Olssonella scalatella (Guppy, 1873), originally described from early Pliocene deposits in Jamaica, still occurs as a recent species off the northern coast of S. America. This opinion is based on shells collected off Surinam and French Guyana, fossil specimens from the type-locality, and data from the literature. O. smithii (Dall, 1888) is considered a closely related recent species, occurring more to the north; it differs from O. scalatella mainly in characters of the protoconch. Conchological characters of the two taxa are discussed and some general notes are given concerning the importance of protoconch characters. |

A borehole was drilled at Rotterdam in 1955 as a demonstration during the E55 exhibition. Holoplanktonic molluscs (pteropods) were found to be present in the interval 504.5-655.0 m below rotary table (= RT). The upper sample of Middle Eocene (Lutetian) age yielded just a few unidentifiable limacinids. The section between 507.5-607.0 m, of Early Eocene (Ypresian) age, yielded poorly preserved pteropods and demonstrated that the complete interval belongs to pteropod zone 9. Apart from the most abundant species, Camptoceratops priscus, which is the index taxon of pteropod zone 9, the section yielded Heliconoides mercinensis and Limacina taylori, which are known to accompany the index species. Two further limacinid species are described as new to science, viz.... |

The goal of this study is to assess if the reproductive strategy of a brooding land snail shifts along a climatic gradient. We focused on the following traits: timing and length of the reproductive season, brood size, ontogenetic dynamics of embryos, and reproductive mode (viviparity versus egg-laying). We dissected the central European door snail Alinda biplicata, collected monthly from eight populations covering the oceaniccontinental climatic gradient within the species’ distribution range. Forty percent of the 1706 dissected individuals were brooding. The species displayed a spring-summer reproductive activity pattern: intrauterine brooding was recorded between March and September; first embryos of a developmental stage that equals that of live-born... |

Fifteen samples taken from interbedded sandstone, siltstone and claystone of Pliocene age, underlying the Bolinao Limestone, at the localities Anda, Roxas and Tiep (Pangasinan, Luzon, Philippines), were analysed for holoplanktonic gastropods; they have yielded 50 species (16 Heteropoda, one Janthinidae, and 33 Pteropoda, the latter consisting of 30 Euthecosomata, two Pseudothecosomata and one Gymnosomata). Faunal diversity between the localities sampled is restricted and explained by differences in sample size and/or preservation. The time interval represented by all samples taken together is postulated to have been brief. Fifteen new taxa (= 30% of the total number of encountered holoplanktonic molluscan species) are erected; Atlanta lingayanensis sp.... |

Since 1758, with the publication of Systema Naturae by Linnaeus, thousands of scientific names have been proposed for molluscs. The derivation and uses of many of them are here examined from various viewpoints, beginning with names based on appearance, size, vertical distribution, and location. There follow names that are amusing, inventive, ingenious, cryptic, ideal, names supposedly blasphemous, and names honouring persons and pets. Pseudo-names, difficult names and names that are long or short, over-used, or have sexual connotations are also examined. Pertinent quotations, taken from the non-scientific writings of Gertrude Stein, Lord Byron and William Shakespeare, have been incorporated for the benefit of those who may be inclined to take scientific... |
