 30 marine species. The present paper reviews the techniques used and the results published in these species. Particular attention is paid to the handling procedure of sperm before freezing, the problems of semen ageing and semen contamination with urine. The quality of frozen-thawed semen was evaluated using previously standardized biotests, such as a two-step motility activation technique adapted for the different species and fertilization assays using a discriminating insemination technique. Most extenders used in marine fish are saline or sugar solutions. From the investigated cryoprotectants, dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) generally leads to the best results.... |

The explosion of the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil platform resulted in large amounts of crude oil and dispersant Corexit 9500A® released into the Gulf of Mexico and coincided with the spawning season of the oyster, Crassostrea virginica. The effects of exposing gametes and embryos of C. virginica to dispersant alone (Corexit), mechanically (HEWAF) and chemically dispersed (CEWAF) DWH oil were evaluated. Fertilization success and the morphological development, growth, and survival of larvae were assessed. Gamete exposure reduced fertilization (HEWAF: EC201 h = 1650 μg tPAH50 L− 1; CEWAF: EC201 h = 19.4 μg tPAH50 L− 1; Corexit: EC201 h = 6.9 mg L− 1). CEWAF and Corexit showed a similar toxicity on early life stages at equivalent nominal concentrations.... |

The effects of cytochalasin B on fertilization and ploidy in Crassostrea gigas were examined in a controlled experiment. This enabled us to better understand why variable ploidy results have been found with the retention of polar bodies in previous studies on bivalve mollusks, and what the interaction with fertilization may be. By looking at the early development of Crassostrea gigas embryos with sequential samples stained using Hoechst 33258, a fluorescent DNA-specific dye, we compared normal evolution of fertilized eggs with that obtained with cytochalasin B treatment. In treated eggs, embryos with both three and four pronuclei were found after the second meiotic division. When embryos had three pronuclei, these were identified as the female pronucleus... |
