Reserve substances and storage of Cyathea delgadii Sternb. spores Rev. Bras. Bot.
SIMABUKURO,ELIANA A.; CARVALHO,MARIA ANGELA M. DE; FELIPPE,G. M..
The spores used were collected from a population of trees of Cyathea delgadii Sternb. growing in a gallery forest at the Reserva Biológica e Estação Experimental de Moji Guaçu, São Paulo state, Brazil (22°18’S and 47°11’W). The germination of spores of Cyathea delgadii decreases with time when kept in closed bottles under storage at 4°C in darkness. Germination is still very high after storage for one year. Spores stored for three years do not germinate. The results also show a decrease in soluble proteins and an increase in starch after several months storage.

Oil and fat in broiler nutrition Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Baião,NC; Lara,LJC.
The terms "fat" and "oil" refer to triglycerides of several profiles of fatty acids. Fatty acids that are not bound to other organic components as glycerol are the so-called free fatty acids. Lipids constitute the main energetic source for animals and they have the highest caloric value among all the nutrients. Linoleic acid is the only fatty acid whose dietetic requirement has been demonstrated. Besides supplying energy, the addition of fat to animal diets improves the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, decreases pulverulence, increases diet palatability, and the efficiency of utilization of the consumed energy. Furthermore, it reduces the rate of food passage through the gastrointestinal tract, which allows a better absorption of all nutrients present...

Females of Tapinotaspoides, a genus in the oil-collecting bee tribe Tapinotaspidini, collect secretions from non-floral trichomes (Hymenoptera, Apidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Melo,Gabriel A. R.; Gaglianone,Maria Cristina.
Harvesting of secretions from non-floral trichomes by females of Tapinotaspoides serraticornis is reported for the first time. The females exhibit a type of mopping behavior using the fringes of long, wavy setae along the posterior margins of their metasomal sterna. Our observations indicated a wide range of host plants used as sources for these secretions, including Waltheria (Sterculiaceae), Tibouchina (Melastomataceae), Sida (Malvaceae), Jacquemontia (Convolvulaceae), and unidentified species of Commelinaceae and Cyperaceae.

Energy substrate used by workers of leaf-cutting ants during nest excavation Rev. Bras. entomol.
Camargo,Roberto S.; Lopes,Juliane F. S.; Forti,Luiz C.; Somera,Alexandre F.; Bacci Jr,Mauricio.
Energy substrate used by workers of leaf-cutting ants during nest excavation. In this study we aimed to ascertain whether leaf-cutting ant workers lose body reserves (fat or sugars) as a function of nest excavation. For each treatment, we isolated 10 workers of Atta sexdens into two experimental groups, Control (C- without excavation) and Soil (S- with excavation), which were kept for different time intervals (0, 24, 48 or 72 hours), totaling 700 tested workers. We then determined the concentration of soluble carbohydrates and total lipid content in them. The total carbohydrates were determined colorimetrically, based on the reaction between carbohydrates and sulfuric acid-phenol. For determination of lipids, the insects were immersed in organic solvent...

Pectin degradation in ripening and wounded fruits Rev. Bras. Fisiol. Veg.
HUBER,DONALD J.; KARAKURT,YASAR; JEONG,JIWON.
Pectin depolymerization during fruit ripening has been shown to be largely due to pectinolytic enzymes, including polygalacturonases (E.C. 3.2.1.15) and pectinmethylesterases (E.C. 3.2.1.11). Studies have shown that these enzymes are not the primary determinants of softening, although participation in texture changes during the late stages of ripening seems evident. Pectin depolymerization differs significantly between various fruit types, notably avocado and tomato, even though levels of extractable PG activity in these fruits are similar. Collective evidence indicates that the activities of some cell wall enzymes are restricted in vivo, with maximum hydrolytic potential expressed only in response to tissue disruption or wounding. In contrast, other...

Seed reserve composition and mobilization during germination and initial seedling development of Euphorbia heterophylla Rev. Bras. Fisiol. Veg.
SUDA,CECILIA N.K.; GIORGINI,JARBAS F..
Seed composition and reserve mobilization were investigated in wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla L.). Lipids, around 60% of seed dry mass, are the major reserve. Proteins, including albumins (49%), salt insoluble globulins (30%), salt-soluble globulins (21%) and prolamins (0.3%), comprise about a quarter of seed dry mass. Soluble sugars comprise about 3.6% of seed dry mass, sucrose being the predominant sugar. Starch was not detected in the endosperm of E. heterophylla. Lipid depletion starts after initial imbibition, and is completed between 72 and 96 hours. Protein fractions exhibit different degradation patterns, salt-soluble globulins being continuously degraded after the start of imbibition whereas salt insoluble fractions are degraded between...

Changes in hormonal balance as key to reserve degradation after dormancy overcoming in Annona macroprophyllata and Annona purpurea seeds Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Ferreira,Gisela; De-la-Cruz-Chacón,Ivan; González-Esquinca,Alma Rosa.
Abstract Studies on the effect of the applying of phytoregulators to overcome seed dormancy have been carried out in Annonaceae species, thus the endogenous relationship between abscisic acid and gibberellins after the application of phytoregulators needs to be known in these species. Considering the importance of hormonal balance in dormancy mechanisms, the aim of this research was to elucidate how endogenous ABA and GA concentrations change after the application of phytoregulators in seeds and how these changes affect reserve degradation during germination of Annona macroprophyllata and A. purpurea seeds. Seeds were submitted to three conditions: - no soaking, soaking-in-water and soaking-in-GA4+7+benzyladenine. ABA, GA, lipids, proteins, and total...

Alterations in the lipid and soluble sugar content of melanoxylon brauna seeds during natural and accelerated ageing Rev. bras. sementes
Corte,Viviana Borges; Borges,Eduardo Euclydes de Lima e; Gonçalves,José Francisco de Carvalho; Silva,Mirian Sousa.
The decay of seeds is irreversible and at best can only be delayed by applying techniques that reduce the velocity of the metabolic reactions involved. There is little information on the biochemistry of tropical forest tree seeds related to their storability. It was investigated the influence of the composition of lipids and soluble sugars of two storage compartments, the cotyledons and the embryonic axis, of Melanoxylon brauna Schot. (Leguminosae- Caesalpinioideae), a hardwood known as black brauna, seeds stored at 20 ºC for 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months (natural ageing) and for 0, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours at 40 ºC (accelerated ageing). The levels of fatty acids and monosaccharides varied differentially in each of the embryo storage compartments. Changes in...

Scientific progress in ruminant production in the 1st decade of the XXI century R. Bras. Zootec.
Santos,Geraldo Tadeu dos; Silva-Kazama,Daniele Cristina da; Kazama,Ricardo; Petit,Helene V..
Scientific advances in nutrition of dairy cows in the first decade of the XXI century have occurred. This paper will review the most common additives fed to transition cows to decrease the incidence of metabolic disorders, which will be discussed separately with emphasis on their mechanisms of action, utilization and efficiency. Some changes on protein in the 2001 updated version of the Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle to reach better precision of the nitrogen and amino acid requirements of lactating cows also are presented. Many of the advances in nutritional manipulation of milk fat concentration are related to fat supplementation, then the relationship between the action of rumen microbes on biohydrogenation of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids...

Temporal dynamics of milk composition of the precocial caviomorph Octodon degus (Rodentia: Octodontidae) RChHN
VELOSO,CLAUDIO; KENAGY,G.J..
During lactation, both the nutritional and energetic requirements of suckling change gradually. These changes normally are accompanied by modifications in chemical composition of the milk. We investigated the temporal course of milk composition during lactation in a precocial caviomorph rodent, the "degu" (Octodon degus) under laboratory condition. Female degus were kept in laboratory during gestation and lactation and fed with commercial food pellets. Milk was collected at three stages of lactation: early (days 5-8, n = 12), middle (days 15-21, n = 7) and late (days 26-40, n = 6), and analyzed for protein, carbohydrates, lipids, ash, total solids and energy. On average, carbohydrates decreased from 3.1 ± 0.3 % (early) to 1.1 ± 0.3 % (late) during...
