Composition and diversity of anurans in the Restinga of the Conde municipality, northern coast of the state of Bahia, northeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Gondim-Silva,Felipe Augusto Trindade; Andrade,Alessandra Rodrigues Santos; Abreu,Rafael Oliveira; Nascimento,Jamile Santos; Corrêa,Geovane Paixão; Menezes,Lucas; Trevisan,Camila Costa; Camargo,Soraia Silva; Napoli,Marcelo Felgueiras.
Abstract The Conde municipality is located in the northern coast of the state of Bahia (NC), northeastern Brazil, and is part of the Atlantic Tropical domain. The anuran fauna of the northern portion of the NC is still poorly known if compared to the southern portion. The Restinga is one of the predominant environments of the coastal plains of the NC and it is characterized essentially by presenting sandy soil covered by herbaceous and shrubby vegetation. The objective of this study was to determine the anuran species composition and diversity for the Restinga of the Conde municipality. Sampling was carried out at night by active search over four periods of five consecutive days each, two over the 'main rainy season' and two in a 'lesser rainy season',...

Drosophilids (Insecta, Diptera) of the Paranã Valley: eight new records for the Cerrado biome Biota Neotropica
Mata,Renata Alves da; Roque,Francisco; Tidon,Rosana.
The Paranã Valley, located in the Central Brazil Plateau, within the domain of the Cerrado biome, is frequently cited as a center of endemism and diversity. Nonetheless, this region is poorly known, mainly considering its invertebrate fauna. Here, drosophilid flies were used as biological tools to contribute to a broader inventory, whose goals were mapping the Cerrado biodiversity and identifying areas to be conserved. Three previously unsampled areas in the Paranã Valley were sampled. Amongst the 12,297 specimens collected 45 species were identified, which represents 50% of the drosophilid species previously recorded in the Cerrado. Moreover, this sampling presented eight new occurrences for the biome (Drosophila annulosa, D. calloptera, D. papei, D....

Dragonflies and damselflies from the West of Minas Gerais, Brazil: checklist and new records Biota Neotropica
Vilela,Diogo Silva; Koroiva,Ricardo; Tosta,Thiago Henrique Azevedo; Novaes,Marcos Carneiro; Guillermo-Ferreira,Rhainer.
Abstract: The knowledge about the richness and distribution of Brazilian dragonflies is still being unveiled. Over the years, inventories, reviews, and descriptions have been made. These contributions, apart from the taxonomic value, also provide valuable data on the occurrence of species and their distributions, which are rarely accompanied by notes about natural history and behavior. Keeping this legacy in mind, we collected dragonflies between 2011 and 2019 in Minas Gerais state, which resulted in the registration of 90 species, 41 genera and 11 families. Our results also increase distribution data, an important tool for conservation actions, and provide additional information about habitat and biology of species.

Abstract: The Amazonas River basin comprises the world’s highest fish species diversity. Anthropogenic interferences in aquatic environments represent a pressure over the maintenance of ecological stability and biodiversity. We inventoried the ichthyofauna of 13 disturbed/modified tributaries of Urubu and Amazonas rivers in the region of the middle Amazon River, between June 2018 and March 2019. A total of 164 species were captured, represented by 11 orders, 37 families and 96 genera. Characiformes was the richest order, followed by Cichliformes and Siluriformes. The most representative families in number of species were Cichlidae, Serrasalmidae, and Characidae. Hemigrammus levis was the most abundant species, and Acarichthys heckelii the most common,...

A brief inventory of sand flies (Diptera, Psychodidae) from the National Forest of the Rio Preto, state of the Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Pinto,Israel de Souza; Tonini,João Filipe Riva; Ferreira,Adelson Luiz; Falqueto,Aloísio.
The inventories on sand flies are usually conducted for a long period in leishmaniasis-endemic regions. Thus, there is little data on the sand fly fauna in areas where no leishmaniasis cases have been reported. Therefore, we conducted an inventory to study the sand fly fauna in the National Forest of Rio Preto (NFRP). We carried out a brief inventory by using four CDC light traps in 2009 during winter and summer. We collected 1,403 sand flies belonging to 11 genera and 22 species. As expected, we did not find in the NFRP region sand flies species that have been reported as vectors of Leishmania. However, we found some species of sand flies with few records and that rarely have been reported in southeastern Brazil. Nevertheless, the diversity and species...

How many species of drosophila (Diptera, Drosophilidae) remain to be described in the forests of São Paulo, Brazil?: species lists of three forest remnants Biota Neotropica
Medeiros,Hermes Fonsêca de; Klaczko,Louis Bernard.
This paper describes the composition and abundance of Drosophila species found in three forest remnants in the State of São Paulo. A well-standardized sampling procedure applied on four collecting trips to the same sites on four areas resulted on 944 samples. All males collected were identified by analyses of the genitalia, this being the only data set used. One hundred and twenty five species were detected amongst the 29,289 males analyzed. From them 57,6% could be identified as described species. Thirteen of the species found were absent from the previous species list for the state of São Paulo State, thus represent an increase of 13% on the number known. We argue that the majority of the 53 unidentified species are in fact undescribed. The sites studied...

The phytoplankton biodiversity of the coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Villac,Maria Célia; Cabral-Noronha,Valéria Aparecida de Paula; Pinto,Thatiana de Oliveira.
The objective of this study is to compile the inventory of nearly 100 years of research about the phytoplankton species cited for the coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. A state-of-the-art study on the local biodiversity has long been needed to provide a baseline for future comparisons. This type of data is scattered in old scientific journals and in the so-called "grey literature", and are in need of nomenclature updating. Twenty-six publications are considered. The earliest sampling record is from 1913 (?) and the most recent from 2002. This checklist compiled from the literature was complemented with primary data collected between August 2004 and July 2006, recent surveys of the surf-zone of 20 beaches located along the coast and of a mariculture...

Snakes from coastal islands of State of São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Cicchi,Paulo José Pyles; Sena,Marco Aurélio de; Peccinini-Seale,Denise Maria; Duarte,Marcelo Ribeiro.
There are relatively few studies on snake fauna from coastal islands of the State of São Paulo (SSP), Southeastern Brazil and the number of species housed in Brazilian institutional zoological collections is relatively limited. In Brazil, for the first time, a snake inventory for eighteen islands of coastal SSP is presented. Here we record data from sampling on eleven islands as well information on vouchered species in the main herpetological collections. Thirty-six species from four families: one Boidae, thirty Colubridae, one Elapidae and four Viperidae from eighteen islands are listed as well as the thirteen new island records for snakes. Relative abundance categories were used for species rarity: common, infrequent and rare; 44.4% of the snakes with...

Ichthyofauna of Seridó/Borborema: a semi-arid region of Brazil Biota Neotropica
Silva,Márcio Joaquim da; Ramos,Telton Pedro Anselmo; Diniz,Virginia Dantas; Ramos,Robson Tamar da Costa; Medeiros,Elvio Sergio Figueredo.
The Seridó/Borborema region is located between the States Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte and a priority area for conservation of the Caatinga. This region is under the hydrological influence of the middle portion of Piranhas-Açu River basin. Previous systematic inventories of the ichthyofauna of this Caatinga’s area are not significant. The Caatinga fish fauna is threatened due the advancement of historic anthropogenic activities, mainly agricultural. Furthermore, another relevant aspect is the recent governmental decision of transferring water from São Francisco River to other Northern river basins, which includes the Piranhas-Açu basin. This study performed a systematic survey of the Seridó/Borborema’s ichthyofauna. The sites were sampled during the...
